How soon to file for unemployment - Washington ESD timing questions
Got laid off yesterday from my retail job and I'm wondering about timing for filing my unemployment claim with Washington ESD. Should I file right away or wait? I keep seeing conflicting info online about when to apply. My last day of work was Tuesday and I have some unused vacation time they're paying out. Does that affect when I should file? Really stressed about getting this right since I need the benefits ASAP to cover rent next month.

File immediately! Don't wait at all. Washington ESD has a waiting week anyway, so the sooner you file the sooner your benefits can start. The vacation payout might delay your first payment but won't affect your filing date.

•Thanks! I was worried I'd mess something up by filing too early. Going to do it today then.

•Yeah definitely file now. I waited like a week when I got laid off and regretted it because you can't backdate claims in Washington.

File your Washington ESD claim the Sunday after your last day of work. Since you were laid off Tuesday, you should file this Sunday. The vacation payout will be reported as wages for the week you receive it, but it won't prevent you from filing your initial claim. Make sure you have your employer information ready and your social security card.

•Perfect timing advice, thank you! Do I need any other documents besides my social security card?

•You'll need your employer's name, address, and dates of employment. Having your last pay stub helps too for wage verification.

I had the same situation last year with vacation payout confusion. Here's what I learned - you can file right away but that vacation money will count as wages for whatever week you receive it. So if they pay it out next week, you'll report it on your weekly claim for that week and probably won't get benefits for that specific week. But file your initial claim NOW so you're in the system.

•That makes sense. So the vacation pay just affects one weekly claim, not my whole eligibility?

Anita George
•Exactly! It's just for that one week. After that you should get your regular benefit amount assuming you meet all the other requirements.

Ugh I'm in the same boat, got let go Monday and I've been calling Washington ESD for two days straight trying to get through to ask about my specific situation. The automated system just hangs up on me after being on hold forever. This is so frustrating when you need answers right away!

•I had the same problem trying to reach them by phone. Someone on here mentioned claimyr.com - it's a service that calls Washington ESD for you and gets you connected to an actual agent. I tried it last week and it worked great, got through in like 10 minutes. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of that but I'm desperate at this point. Will check it out, thanks!

•Claimyr actually works? I've been skeptical of anything that says it can get you through to Washington ESD faster.

•I was skeptical too but it really did work for me. Way better than spending hours redialing the regular number.

File ASAP but heads up - even when you do everything right, Washington ESD can take weeks to process your claim. Mine took 6 weeks last time and I had to keep calling to check on it. The system is just overwhelmed.

•6 weeks?? That's terrifying. How did you survive financially during that time?

•Had to borrow money from family. It was rough. That's why filing immediately is so important - every day counts.

Don't overthink it just file online at Washington ESD website today. The system walks you through everything step by step.

•Is the online application pretty straightforward? I'm not great with computer stuff.

•Yeah it's not too bad. Just have all your employment info handy before you start.

I filed mine literally the day after I got laid off and I'm glad I did. The waiting week starts from when you file, not when you lost your job. So if you wait a week to file, you're basically adding an extra week before you see any money.

•Good point about the waiting week. I definitely don't want to delay getting benefits any longer than necessary.

•Wait, what's this waiting week everyone keeps mentioning? I thought Washington got rid of that?

•No they still have it. It's the first week of your claim where you don't get paid, but you still have to file your weekly claim.

Just be prepared for them to ask for a TON of documentation later. I filed right away like everyone says but then they wanted pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, you name it. Took forever to get approved.

•Did they ask for all that right away or later in the process?

•It was like 3 weeks after I filed. Got a letter saying my claim was under adjudication and they needed more proof of wages.

The vacation payout thing can be tricky. I had a similar issue and what helped was calling Washington ESD to clarify exactly how to report it. But like others said, good luck getting through on the phone!

•That's where Claimyr comes in handy again. I used it specifically to ask about reporting vacation pay and the agent was super helpful explaining how it affects your weekly claims.

•Yeah I should have known about that service back then. Would have saved me hours of redialing.

File now!! I cannot stress this enough. I waited because I thought I might find another job quickly and it was a huge mistake. Even if you do find work right away, having the claim open doesn't hurt anything.

•That's a really good point. Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

•Exactly! Plus if you do find work but it doesn't work out, you're already in the system.

Whatever you do don't wait. I see people on here all the time who waited weeks to file and then are shocked when their benefits are delayed even more. Washington ESD doesn't move fast on anything.

•Got it, filing today for sure. Thanks everyone for the advice!

•Smart choice. And don't be discouraged if the process seems slow - it's normal for Washington ESD unfortunately.

I filed mine on a Sunday and got my first payment about 3 weeks later. Could have been faster but there were no issues with my claim. The key is filing that initial claim ASAP.

•3 weeks isn't too bad compared to some of the horror stories I've heard. Fingers crossed mine goes smoothly.

•Three weeks is actually pretty good for Washington ESD these days. I've seen people wait 2+ months.

The vacation pay situation varies by employer too. Some pay it out immediately, others spread it over several weeks. Just report whatever you actually receive each week when you file your weekly claims.

•Mine is coming as a lump sum next Friday so I'll report it all for that week then.

•Perfect, that's exactly how you should handle it.

File immediately and then start your job search right away too. Washington has work search requirements and they can ask for your job search log at any time. Better to start tracking from day one.

•Good reminder about the job search requirements. How many jobs do I need to apply to each week?

Kelsey Chin
•I think it's 3 job search activities per week but check the Washington ESD website to be sure. Can include applications, networking, job fairs, etc.

Don't stress too much about getting everything perfect on your initial application. You can always provide additional information later if they need it. The important thing is getting your claim date established.

•That's reassuring. I was worried about making a mistake that would mess up my whole claim.

•Yeah they're pretty good about letting you correct minor errors. The main thing is just getting started.
