ESD approved claim but backpay not received after 'paid' status - when to expect?

I've been checking my ESD account obsessively since getting approved on March 14th. My status for the three previous weeks all shows 'paid' but I haven't received any money in my account yet. Anyone know how long it typically takes for backpay to actually hit your account after the system shows 'paid'? My rent is due next week and I was really counting on having this money by now. Starting to get nervous! This is my first time on unemployment so I'm not sure what's normal timing vs. when I should start worrying about something being wrong.

Congrats on getting approved! When it shows 'paid' in the system, it usually takes 2-3 business days for direct deposit, or 5-7 business days if you're getting it on the ESD debit card. Did you double-check that your banking info is correct in your ESD account? Sometimes that's the holdup.

Thanks! My banking info is definitely correct - triple checked it when I set up my account. Today is business day 3 since it switched to 'paid' so maybe I should give it one more day before panicking.

I did direct deposit to my checking account. Are you saying I should have done the debit card instead?

When my claim was first approved last year, I had the same issue. The system showed 'paid' but the money took 4 business days to appear in my account. ESD processes payments in batches, and depending on when your claim was finalized, you might have just missed a payment batch. Also, first payments sometimes take longer because they go through additional verification steps that subsequent payments don't require. If you don't see the money by the end of the week, call ESD to check if there's an issue. But in my experience, that first payment delay is pretty normal.

That makes me feel better - I was worried something was wrong with my claim. I'll wait until the end of the week before getting too concerned.

The EXACT same thing happened to me back in January!! It showed paid for like 5 days before the money actually showed up. ESD's systems are so slow its ridiculous. But dont worry it will come through eventually.

Thanks for sharing your experience! It's reassuring to know I'm not the only one who's dealt with this.

If it's been more than 3 business days since it changed to 'paid' status, something might be wrong. The ESD system is notoriously glitchy. I had a similar issue where it said paid but the money never came. Turned out there was a flag on my account for potential identity verification that nobody told me about! I wasted two weeks waiting when I could have been resolving the issue. Try calling ESD directly but GOOD LUCK getting through their phone system. I spent literally 4 hours on hold last month and then got disconnected.

I had the same problem getting through to ESD! After days of failed attempts I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and they got me connected to an agent in about 20 minutes. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 that shows how it works. It was so much better than trying to call on my own and waiting on hold forever. The agent was able to tell me exactly why my payment was delayed and fixed it right away.

Bank holidays can also affect payment timing. Was March 14th by any chance near a weekend or holiday? If so, that could add extra days to the processing time. Also, different banks have different policies about when they make ESD deposits available - some do it immediately upon receipt while others might hold the funds for 24 hours even after they receive them.

I didn't even think about the bank's processing time! March 14th was a Thursday so maybe that's part of the delay with the weekend in between.

SERIOUSLY!! 'Paid' should mean PAID not 'we're thinking about paying you maybe someday' 🙄

Actually, 'paid' means ESD has processed the payment on their end and sent the payment instruction to the bank or card processor. It doesn't mean the money has arrived in your account yet. There are multiple systems involved: ESD's payment system, the ACH transfer network, and your bank's processing system. Each step takes time. From what you've described, I think you'll see the money very soon. First payments almost always take longer than subsequent ones. Once you're in their regular payment cycle, it becomes much more predictable.

Update: The money just hit my account this morning! You were right about the timing. Such a relief! Thanks everyone for your help and sharing your experiences.
