ESD payment timeline after claim approval - when to expect first deposit and backpay?
My partner's unemployment claim finally got approved last Thursday or Friday (showing benefit approval through June 18th, 2025). We're really struggling financially right now, and I'm trying to figure out our budget for the next couple weeks. Does anyone know how quickly ESD typically deposits the first payment after approval? Also, will they pay him for all the weeks he's been filing while waiting for approval? Do those back payments come all at once or spread out? Our landlord is getting impatient and utility bills are piling up fast. Any insights from people who've recently gone through this would be super helpful!

Congrats on the approval! In my experience, the first payment usually hits your account within 48-72 hours after approval if he has direct deposit set up. If he's using the ESD debit card, it can take an extra day or two. And yes, he should receive all back payments for weeks he filed and was eligible for in one lump sum. Make sure all those weekly claims show 'paid' status in his online account.

•Thank you! He does have direct deposit set up, so hopefully we'll see something this week. I'll have him check the claim status for each week. Do you know if the lump sum back payment comes at the same time as the first regular weekly payment, or is it processed separately?

Just to add some important details - payments are usually processed the business day after approval, but can take 24-48 hours to show in your account depending on your bank. The back payments should come as one lump sum, but occasionally ESD processes them as separate transactions from regular weekly payments. Make sure your partner continues filing weekly claims even while waiting for the money to arrive, as missing a weekly certification can cause payment delays.

my claim got aproved in april and i got ALL my back pay in one big deposit like 3 days later!! it showed as pending in my bank acct for one more day tho. best feeling ever opening my banking app and seeing that deposit lol

DON'T COUNT ON IT COMING QUICKLY!! My claim said "approved" but then got stuck in some kind of payment review for ANOTHER 2 WEEKS before I got paid. ESD is a NIGHTMARE and their systems are broken. Call them ASAP to make sure there's no hold on the payments - you don't want to be waiting forever like I did!!! ☹️

•They said something about "additional identity verification" but I had ALREADY done all that. The worst part was I couldn't get through on the phone for DAYS to ask what was happening. The website just kept showing "payment pending" with no explanation!

Quick question - is the June 18th date the end of his benefit year or just how far they've approved so far? Because sometimes they only approve for certain periods and you have to reapply... unless I'm thinking of something else totally...

make sure he checks all his past weekly claims still say "paid" not "pending" on the eServices dashboard. my boyfriend's claim got approved but 3 of his past weekly claims were still stuck in pending status and he had to call to get them fixed before getting paid

Just checking back - has your partner received the payment yet? It's been a few days since your post. One other thing to mention is that sometimes banks place holds on large deposits, especially first-time government payments, so even after ESD processes it, your bank might hold it for 1-2 business days. If nothing has shown up yet, I would definitely call ESD to verify the payment status.

•Thank you for checking back! We actually got the regular weekly payment yesterday, but the back pay hasn't come through yet. I'm going to have him call tomorrow if we don't see it by then. Hoping it's just processing separately like someone mentioned earlier.
