When do I file unemployment claim with Washington ESD - timing questions

I got laid off yesterday from my retail job and I'm confused about when exactly I should file my unemployment claim with Washington ESD. Do I file right away or wait until next week? My last day of work was Thursday and I'm not sure if I should count that as my last day or if I need to wait until the week is completely over. Also heard something about waiting periods - is that still a thing? Really stressed about getting this right because I need the benefits to start ASAP.

File as soon as possible! There's no benefit to waiting. In Washington, you should file your initial claim within the first week after your last day of work. The sooner you file, the sooner your claim can be processed. Your benefit year starts the Sunday of the week you file, not when you were actually laid off.

Thanks! So I should file this weekend then? My last day was Thursday so should I wait until this Sunday or can I file today?

0 coins

You can file today. Don't wait - every day you delay could potentially delay your first payment.

Yeah definitely file right away. I made the mistake of waiting a few days when I got laid off last year and it just delayed everything. Washington ESD is pretty backed up so the earlier you get in the system the better.

How long did it take for your claim to get approved? I'm worried about the wait time.

It took about 3 weeks for mine but that was during a busy period. Could be faster now.

There's no waiting period anymore in Washington - that was eliminated a few years ago. You can potentially get paid for your first week of unemployment. Make sure you have all your employment info ready when you file - employer names, addresses, dates of employment, and reason for separation.

Oh good, I was worried about that waiting week thing. What if I don't have my employer's exact address?

You can look it up online or call them. Washington ESD needs accurate employer information to verify your claim.

I've been trying to call Washington ESD for weeks about my claim status and can never get through. The phone system is impossible. If you need to talk to someone after filing, there's actually a service called Claimyr that helps you get through to ESD agents. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

How much does that cost? Seems sketchy to pay someone to make a phone call.

It's worth it when you're dealing with urgent claim issues. Way better than sitting on hold for hours or getting disconnected.

I used Claimyr too when my claim got stuck in adjudication. Actually got to talk to someone at ESD same day instead of waiting weeks.

File online through the Washington ESD website. It's way faster than trying to call. Make sure you file during off-peak hours if possible - early morning or late evening when the system isn't as busy.

Good tip about timing. What time would you recommend?

I'd try before 8am or after 6pm on weekdays. Weekends are usually better too.

DONT WAIT!! I waited like 5 days thinking I needed to wait until the next week started and it messed up my whole benefit year. File immediately after your last day of work. The system will figure out the dates correctly.

Yikes that sounds stressful. Did you have to refile or were you able to fix it?

Had to call and get it straightened out which took forever. Just don't make my mistake!

Also remember you'll need to file weekly claims even while your initial claim is being processed. Don't skip those or you'll miss out on benefits for those weeks.

When do I file the first weekly claim? Right after I file the initial claim?

0 coins

Hattie Carson

•

You'll get instructions after filing your initial claim. Usually you can file your first weekly claim the Sunday after you file your initial claim.

Make sure you have your Social Security number, driver's license, and bank account info ready if you want direct deposit. Also helps to have pay stubs from your last job.

I don't have my most recent pay stub yet. Can I still file without it?

0 coins

Yes, you can file without it. ESD will verify your wages with your employer directly.

One thing to keep in mind - if your employer contests your claim, it could delay things. Hope that doesn't happen but just be prepared for the possibility of adjudication.

Why would they contest it if I was laid off? That seems unfair.

Sometimes there are disputes about the reason for separation. Usually not an issue with clear layoffs though.

i filed mine like 6 months after getting laid off and still got backpay so maybe its not that urgent? idk the system is confusing

0 coins

That's not typical and you probably missed out on some benefits. Always better to file right away.

0 coins

yeah probably shouldve done it sooner but it worked out ok

The Washington ESD website has a good checklist of what you need before filing. Definitely check that out first so you have everything ready. Nothing worse than getting halfway through and realizing you're missing something important.

Good idea, I'll look that up before I start the application.

Pro tip: screenshot or write down your confirmation number after you file. You'll need it for reference and it's easy to forget or lose.

Thanks for the reminder! I'm terrible at keeping track of confirmation numbers.

If you run into issues with your claim later and need to reach ESD, I had good luck using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Got through to an actual person instead of being stuck in phone tree hell.

How quickly did they get you connected?

Same day. Way better than the weeks I spent trying to call on my own.

Don't forget about the job search requirements! You'll need to be actively looking for work and keeping track of your job search activities. That starts right away even while your claim is processing.

•

How many jobs do I need to apply to per week?

0 coins

It depends on your situation but usually 3 job search activities per week. Check the ESD website for the specific requirements.

The sooner you file, the sooner you can start getting help. Don't overthink it - just get your claim in the system. You can always call later if you have questions about specific dates or details.

You're right, I'm probably overthinking this. Going to file today.

Good luck with your claim! The process seems overwhelming at first but it gets easier once you understand the system. Most people get approved without major issues if they were laid off through no fault of their own.
