ESD shows 'paid' status for backpay but nothing in my bank account yet - normal delay?

Super confused right now. I was approved for unemployment backpay from February through now (about 4 months worth) and my ESD account updated yesterday to show 'paid' status for all those weeks. It's a pretty substantial amount (around $8,700) but nothing is showing up in my bank account yet - not even as pending! My regular weekly payments usually hit my account the next day. Anyone know if there's a different timeline for larger backpay amounts? Starting to worry something went wrong with the deposit info or that it got flagged somehow. How long should I wait before panicking?

Thank you! That's a relief to hear. I'll try to be patient through the weekend then.

Large backpay amounts often take 2-3 business days to appear in your account, especially first-time backpay. ESD has additional verification steps for payments over certain thresholds (I believe around $5000). This is normal and helps prevent fraud. If it's not in your account by Monday afternoon, then you should contact ESD. Make sure you check your payment method in your ESD portal to verify the correct account is listed.

Appreciate the detailed explanation. I didn't realize larger amounts had different processing times. Just checked my payment method and the account info is correct, so I'll wait until Monday afternoon before getting too concerned.

Does anybody know if this is the same for ReliaCard? My backpay is supposed to go there instead of direct deposit

ReliaCard deposits for large backpay amounts can actually take 3-5 business days. The card issuer has their own verification process on top of ESD's. You can check the ReliaCard app or website for pending deposits that might not be available yet.

When this happened to me last year, I panicked and spent HOURS trying to reach ESD to make sure nothing was wrong. Literally called 40+ times over 2 days and couldn't get through. I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get connected with an agent within 30 minutes. They have this video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. The agent told me exactly what others here said - big backpay amounts take longer to process, and mine showed up on day 4. Might be worth keeping as a backup if you don't see the money by Tuesday.

Thanks for the resource! I'll definitely keep that in mind if I need to reach someone. After seeing everyone's responses, I'm less worried now, but good to have options if I need to actually speak with ESD.

They actually do mention this in the ESD handbook, but it's buried in the fine print on page 22. Says something like 'larger payments may require additional processing time' but doesn't give specific timeframes. Really unhelpful, especially when people are counting on that money to catch up on bills.

One important thing to check - did you receive an email confirmation that the payment was processed? ESD sometimes shows 'paid' status in the portal a day before they actually initiate the ACH transfer to your bank. If you didn't get an email confirmation yet, that might explain the delay. Also, check if your banking information has been verified in the system - sometimes they require additional verification for large deposits and won't tell you about it until you call. If it still doesn't show up by Tuesday, don't wait any longer. Contact them immediately as there could be a hold on your account that only an agent can resolve.

I did get an email confirmation yesterday saying payment was processed, so that part seems okay. Good point about the verification though - I've never received a payment this large from them before, so maybe there's some additional step I'm not aware of. If nothing shows by Tuesday, I'll definitely contact them.

anyone else notice how the system ALWAYS has issues with backpay but regular payments go through fine?? makes me think they do this on purpose to hold onto our money longer 🙄

It's actually due to federal banking regulations and fraud prevention measures. Large transactions trigger additional verification steps through the Automated Clearing House (ACH) system, not just at ESD. This happens with all government payments over certain thresholds, including tax refunds.

Just checked all folders including spam - no emails indicating any problems. Just the one confirming the payment was processed. Guess I just need to be patient!

Update us when it arrives! Always helpful to know how long these things actually take. Based on what I've seen in this forum over the past few months, 3-4 business days seems to be the average for backpay amounts over $5000.

I'll definitely post an update once it comes through! Thanks everyone for the reassurance - feeling much better about the situation now.
