When do you get your unemployment money from Washington ESD?
I just got approved for unemployment benefits last week after waiting forever for adjudication to finish. My claim shows approved on the Washington ESD website but I haven't received any money yet. I filed my first weekly claim on Sunday and it says processed but no payment. When should I expect to actually get paid? I'm getting desperate here and need to know if I should be worried or if this is normal timing.

Usually takes 2-3 business days after your weekly claim is processed. Check your payment method - did you set up direct deposit or are you waiting for a debit card?

•I set up direct deposit but my bank account info might be wrong. How do I check that on the Washington ESD site?

•Log into your account and go to payment preferences. You can update your banking info there but it might delay your payment another few days.

If you just got approved, your first payment might take up to a week. The system has to process everything and sometimes there are delays.

•A week?? That seems really long. I thought unemployment was supposed to help people who need money now.

•Yeah it's frustrating but that's just how Washington ESD works. After your first payment it usually comes faster.

I had a similar situation and ended up calling Washington ESD to check on my payment status. Turned out there was an issue with my bank routing number that was holding everything up. If you can't get through on the phone, try using Claimyr - it's a service that helps you actually reach someone at Washington ESD. They have a demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ and the website is claimyr.com. Saved me hours of busy signals.

•Never heard of Claimyr before but anything is better than sitting on hold for 3 hours just to get hung up on

•Exactly! It's way easier than trying to get through on your own. Worth checking out if you need to talk to someone about your payment.

•Ok good to know, I'll wait until Wednesday before I start panicking then

•Mine always comes on Tuesday like clockwork. If it doesn't come by Thursday something is definitely wrong.

The Washington ESD payment schedule is usually pretty consistent once you get in the system. First payment can be delayed because they do extra verification. After that you should get paid within 2-3 days of filing your weekly claim. Make sure you're filing correctly and answering all the questions about job search activities.

•What do you mean by job search activities? I've been looking for work but didn't know I had to report specific things.

James Martinez
•You need to log your job search activities in WorkSourceWA. It's required to keep getting benefits. You should be doing at least 3 job search activities per week.

•Oh no, I haven't been doing that at all. Will that affect my payment?

I'm in the same boat - approved but no money yet. This is so stressful when you're already broke and need help paying bills. The whole system seems designed to make it as hard as possible.

•I feel you on the stress. Hang in there, the money will come. It's just slow the first time.

•Thanks, trying to stay positive but rent is due next week and I'm freaking out a little

Check your payment history on the Washington ESD website. It should show if the payment was issued and when. Sometimes the issue is with your bank not processing it quickly.

•Where exactly do I find payment history? I've been looking all over the site.

Alexander Zeus
•It's under 'View Claim Status' or 'Payment Information' depending on which page you're on. The site layout is confusing.

IF YOU'RE NOT GETTING PAID THERE'S PROBABLY AN ISSUE WITH YOUR CLAIM!! Don't just wait around, call them and find out what's wrong. I waited 3 weeks thinking it was normal and turns out I had a wage issue that needed to be fixed.

•Calm down with the caps lock but you're right that waiting too long isn't smart. Better to call and check.

•sorry about the caps but I'm just trying to help people not make the same mistake I did

I remember my first unemployment payment took forever too. Now I get it every Tuesday like clockwork. Just be patient with the first one, it really does take longer to process everything initially.

•How long did your first payment take exactly? I'm on day 5 and getting worried.

•I think it was about 8 business days from when I filed my first weekly claim. But that was a couple years ago, might be different now.

The debit card option is faster than direct deposit for the first payment in my experience. If you're still waiting you might want to switch to that.

•Can I switch payment methods after I already set up direct deposit?

Sebastian Scott
•Yes you can change it in your account settings but it might delay your current payment while they process the change.

I used Claimyr when I had payment issues and they helped me get through to someone who could explain what was going on. Turned out my employer had disputed my claim and I never got notified. Definitely worth trying if you can't get answers.

•That's scary that your employer could dispute it without you knowing. How did you find out about that?

•The Washington ESD agent I talked to through Claimyr explained it all. They can see stuff in the system that doesn't show up on your online account.

payments come faster once you get in the routine. first one is always slow because they verify everything. just make sure you keep filing weekly claims even if you haven't been paid yet or you'll lose your benefits

•Good point about continuing to file weekly claims. I was wondering if I should stop since I haven't been paid yet.

•Never stop filing weekly claims! That's the biggest mistake people make. Keep filing no matter what.

The timing really depends on when you file during the week. If you file on Sunday you usually get paid Tuesday or Wednesday. If you file later in the week it might not process until the following week.

•I always file on Sunday morning just to make sure it gets processed quickly. Good habit to get into.

•Same here, Sunday morning is the best time to file your weekly claim if you want fastest payment.

Make sure you're not missing any required steps. Sometimes there are identity verification or work search requirements that can hold up payments even after you're approved.

Emma Garcia
•I did the identity verification but I'm not sure about work search requirements. Where do I find info about that?

•Check the WorkSourceWA website - that's where you log your job search activities. You need to be registered there and logging activities to keep getting benefits.

If it's taking longer than a week for your first payment, something is probably wrong. I'd try calling Washington ESD or using one of those calling services to get through and check on the status.

•I heard about Claimyr from other people on here. They help you get through to Washington ESD when you can't reach them on your own. Worth a try if you're stuck.

The whole payment system is a mess honestly. I've been getting unemployment for 2 months and sometimes it comes on Tuesday, sometimes Wednesday, once it was Thursday. No consistency at all.

Hannah Flores
•At least you're getting paid consistently even if the timing varies. Some people have way bigger problems with the system.

•True, I shouldn't complain too much. The system works eventually, just not as smoothly as it should.

check your email for any notices from Washington ESD. sometimes there are issues they need you to resolve before they can pay you

Emma Garcia
•I checked and don't see any emails from them. Should I be worried or is no news good news?

•probably good news but you can always call to double check if you're concerned

I remember being in your exact situation - approved but no payment yet. Turned out my bank account number was wrong by one digit. Once I fixed it the money came in 2 days. Double check all your banking info is correct.

•How did you figure out the account number was wrong? Did Washington ESD tell you or did you just guess?

•I called and they told me there was a payment issue. That's when I realized I'd entered the wrong account number when I set up direct deposit.

The first payment is always nerve-wracking because you don't know what to expect. Once you get into the rhythm it becomes predictable. Just hang in there and it should come through soon.

Based on what you described, it sounds like everything is processing normally. First payments often take 5-7 business days. If you don't see it by Friday, then I'd start making calls to find out what's going on.

Emma Garcia
•Ok that makes me feel better. I'll wait until Friday and then start calling if nothing shows up.

•Good plan. Most likely it will show up before then, but it's always smart to have a backup plan for following up.
