When to file for unemployment benefits in Washington - timing questions
I'm getting laid off next Friday and I'm trying to figure out exactly when I should file my unemployment claim with Washington ESD. My last day of work is December 20th but I'm getting paid through the end of the year. Should I file right away on the 21st or wait until after my last paycheck? I don't want to mess this up and cause delays. Also heard something about waiting weeks - is that still a thing? Really stressed about getting this timing right since I have bills coming up in January.

File your claim the Sunday after your last day of work, not when your pay ends. So if your last work day is December 20th (Friday), file on Sunday December 22nd. The waiting week was eliminated in Washington a few years ago, so you can get paid for your first week if you're eligible.

•Thank you! So I file based on when I stop working, not when the paychecks stop? That makes sense.

•Exactly right. I learned this the hard way when I waited too long and lost out on benefits for that first week.

Just went through this myself last month. File as soon as you're unemployed, don't wait. The sooner you file, the sooner they can process your claim. Mine took about 2 weeks to get approved but I know some people are waiting longer.

•2 weeks isn't too bad. Did you have any issues with the application process?

•Pretty straightforward online, just make sure you have all your employment info ready - dates, wages, reason for separation etc.

Word of advice - if you run into problems reaching Washington ESD by phone (and you probably will), there's a service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an actual person. They have this system that calls for you and gets you connected. Check out claimyr.com - there's even a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of busy signals.

•Never heard of that but honestly might be worth it. I spent 4 hours trying to call Washington ESD last time I had an issue.

•Is that legit? Seems too good to be true that someone can actually get you through to Washington ESD.

•I was skeptical too but it actually worked. Got connected to an agent in about 20 minutes instead of calling all day.

Don't file until you're actually unemployed! I made the mistake of filing while I was still technically employed (even though I knew I was getting laid off) and it created a whole mess with my claim.

•Good point, I'll wait until after my last day of work for sure.

•What kind of mess did it create? Now I'm worried I did something wrong with my claim.

Also make sure you understand the weekly claim filing process. You have to file every week to get paid, and there are specific days you can file. Don't miss those deadlines or you'll lose benefits for that week.

•When are those weekly filing days? Is it the same for everyone?

Zoe Wang
•It's based on the last digit of your Social Security number. Washington ESD will tell you your specific days when you file your initial claim.

•I always file on Sundays just to be safe. Never had an issue doing it that way.

The job search requirement kicks in immediately too, so start keeping track of your job search activities right away. You need to do at least 3 job search activities per week and log them in WorkSourceWA.

•3 activities per week? What counts as a job search activity?

•Applying for jobs, networking events, career fairs, updating your resume, creating job profiles on websites. Just make sure to document everything.

•Sounds like your claim might be in adjudication. That can take several weeks unfortunately. You should try calling to find out what's causing the delay.

•tried calling like 50 times, always busy or they hang up on me

•This is exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier. Perfect situation for their service - they specialize in getting through to Washington ESD when you can't reach them yourself.

One thing to remember is that your benefit amount is based on wages from a specific time period, not your most recent job. It's called the base period and it's usually from about 15 months ago to 3 months ago. So if you just started a high-paying job recently, your benefits might be lower than expected.

Lucy Lam
•That's weird, why don't they use your most recent wages?

Sarah Ali
•It's because employers need time to report wages to the state. There's also an alternate base period they can use in some cases if your regular base period doesn't give you enough wages to qualify.

Make sure you have your separation notice or termination letter ready when you file. Washington ESD will want to know exactly why you're unemployed - laid off, fired, quit, etc. The reason affects whether you can get benefits.

•I'm being laid off due to company downsizing, so that should be fine right?

Ryan Vasquez
•Yes, layoffs due to lack of work usually qualify. Just make sure your employer reports it correctly to Washington ESD.

Pro tip: take screenshots of everything when you file your claim and save all the confirmation numbers. The Washington ESD website can be glitchy and you want proof of what you submitted and when.

•This is great advice. I've had forms disappear on me before on government websites.

•Good thinking, I'll definitely do that when I file next week.

Don't forget about taxes! Unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can choose to have taxes withheld from your weekly payments or pay at tax time. I recommend having them withheld so you don't get hit with a big bill later.

Lucy Lam
•I didn't even think about taxes, thanks for mentioning that.

•Yeah, learned that lesson the hard way. Owed like $800 at tax time because I didn't have taxes withheld from my unemployment.

If you're getting any severance pay, that might affect when you can start collecting benefits. Washington ESD considers severance as wages, so you might have to wait until the severance period is over.

Lucy Lam
•I'm not getting severance, just getting paid through the end of the year for unused vacation time.

Ana Erdoğan
•Vacation payout usually doesn't delay benefits like severance does, but mention it when you file just to be safe.

The Washington ESD customer service is absolutely terrible. Waited on hold for 3 hours yesterday just to get disconnected. I swear they do it on purpose.

•I feel your pain. The phone system is definitely overwhelmed.

•This is why services like Claimyr exist - they basically solve the problem of not being able to get through to Washington ESD by phone. Worth checking out if you keep having connection issues.

•At this point I'm willing to try anything to avoid sitting on hold for hours.

Just wanted to add - if your claim gets denied for any reason, don't panic. You can appeal the decision. You have 30 days from the date of the determination to file an appeal.

Lucy Lam
•Good to know, hopefully I won't need to appeal but it's good to know the option exists.

•The appeals process can take months though, so definitely try to get your initial claim right the first time.

One more thing - make sure your contact information is current in your Washington ESD account. They'll send important notices by mail and email, and if they can't reach you it can cause problems with your claim.

Lucy Lam
•Thanks, I'll double-check all my contact info when I set up my account.

•And check your spam folder regularly! Sometimes Washington ESD emails end up there.
