How to get paid for unemployment - Washington ESD payment delays?

I submitted my initial unemployment claim 2 weeks ago and completed my first weekly claim but haven't received any payment yet. My Washington ESD account shows 'claim processed' but no payment dates or amounts. I'm getting really stressed about rent and bills piling up. Does anyone know how long it typically takes to get your first unemployment payment? I thought it was supposed to be automatic once approved but I feel like I'm missing something important.

First payments usually take 2-3 weeks after your initial claim is approved. You need to make sure you're filing your weekly claims every week even if you haven't been paid yet. Check your payment method in your account - did you set up direct deposit or are you waiting for a debit card?

0 coins

I did set up direct deposit but haven't seen anything in my bank account. Should I be getting some kind of confirmation email when payments are processed?

0 coins

Yes, you should get an email notification when your payment is processed. Check your spam folder too. You can also see payment history in your SecureAccess Washington account under benefit payments.

0 coins

Are you sure your claim was actually approved? Sometimes it shows 'processed' but there could be an adjudication issue holding up payments. Log into your account and check if there are any pending issues or if it says 'adjudication in progress' anywhere.

0 coins

I don't see any adjudication notices but it's honestly confusing to navigate. Where exactly should I be looking for pending issues?

0 coins

In your SecureAccess Washington account, go to 'Your Benefit Year' and look for any alerts or pending determinations. Also check the 'Correspondence' section for any letters from Washington ESD.

I had the same problem last month - took forever to get through to someone at Washington ESD to figure out what was going on. The phone lines are always busy and they hang up on you after being on hold for an hour. I ended up using this service called Claimyr that actually got me through to an agent in like 10 minutes. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ and their site is claimyr.com. Might be worth checking out if you can't get answers from your online account.

0 coins

Is that service legit? I'm desperate to talk to someone but don't want to get scammed.

0 coins

Yeah it's totally legitimate. They don't ask for any personal info or passwords, they just help you get through the phone system. I was skeptical too but it actually worked.

0 coins

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll check it out if I can't figure this out through the website.

Did you complete your job search activities for the weeks you filed? In Washington you need to do 3 job search activities per week and log them in WorkSourceWA. If you didn't do this, it could be holding up your payments even if your claim was approved.

0 coins

Oh no, I didn't know about the job search requirement! I thought that was only for people who had been unemployed for a while. Do I need to go back and add activities for the weeks I already filed?

0 coins

You need to complete the job search activities for each week before you can get paid for that week. You might be able to go back and add them retroactively but you should call Washington ESD to confirm.

The whole system is a mess! I've been waiting 6 weeks for my first payment and nobody can tell me why. They keep saying 'processing' but what does that even mean?? I'm about to lose my apartment.

0 coins

Six weeks is way too long. You should definitely appeal or request an escalation. Have you tried contacting your state representative's office? They sometimes can help with Washington ESD issues.

0 coins

I didn't know I could do that. How do I find my state rep's office?

0 coins

same boat here, filed 3 weeks ago and nothing. this is ridiculous

0 coins

At least I'm not alone in this situation. It's so stressful not knowing when money will come in.

0 coins

One thing to check - make sure your benefit year establishment shows the correct weekly benefit amount. Sometimes there are errors in the wage calculation that delay payments. You can find this in your account under 'Monetary Determination'.

0 coins

I see a weekly benefit amount listed but I'm not sure if it's correct. It's based on wages from my last job but I had two jobs last year. Should both be included?

0 coins

Yes, Washington ESD should use wages from all employers during your base period. If you think wages are missing, you'll need to contact them to get it corrected.

0 coins

I work at a temp agency and deal with this all the time. Most payment delays are due to: 1) Missing job search activities 2) Adjudication issues 3) Wrong payment method 4) Identity verification problems. Check all of these first before calling.

0 coins

This is really helpful, thank you! I'll go through each of these to see if any apply to my situation.

0 coins

Good list. I'd add missing employer separation information to that. Sometimes Washington ESD is waiting for your former employer to respond to their inquiry.

0 coins

Just want to add that you should keep filing your weekly claims even if you haven't been paid yet. If you miss filing for a week, you could lose benefits for that week permanently.

0 coins

Good point, I've been filing every week but was starting to wonder if I should stop since I'm not getting paid.

Update on the Claimyr thing - I used them again yesterday to check on an overpayment notice and got through to an agent immediately. They were able to explain exactly what happened and how to appeal it. Definitely recommend if you're stuck and can't get through the normal phone lines.

0 coins

How much does it cost to use that service?

0 coins

They focus on the value of getting through to an agent quickly rather than the cost. For me it was worth it to get answers immediately instead of wasting hours on hold.

Check if you have any old unemployment claims that might be interfering. Sometimes if you had a claim from a previous year that wasn't properly closed, it can cause issues with new claims.

0 coins

I did file for unemployment briefly in 2023 but only collected for a few weeks. Could that be causing problems?

0 coins

Possibly. You might need to call Washington ESD to make sure your old claim is properly closed and not interfering with your new one.

0 coins

Make sure you completed the ID verification process if they asked for it. I had to upload my driver's license and social security card before they would release any payments.

0 coins

I don't remember being asked for ID verification but I'll check my account for any pending requirements.

0 coins

The waiting is the worst part. I remember being so anxious about my first payment. It did eventually come through but took about 3 weeks total. Hang in there!

0 coins

Thanks for the encouragement. It's good to know other people have been through this and gotten their payments eventually.

0 coins

Don't forget to report any work or income during the weeks you're claiming. Even if it's just a few hours of work, you need to report it or it could hold up your payments.

0 coins

I haven't worked at all since I filed but I'll make sure to report it if I do any side work.

0 coins

If you're really desperate, some food banks and community organizations can help with emergency assistance while you're waiting for unemployment payments. Don't be afraid to ask for help.

0 coins

That's a good suggestion. I might need to look into that if this drags on much longer.

0 coins

Washington ESD is so backed up right now. I work for a nonprofit that helps people with benefits and we're seeing tons of payment delays. Most do get resolved within a month but it's really tough on people.

0 coins

A month seems like forever when you have bills due. Is there any way to expedite the process?

0 coins

Unfortunately there's no official expedite process, but contacting your representatives or using services like Claimyr to get through to agents can sometimes help move things along.

0 coins

I had this exact same problem and it turned out my bank routing number was entered wrong. Check your direct deposit information very carefully - even one wrong digit will cause payments to fail.

0 coins

Oh wow, I should double-check my banking info. That would be such a simple fix if that's the problem.

0 coins

Yeah, I felt so stupid when I realized the mistake but I was just happy to finally get my payments. They deposited all the back payments at once.

0 coins

Try calling first thing in the morning at 8 AM when they open. You might have better luck getting through then.

0 coins

I've tried that but still get busy signals. Maybe I need to keep trying different times.

0 coins

This thread has been really helpful. I'm in a similar situation and didn't realize there were so many potential causes for payment delays. Going to check all these things in my account.

0 coins

Glad it's helping you too! I feel like I have a much better understanding of what might be going wrong now.

0 coins

These kinds of threads are why I love this community. So much shared knowledge and support.

0 coins

Final update from me - if anyone is still having trouble getting through to Washington ESD, I can't recommend Claimyr enough. I've used them three times now and every time I get connected to an agent within minutes instead of hours. Check out their demo video to see how it works.

Thanks for all your help in this thread! I'm going to try the suggestions here first and then maybe try Claimyr if I still can't get answers.
