When can you file for unemployment in Washington - timing questions
I'm getting laid off next Friday and wondering about the timing for filing my unemployment claim with Washington ESD. Should I wait until after my last day of work or can I file beforehand? Also heard something about waiting periods - is that still a thing? Really stressed about getting this right since I have rent due in two weeks.

You can file your claim the Sunday after your last day of work. Washington ESD recommends filing as soon as you're eligible because there's usually a one-week waiting period before benefits start. Don't file before your last day though - that could cause issues with your claim.

•Thanks! So if Friday is my last day, I should file that Sunday? And the waiting period means I won't get paid for the first week?

•Exactly right. File that Sunday, and yes the first week is unpaid - it's called the waiting week. But you'll get paid for the second week if everything processes correctly.

Make sure you have all your info ready when you file - social security number, employer details for the last 18 months, and your separation reason. The online system at esd.wa.gov walks you through it but having everything organized helps.

•Good point about the 18 months thing. I had three different jobs in that time period so I'll need to gather all that info.

•Also keep your pay stubs if you have them! Sometimes Washington ESD needs wage verification if there's any discrepancy in their records.

Filing is just the beginning though. I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for weeks about my claim status and it's impossible. Their phone lines are always busy and the callback system doesn't work half the time.

•Have you tried using Claimyr? I discovered it when I was having the same problem reaching Washington ESD agents. It's at claimyr.com and they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows exactly how it works. Basically helps you get through their phone system.

•Never heard of that but I'm desperate at this point. Does it actually work or is it just another scam?

•It's legit - I used it last month when my claim got stuck in adjudication. Much better than sitting on hold for hours or getting disconnected.

One thing people don't realize is you need to be 'able and available' to work when you file. If you're planning a vacation right after getting laid off, that could affect your benefits. Washington ESD is pretty strict about this requirement.

•What exactly does 'able and available' mean? I'm not planning any trips but want to make sure I understand this.

•It means you're physically able to work, available for work during normal business hours, and actively seeking employment. You also can't turn down suitable work offers.

•And you have to do job search activities every week and log them in WorkSourceWA. That's required now for most people on regular unemployment.

The timing thing is so confusing! I got laid off on a Wednesday but didn't file until the next Monday. Then Washington ESD said I should have filed the Sunday after my last day and it caused delays with my weekly claims.

•Yeah they're really specific about that Sunday rule. It's because their benefit weeks run Sunday through Saturday, so filing on the right Sunday aligns everything properly.

•Wish I had known that earlier. Took an extra two weeks to get my first payment because of the confusion.

Also remember you can't file if you quit your job unless it's for 'good cause' as defined by Washington ESD. Being laid off, fired for non-misconduct reasons, or having your hours reduced significantly all qualify though.

•Good to know. In my case it's definitely a layoff - whole department is being eliminated due to budget cuts.

•That's a clear qualifying reason. Just make sure your employer reports it correctly to Washington ESD when they file their part of the paperwork.

I tried calling Washington ESD yesterday to ask about filing timing and gave up after 2 hours on hold. This system is broken.

•Same experience here. That's actually how I found out about Claimyr - saw someone mention it in another forum. Really helps with getting through to actual agents instead of sitting on hold forever.

•Is that the service that helps you get through their phone system? Might have to try it if I run into issues with my claim.

Quick tip - file online rather than calling. The website usually works better than trying to get someone on the phone for basic filing. You only really need to call if there are problems with your claim later.

•That's my plan. Hopefully the online system is straightforward enough that I won't need to call at all.

•The online filing is pretty user-friendly. Just take your time and double-check everything before submitting.

Don't forget about the job search requirements either. You'll need to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and log them in WorkSourceWA. Start doing this right away even while waiting for your claim to process.

•3 per week sounds manageable. Do they have to be actual applications or can some be networking contacts?

•Mix of both works. Applications, contacting employers directly, networking events, job fairs - they all count as long as they're legitimate job search activities.

File as soon as you can after your last day. I waited a week thinking I needed to 'settle in' to being unemployed and that week delay meant I lost a week of benefits I could have claimed.

•Wait, you can lose benefits by filing late? I thought you could always backdate claims.

Zara Khan
•You can backdate but there are limits and it's not guaranteed. Better to file on time and avoid the hassle.

The whole process is so stressful when you're already dealing with job loss. At least Washington ESD's website has improved over the past couple years - used to be much worse.

Oliver Weber
•That's somewhat reassuring. I'm already anxious about navigating all this while job hunting.

•Take it one step at a time. File your initial claim first, then worry about the weekly claims and job search requirements. Don't try to figure everything out at once.

Just to confirm what others said - file the Sunday after your last day of work, have all your employment history ready, and be prepared for that waiting week. The system works but you have to follow their rules exactly.

•Perfect summary, thanks everyone! Feeling much more confident about the process now.
