When to apply for unemployment - timing question for Washington ESD claim
Got laid off yesterday and wondering about the timing for filing my unemployment claim with Washington ESD. Should I apply immediately or wait a few days? My last day of work was actually two weeks ago but I just got the official termination notice. I'm worried about messing up the dates and causing delays with my claim. Also not sure if I need to wait until I receive my final paycheck or can file now. Any advice on the best timing?

File as soon as possible! Washington ESD has a waiting week so the sooner you apply the better. You can file your claim online at esd.wa.gov even before your final paycheck arrives.

•Thanks! So I don't need to wait for my final pay stub then?

•Nope, you can file right away. Just make sure you have your employment dates and employer info ready.

Definitely apply ASAP. I waited a week to file thinking I needed more paperwork and it just delayed everything. The application process asks for your last day worked which sounds like it was two weeks ago in your case.

•Yeah my actual last day was December 15th but I just got the termination letter yesterday. Should I use December 15th as my last day worked?

Giovanni Mancini
•Yes use December 15th since that was when you actually stopped working. The termination notice date doesn't matter for UI purposes.

I had trouble getting through to Washington ESD when I needed to clarify my application dates. Spent hours calling their main number. Finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got connected to an agent in like 15 minutes. They have a video demo that shows exactly how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. Really helped me get my timing questions sorted out.

•Never heard of that service before. Did it actually work or just another scam?

•It's legit. Basically helps you get through the Washington ESD phone system without waiting on hold forever. Was worth it for me when I had urgent questions about my claim.

•Might need to try that if I run into issues. The phone system sounds like a nightmare from what I've read.

File immediately but be prepared for potential adjudication if there's any confusion about your dates. Washington ESD reviews claims when employment end dates don't match up perfectly with when benefits are requested.

•What's adjudication exactly? Sounds scary.

•It's just when they need to review your claim for eligibility. Usually takes 2-4 weeks but not always a big deal. Just be honest about your dates when filing.

umm i think you have to wait until your final paycheck clears? that's what someone told me but idk for sure

•No that's not correct. You can file before your final paycheck. Washington ESD will ask about any severance or final pay when you file your weekly claims.

•oh ok thanks for clarifying!

Update: Just filed my claim online. The process was pretty straightforward and only took about 20 minutes. Used December 15th as my last day worked like you all suggested. Thanks for the advice!

•Great! Now make sure you file your weekly claims every week even if your claim is still pending. Don't skip any weeks or you'll lose benefits.

•Good point. When do I file my first weekly claim?
0 coins
Giovanni Mancini
•You should be able to file your first weekly claim this Sunday for the week ending January 4th. Check your account on esd.wa.gov for the exact schedule.

I'm in a similar situation but my employer is disputing my termination. Should I still file right away or wait until that's resolved?
0 coins
Sofia Morales
•File anyway. If there's a dispute, Washington ESD will handle it during adjudication. Don't delay filing just because your employer might contest it.

•Ok that makes sense. Better to have the process started than waiting around.

THE WASHINGTON ESD SYSTEM IS SO CONFUSING!! Why can't they just make it simple - file when you lose your job, period. All these different dates and waiting periods make no sense.

Amara Nnamani
•I get the frustration but the system has to verify eligibility and work history. It's not perfect but filing immediately is still the best approach.

•Yeah I know you're right. Just venting because I struggled with this same timing question last year.

Pro tip: take screenshots of your application confirmation page and save all the reference numbers. You'll need them if you have to call Washington ESD later.

•Good advice! I did save my confirmation number just in case.

•Smart. Also write down the exact dates you used in your application. Consistency is key if they ask questions later.

Just wanted to add that if you worked in multiple states, the timing gets more complicated. Washington ESD has interstate claim procedures but definitely file in Washington if that's where your most recent job was.

•Thanks but I've only worked in Washington so that shouldn't be an issue for me.

•Perfect, then you're all set with the standard process. Should be straightforward.

One thing to watch out for - if you have any vacation pay or severance coming, that might affect your first few weeks of benefits. Washington ESD will ask about this during your weekly claim filing.

GalacticGuru
•I'm getting two weeks severance pay. Will that disqualify me completely?
0 coins
Zainab Ismail
•No not completely, but you'll need to report it when filing your weekly claims. It might delay your benefits for those weeks but won't affect your overall eligibility.
0 coins
Sofia Morales
•Exactly right. Severance is reportable income that affects when benefits start, not whether you qualify.

i filed like 3 months after i got laid off and still got benefits back to my original date so timing isn't THAT critical but obviously sooner is better

Amara Nnamani
•You can get retroactive benefits but there are limits. Generally better to file within the first few weeks to avoid complications.

•yeah true, i just got lucky i think. wouldn't recommend waiting that long

For anyone else reading this thread who runs into issues contacting Washington ESD about application timing - I mentioned Claimyr earlier and wanted to add that they were super helpful when I had questions about backdating my claim. The service really does work for getting through to actual ESD agents.

•How much does something like that cost though? Seems like it would be expensive.

•It's worth checking out their site for details. For me the value was getting answers quickly instead of spending days trying to reach someone at Washington ESD.

The key thing everyone should know is that your effective date for benefits is based on when you file, not when you lost your job. So even if you lost your job December 1st, if you don't file until January 1st, your claim starts January 1st.
0 coins
GalacticGuru
•Wait really? So I could lose benefits by waiting to file?
0 coins
Yara Nassar
•Exactly. Benefits don't automatically backdate to when you became unemployed. That's why filing immediately is so important.

Sofia Morales
•This is correct for initial applications. There are some exceptions for good cause delays but generally you want to file ASAP.

Also remember you need to register with WorkSourceWA as part of the job search requirements. You can do this right after filing your initial claim.

GalacticGuru
•Is that something I have to do immediately or can I wait a few days?
0 coins
Keisha Williams
•You have some time but I'd recommend doing it within the first week. It's required for maintaining your benefits and easier to do early than scramble later.

Quick question - if I got fired for attendance issues, should I still file immediately or will that hurt my chances?
0 coins
Sofia Morales
•File anyway. Washington ESD will determine if the termination disqualifies you during their review process. Don't self-eliminate by not filing.

Paolo Ricci
•Ok good to know. I was worried about wasting time on an application that would just get denied.

Been reading this thread and realized I should probably file my claim too. Got laid off last Friday and kept putting it off thinking I needed more documentation.
0 coins
Amara Nnamani
•Don't wait any longer! You can always provide additional documentation later if needed. The important thing is getting your claim started.

Amina Toure
•Thanks for the push. Going to file tonight.

One more timing tip - file your claim on Sunday through Wednesday if possible. Thursday and Friday tend to be busier on the Washington ESD website and you might experience slower loading times.

GalacticGuru
•Interesting, didn't know the day of the week mattered for online applications.

Oliver Zimmermann
•It's not a huge deal but I've noticed the site runs smoother earlier in the week. Might save you some frustration.

For anyone else who finds this thread later - the bottom line is file your Washington ESD claim as soon as you know you're unemployed. Don't wait for paperwork, final paychecks, or anything else. You can always provide additional info later but you can't get back the time lost by waiting to file.

GalacticGuru
•Perfect summary! That's exactly what I learned from everyone's responses here.

Giovanni Mancini
•Agreed. The sooner you file, the sooner you can start receiving benefits. Simple as that.
