Payment delays after ESD approval - 8 days and still waiting for direct deposit

I got approved for unemployment benefits last Tuesday and my ESD account shows 'paid' status for my first two weekly claims ($872 total). It's now been 8 days and still nothing in my bank account. My direct deposit info is 100% correct - I triple checked it. The ESD website says payments typically process within 2 business days after a weekly claim is approved. Is anyone else experiencing longer-than-normal wait times for their money to show up? Should I be worried something's wrong with my claim or bank info? Getting kinda desperate here as rent is due next week.

This is actually pretty normal right now. ESD's payment processing has been running slower than usual. Several people in my work group who got laid off are experiencing the same thing. If your claim says 'paid' in the portal, the money is definitely coming - it's just taking longer to process through the banking system. Mine took 9 business days last month despite the website saying 2 days. As long as your claim status shows 'paid,' I wouldn't worry yet.

Thanks for the reassurance. I've never been on unemployment before so wasn't sure if this was normal or if something was wrong. Did you eventually get your payment without having to call them?

Have either of you checked that your bank information is correctly entered in the ESD system? A common issue is that people enter their account/routing numbers incorrectly, or their bank account has a block on ACH deposits. You should verify both of these things before assuming it's just a delay.

I waited 12 days after my claim showed 'paid' before I saw the money. Called ESD 47 TIMES trying to talk to someone and NEVER got through. Their automated system is a JOKE and just hangs up on you when they're 'too busy' (which is ALWAYS). Total nightmare. When I finally did get my money it just appeared suddenly with no explanation for the delay.

Wow, that's awful! I've tried calling them twice already and just got the busy signal. Did you try sending them a message through the portal? I'm wondering if that might be faster than calling.

I sent THREE messages through the portal and never got responses to any of them. The whole system is broken!!

If you need to actually speak with someone at ESD, I used a service called Claimyr that got me through to an agent in about 20 minutes after I'd been trying for days on my own. They have a system that keeps dialing until it gets through the busy signals. It really helped me sort out a payment issue I was having. You can check out how it works at claimyr.com or watch their demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. My payments started arriving within 2 days after I finally spoke with an agent who fixed something in their system.

Thanks for the suggestion! I might try that if my payment doesn't come through by Monday. Did they need to do anything special to fix your payment issue?

In my case, there was a flag on my account that was holding up the payment process. The agent removed it right away once I explained my situation. The ESD rep told me they're dealing with a backlog of payments that's causing some of the delays, but certain accounts get stuck in their system and need manual intervention.

I haven't called my bank yet - that's a good idea. I'll do that tomorrow morning to see if they're holding anything.

It took 7 business days for my first payment to arrive, but now they come regularly every week, usually 3 days after I file my weekly claim. First payments often take longer because they're setting everything up in their system. I wouldn't panic until it's been at least 10 business days (so two full work weeks). One thing to check: Did you select direct deposit during your initial application? Sometimes people accidentally select the debit card option and then wonder why their bank account isn't getting the money. If you did select the debit card, you'll have to wait for it to arrive in the mail.

Yes, I definitely selected direct deposit and entered my banking info. The payment status page specifically says "direct deposit" as the payment method. I'm on business day 6 now so I guess I'll give it a few more days before really worrying.

Just to clarify some misinformation in this thread: ESD's official payment timeline is 2-3 business days after a weekly claim is processed, but first payments often take longer. The current average for initial payments is 7-9 business days. If you see "paid" status, that means it has been approved for payment but doesn't necessarily mean the ACH transfer has been initiated yet. If it's been more than 10 business days since your claim showed "paid" status, then you should contact ESD as there may be an issue. The best days to call are Tuesday through Thursday between 1-3pm when call volumes are typically lower. Also, check your spam folder for any emails from ESD requesting additional information, as this can hold up payments.

Thanks for the detailed info. Today is business day 6, so I'll wait until next Wednesday before trying to contact them. I've checked my spam folder and don't see anything from ESD.

anyone know if the holiday next week will delay payments more???

Yes, the upcoming holiday will likely add at least one extra business day to processing times. ESD doesn't process payments on federal holidays, and banks don't process ACH transfers on holidays either. So plan accordingly!

UPDATE: My payment finally hit my account this morning! That makes 10 calendar days (8 business days) from when it showed as "paid" in the system. Thanks everyone for your help and reassurance that this is somewhat normal. Huge relief to finally have the money.

Great news! The first payment is almost always the slowest. Your future payments should come more predictably now that the initial setup is complete.
