When do you receive first unemployment payment after filing with Washington ESD?
I filed my initial unemployment claim with Washington ESD two weeks ago and I'm still waiting for my first payment. My claim was approved and I've been filing my weekly claims on time. The website just says 'processing' but doesn't give me any timeline. I'm getting really stressed about bills piling up. How long does it usually take to get that first payment once everything is approved? I thought it would be faster than this.

Typically Washington ESD processes first payments within 7-10 business days after your claim is approved and you've filed your first weekly claim. However, there can be delays if there are any verification issues or if your claim needs additional review. Check your account for any pending issues that might be holding things up.

•I checked and don't see any pending issues. It's been 10 business days already so I'm getting worried something went wrong.

•Same thing happened to me last month. Took about 12 days total before I saw the deposit hit my account.

The waiting period can vary but generally you should see your first payment within 2 weeks of filing your initial weekly claim. Make sure you've set up direct deposit in your account - that speeds things up compared to waiting for a check in the mail.

•I did set up direct deposit right away. Maybe I should call them to check on the status?

•Calling is worth a try but their phone lines are usually swamped. The hold times can be brutal.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD by phone, I found this service called Claimyr that actually got me connected to an agent within minutes. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. I was skeptical at first but it really worked for checking on my payment status.

•Never heard of that before. Is it legit or some kind of scam?

•It's legitimate - they just help you get through the phone system faster. I used it when my payments were delayed and the agent was able to tell me exactly what was holding things up.

•Might have to try that if I don't hear anything by tomorrow. Thanks for the tip!

ugh the waiting is the worst part... i filed 3 weeks ago and still nothing, starting to think i did something wrong when i filled out the forms

•If it's been 3 weeks you definitely need to call and find out what's going on. That's too long for a normal processing delay.

•tried calling like 50 times, always get hung up on or the line is busy

For me it was exactly 9 business days from when I filed my first weekly claim to when the money showed up in my bank account. But I know some people have had longer waits, especially if there are any issues with their employer information or work history.

•That gives me hope! I'm at day 10 so maybe it'll come through soon.

•Mine took 2 weeks but that was because they had to verify my identity first. Once that was done the payments started coming regularly.

THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN!!! I've been waiting a month for my first payment and nobody can tell me why. Meanwhile my rent is due and I'm living off credit cards. Washington ESD is completely useless!!!

•A month is definitely not normal. Have you tried going through the appeal process or contacting your state representative?

•I don't even know where to start with appeals. This whole system is designed to make you give up.

•Don't give up! A month delay usually means there's a specific issue that needs to be resolved. You really need to get an agent on the phone to find out what's blocking your claim.

I work in HR and deal with unemployment claims regularly. The typical timeline is 7-14 business days for first payments, but it can be longer if there are any red flags in the system. Common delays include mismatched SSN information, employer contests, or incomplete work history. The key is getting someone on the phone to check your specific case.

•That's really helpful context. I don't think my employer would contest it since I was laid off due to budget cuts.

Paolo Rizzo
•Budget cuts should be straightforward. If your employer filed everything correctly and you've been filing weekly claims on time, it's probably just processing delays.

•My employer contested my claim even though I was clearly laid off. Added weeks to the process while they investigated.

I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and it was actually pretty helpful. Got through to an agent in about 10 minutes instead of the usual hours of trying. The agent was able to tell me my payment was processing and would be released the next business day. Worth checking out if you're stuck.

•It's worth it if you need answers quickly. Much better than spending hours on hold or never getting through at all.

My sister had to wait 3 weeks for her first payment but then everything was fine after that. Sometimes they just need extra time to verify everything on new claims. Don't panic yet if it's only been 2 weeks.

•Good to know it's not just me. I'll give it a few more days before I really start worrying.

•Yeah mine was delayed too but once it started coming it was reliable every week.

Check your online account for any alerts or messages. Sometimes they request additional documentation and if you miss it, your payments get held up. I almost missed a request for wage verification that would have delayed everything.

•I check every day and haven't seen any new messages or requests. My account just shows my weekly claims as processed.

•If everything looks good on your end then it's probably just normal processing time. The system is slow but it usually works eventually.

been there! the waiting is torture when you're counting on that money. mine took about 2 weeks but then was deposited every tuesday after that like clockwork

Sofia Perez
•That's what I'm hoping for - just need to get through this initial waiting period.

If you set up direct deposit, payments usually come on Tuesdays or Wednesdays. If you're getting paper checks, add another 3-5 days for mail delivery. Direct deposit is definitely the way to go for faster payments.

The frustrating part is they don't give you any real timeline estimates. Just 'processing' forever until suddenly the money appears. I wish they'd be more transparent about what's actually happening behind the scenes.

•Agreed! A simple status tracker would make this so much less stressful.

•Exactly! Even just knowing if it's normal processing time or if there's an actual issue would help.

Try calling the Washington ESD customer service line first thing in the morning right when they open. I had better luck getting through around 8 AM than later in the day when everyone's calling.

Sofia Perez
•I'll try that tomorrow morning. What time exactly do they open?

Omar Fawzi
•I think it's 8 AM but check their website to be sure. Set multiple alarms and call right when they open.

•I tried that strategy and still couldn't get through. The lines are just overwhelmed no matter what time you call.

Just an update - I finally got through using Claimyr after reading about it here. The agent told me my payment was actually released yesterday and should show up in my account tomorrow. Sometimes the online system doesn't update right away with payment status. Thanks everyone for the advice!

For future reference, your first payment includes your waiting week plus any weeks you've filed claims for. So if you filed 2 weekly claims, your first payment should cover both weeks. Just wanted to clarify that in case anyone was confused about the amounts.

Sofia Perez
•That's good to know! I was wondering if I'd get paid for both weeks I've filed or just one.

Sean Kelly
•Yeah the first payment can be bigger than expected because it includes multiple weeks. Don't worry if the amount looks different than what you calculated.

The good news is once you get that first payment, the rest usually come on schedule. It's just that initial processing time that's unpredictable. Hang in there - it will come through.
