How soon to apply for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD after job loss?
I just got laid off yesterday and I'm wondering how quickly I should file my unemployment claim with Washington ESD. My manager said the layoff is effective immediately but I'm still getting paid through the end of this week. Should I wait until my last paycheck or file right away? I've never been on unemployment before and don't want to mess anything up with the timing.

File your claim with Washington ESD as soon as possible! There's a waiting week before you can receive benefits anyway, so filing immediately protects your effective date. Even if you're getting paid through the end of the week, you can still file now.

•Thanks! I wasn't sure if filing while still technically employed would cause issues.

•Yeah definitely file ASAP. The waiting week means you won't get paid for your first week anyway, but you want to establish your claim date.

You want to file your initial claim within the first week after your job ends. Washington ESD uses your application date to determine your benefit year, so don't wait. You can file online at esd.wa.gov or call them, though calling can be really difficult to get through.

•I tried calling this morning and couldn't get through after 45 minutes on hold.

•The phone system is brutal. I used claimyr.com last month when I couldn't get through to Washington ESD - they have a service that calls for you and connects you to an agent. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Interesting, I'll check that out if I can't get through online.

just file online, way easier than calling. took me like 20 minutes to complete the whole application

•Good to know, I'll try the online application first.

BE CAREFUL about the dates you put down! If you mess up your last day of work it can delay your whole claim. Make sure you have your exact last day and your final paycheck info ready before you start the application.

•What if I'm not sure about my final paycheck amount yet? Should I wait until I receive it?

•No don't wait! You can estimate and update it later. The important thing is getting your claim filed. Washington ESD will verify your wages anyway.

I waited two weeks to file thinking I needed to wait until my severance was done and it was a mistake. Cost me money because I could have been in the system earlier. File immediately even if you have questions about timing.

•Oh no, how much did it cost you?

•About $800 because I lost two weeks of potential benefits. The benefit year is fixed once you file.

•Ouch, that's exactly why everyone says file right away. The system doesn't backdate benefits.

Question - do you have to be completely unemployed to file? I might get some part-time work while I'm looking for full-time.

•You can work part-time and still collect unemployment, but you need to report all wages on your weekly claims. Washington ESD will reduce your benefits based on what you earn.

•Right, and you still need to be actively looking for full-time work and meet the job search requirements even if you're working part-time.

The online system is down half the time anyway. I've been trying to file my weekly claim for two days and keep getting error messages.

•try clearing your browser cache, that usually fixes the login issues

•If you keep having issues, that's another situation where Claimyr can help - they can file claims over the phone for you when the online system isn't working.

Make sure you have all your employer information ready - company name, address, dates of employment, reason for separation. The application will ask for your last 18 months of work history.

•18 months? I've only been at this job for 8 months, do I need info from my previous job too?
0 coins
Sophia Long
•Yes, Washington ESD needs your complete work history for the base period to calculate your benefit amount. Bring W-2s or pay stubs if you have them.

Don't forget about the job search requirements! You'll need to make 3 job contacts per week and keep a log. Start looking immediately even while your claim is processing.

•What counts as a job contact? Just applying online or do I need to do more?

Mia Alvarez
•Online applications count, but also networking contacts, calling employers, attending job fairs. Keep detailed records of everything.

I've been on unemployment twice and both times I filed the day after my last day of work. Never had any issues with timing. The key is don't overthink it - just file as soon as you're unemployed.

•That's reassuring, thank you. I was worried about filing too early or too late.

Washington ESD is so slow with processing claims right now. My friend filed 3 weeks ago and still hasn't gotten her first payment. The system is completely overwhelmed.

•That's because of all the adjudication delays. If there's any question about your eligibility they put your claim on hold for weeks.

•Yep, and good luck getting someone on the phone to explain what's going on. I was on hold for 3 hours yesterday before giving up.

Just wanted to add - if you're union, check if your union has any specific procedures for filing unemployment. Some have agreements with Washington ESD that can affect your benefits.

•Not union, but good to know for others reading this.

File online at secure.esd.wa.gov if possible. The phone system is a nightmare and you'll waste hours trying to get through. I've never successfully reached someone by calling.

•That's exactly why I used Claimyr - they handle all the calling for you and actually get through to agents. Saved me so much frustration.

•How much does something like that cost? Seems like it would be expensive.

•It's actually pretty reasonable considering the time it saves. Way better than spending entire days trying to call.

Remember to file your weekly claims even if your initial claim is still processing! You have to maintain your claim to get benefits later.

•When do I start filing weekly claims? Right after I submit my initial application?
0 coins
Mia Alvarez
•You'll get instructions after your initial claim is processed. Usually you can start filing weekly claims within a few days of applying.

One more tip - take screenshots of everything during your application process. If something goes wrong later, you'll have proof of what you submitted and when.

•Great advice, I'll definitely do that. Thanks everyone for all the help!
