When can i apply for unemployment in Washington - timing questions
Hi everyone, I'm getting laid off next month and trying to figure out the timing for when I can actually file my unemployment claim with Washington ESD. My last day of work is going to be January 15th but I'm not sure if I should wait until after that date or if I can file before? Also do I need to wait for my final paycheck to come through first? I've never done this before and don't want to mess up the timing and delay my benefits. Any guidance would be really appreciated!

You can file your claim the week after your last day of work. So if your last day is January 15th, you'd file your initial claim starting January 19th (the Sunday of the following week). Don't wait for your final paycheck - you can report that income when you do your weekly claims later. The key is to file as soon as you're eligible because there's usually a one-week waiting period before benefits start.

•Thank you! So I file the initial claim that Sunday but then when do I start doing the weekly claims?

•You'll do your first weekly claim the following Sunday after you file your initial claim. So you'd file initial claim Jan 19th, then your first weekly claim would be Jan 26th for the week of Jan 19-25.

Just make sure you have all your documents ready - Social Security card, driver's license, and employment info for the last 18 months. The Washington ESD website has a checklist of what you need before you start the application.

•Good point, I should gather all that stuff ahead of time. Do I need pay stubs or will they get that info directly from my employer?

•They'll get wage info from employers directly, but having your pay stubs can help if there are any discrepancies later.

One thing to be aware of - if you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD by phone to ask questions (which happens a lot), there's actually a service called Claimyr that can help you get connected to an agent. I found out about it at claimyr.com and they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. Saved me hours of calling and getting busy signals when I had questions about my claim timing.

•Oh interesting, I hadn't heard of that. Is it legit? I was worried about calling Washington ESD because I heard it's impossible to get through.

•Yeah it's legitimate, they basically help you skip the hold times and get connected to an actual Washington ESD agent. Really helpful when you need to talk to someone about your specific situation.

DONT WAIT!! I made the mistake of waiting like 2 weeks after I got laid off because I thought I needed to get my final paperwork first and it just delayed everything. File as soon as you're eligible!

•Yikes, that's exactly what I was worried about. Good to know to file right away.

•Same thing happened to me - I waited thinking I needed my final pay stub and it was a mistake. The system is set up for you to report income as you receive it during your weekly claims.

Also remember you have to be actively looking for work and available for work to qualify. Start keeping track of your job search activities from day one because you'll need to report them with your weekly claims.

•How many job applications do I need to do per week? I keep seeing different numbers.

•It's 3 job search activities per week in Washington. Can be applications, networking events, job fairs, etc. Keep detailed records of everything.

•And make sure you understand what counts as a valid job search activity. Washington ESD is pretty specific about this - just browsing job sites doesn't count.

The waiting week is so annoying but unfortunately that's just how it works in Washington. You won't get paid for your first week even if you're eligible for benefits.

•Wait so even if I file right away, I don't get benefits for the first week?

Savannah Glover
•Correct - there's a one week waiting period that you don't get paid for. It's separate from any adjudication delays.

Make sure to file online through the SecureAccess Washington portal. It's way faster than trying to file by phone and you can do it 24/7. The system walks you through everything step by step.

•Is that the same login I would use for other state services or do I need to create a new account?

•If you already have a SecureAccess Washington account you can use that, otherwise you'll need to create one. It's the same system for all state services.

One more tip - take screenshots of everything when you file your claim and save confirmation numbers. If anything goes wrong later you'll want that documentation.

•Good idea, I'll definitely do that. Better safe than sorry with government systems.

Also, if your claim ends up in adjudication for any reason (which can happen even with straightforward layoffs), that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier can really help you get through to an agent to check on the status. Adjudication can take weeks if there are any questions about your eligibility.

•Yeah my claim went into adjudication even though it was a clear layoff situation. Took 3 weeks to resolve and calling Washington ESD was a nightmare.

•Exactly why services like Claimyr exist - the phone system is overwhelmed and it's nearly impossible to get through on your own.

Don't forget you can also apply for other assistance while waiting for unemployment to kick in. Food assistance, housing help, etc. through DSHS if you need it.

•That's a good point, I should look into what other resources are available during the transition.

Just to recap the timeline for you: Last day of work Jan 15th → File initial claim starting Jan 19th → First weekly claim Jan 26th → Benefits would start the week of Jan 26th (minus the waiting week). As long as there are no adjudication issues, you should see your first payment around Feb 2nd or so.

•Perfect, this timeline really helps me plan. Thank you everyone for all the helpful advice!

•No problem! The key is just not to delay filing once you're eligible. The sooner you get in the system, the better.

And remember that Washington ESD has online resources and FAQs that can answer a lot of basic questions. The website is actually pretty comprehensive once you know where to look.

•I'll definitely check those out. Hopefully I can find answers there before having to call.

One last thing - make sure your address is current with Washington ESD because that's where they'll send any important notices. You don't want to miss something because it went to an old address.

•Good catch, I actually did move recently so I'll make sure to update that when I file.

Honestly, for anyone reading this thread who ends up with questions or issues with their Washington ESD claim, I can't recommend Claimyr enough. It's so much easier than spending hours trying to get through to an agent yourself. Really takes the stress out of dealing with the unemployment system.

•How much do they charge for that service? Seems like it would be worth it if it actually works.

•I don't want to get into pricing details here, but check their website. For me it was definitely worth it considering how much time and frustration it saved me.

Thanks again everyone! I feel much better prepared now. Going to start gathering my documents and mark my calendar to file right after my last day of work. Hopefully everything goes smoothly but at least now I know there are resources available if I run into issues.

Final reminder - start your job search immediately even while waiting for benefits to kick in. Washington takes the work search requirement seriously and you want to have a good record from day one.

•Absolutely, I'm already updating my resume and looking at job boards. Thanks for keeping me focused on that!

Just wanted to add that it's really important to be completely honest on your application about the reason for separation from your job. Even though it's a layoff, make sure you have documentation from your employer (like a layoff notice or termination letter) that clearly states it wasn't due to misconduct. This can help prevent your claim from going into adjudication unnecessarily. Also, if you have any union involvement or severance pay, make sure to report that accurately as it can affect your benefit timing and amount.

•This is really good advice about the documentation! I should definitely ask HR for a formal layoff letter when they give me notice. Better to have it upfront than scramble for it later if there are questions about my eligibility.
