When can I start applying for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD?
I'm getting laid off from my retail job next Friday and I'm wondering when exactly I can file my initial claim with Washington ESD. Should I wait until after my last day of work or can I apply before? I've never done this before and don't want to mess up the timing. Also worried about how long it takes to get approved since I need to start paying rent soon. Any advice on the best time to submit my application?

You can file your claim the week you become unemployed, but not before your last day of work. So if Friday is your last day, you could technically file that day or wait until the following week. The key is making sure you're actually unemployed when you file.

•Thanks! So I should wait until after I finish my shift on Friday to be safe?

Elliott luviBorBatman
•Exactly. Better to wait until you're officially done working to avoid any complications with your claim.

just file on sunday after your last day, thats what i did and it worked fine. the washington esd website is usually less busy on weekends too

•Good point about the website being less busy. I'll try Sunday then.

One thing to keep in mind is that there's a waiting week in Washington, so even if you file right away, you won't get paid for your first week of unemployment. Your benefits start from the second week. Make sure you have some savings to cover that gap.

•Wait, there's a waiting week? I didn't know that. So I won't get any money for the first week?

Mateusius Townsend
•Correct. The first week is unpaid, then you start receiving benefits from week two if you're approved.

•Actually, I thought they got rid of the waiting week during COVID. Is that back now?

•The waiting week was temporarily suspended but it's back in effect now. You can check the Washington ESD website for current policy.

I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for weeks about my claim status. Their phone lines are impossible. If you need to talk to someone, I found this service called Claimyr that actually got me connected to an agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Is that legit? I've never heard of paying someone to help you call a government office.

•I was skeptical too but it worked. They handle the waiting and get you through to an actual person at Washington ESD. Saved me hours of calling.

Make sure you have all your documents ready before you file - social security card, ID, employment history for the last 18 months, etc. The application asks for a lot of specific information.

•What kind of employment history do they want exactly?

•Employer names, addresses, dates of employment, reason for leaving, wages earned. Pretty detailed stuff.

ugh the washington esd system is so confusing, i made mistakes on my first claim and it took forever to fix

Rosie Harper
•What kind of mistakes? I want to avoid those.

Also remember you need to file your weekly claims every week even while your initial claim is being processed. Don't wait for approval to start doing your weekly certifications.

•Weekly claims? Is that different from the initial application?

Elliott luviBorBatman
•Yes, the initial claim establishes your eligibility. Weekly claims are where you report if you worked or looked for work that week. You do those every week to actually receive payments.

Rosie Harper
•Ok that makes sense. So I file the initial claim once, then weekly claims ongoing.

The job search requirements kick in right away too. You need to log your job search activities every week. Washington ESD is pretty strict about that now.

Rosie Harper
•How many jobs do I need to apply to each week?

Gemma Andrews
•I think it's 3 job search activities per week, but check the current requirements on their website. Activities can include applying, networking, job fairs, etc.

Whatever you do, don't lie on your application. Washington ESD does check with employers and if they catch you in a lie, you could be disqualified and have to pay everything back.

•Good to know. I'll be completely honest about everything.

expect the process to take a while if they need to verify anything with your employer. mine went into adjudication for like 5 weeks

Rosie Harper
•5 weeks?! What's adjudication?
0 coins
Mae Bennett
•its when they need to investigate something about your claim before approving it. like if your employer disputes the reason you left or something

•Adjudication is pretty common, especially for first-time filers. They just want to verify you're eligible for benefits.

I had good luck calling Washington ESD early in the morning around 8am when they first open. Lines are usually less busy then.

•I'll try that if I need to call them. Thanks for the tip!

Pro tip: screenshot everything during the application process. If there are any issues later, you'll want proof of what you submitted.

•Smart idea. I'll definitely do that.

If you do run into issues reaching Washington ESD by phone, that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier has been a lifesaver for me and several people I know. They handle all the waiting and callback stuff.

•How much does something like that cost?

Philip Cowan
•I don't want to get into pricing details, but for me it was worth it to actually talk to someone instead of spending days trying to get through.

Remember to keep track of all your unemployment payments for taxes. You'll need to report them as income next year.
0 coins
Rosie Harper
•Oh right, unemployment is taxable income. I'll need to set some aside for taxes.

the washington esd website crashes a lot during busy times so dont panic if you cant get in right away

Make sure your address is current in their system. Any mail from Washington ESD is important and you don't want it going to an old address.

•I just moved last month so I'll double check that when I file.

If you worked for multiple employers, you'll need information for all of them going back 18 months. Don't forget about any part-time or temporary jobs.

washington esd sends you a debit card for payments, not checks. takes about a week to get the card after your first payment is issued
0 coins
Rosie Harper
•Is there a way to get direct deposit instead?
0 coins
Vera Visnjic
•i think you can set up direct deposit but the default is the debit card

One last thing - if your employer offers severance pay, that might affect when you can start collecting unemployment. Check with Washington ESD about how severance impacts your eligibility timing.

Rosie Harper
•I'm not getting severance, but that's good to know for others who might be.
0 coins
Brielle Johnson
•Yeah severance can delay when your benefits start. Another reason to talk to Washington ESD directly if you have questions.

Thanks everyone for all the helpful advice! I feel much more prepared now. I'll file my claim on Sunday after my last day and make sure I have all my documents ready. Hopefully the process goes smoothly.

•And remember, if you need to actually speak with someone at Washington ESD and can't get through, Claimyr is there as an option. Sometimes talking to a real person makes all the difference.
