ESD back payments after approval - when will I see my money?

After weeks of checking my ESD portal daily and making about 30 failed call attempts, I FINALLY got approved for unemployment benefits yesterday (March 1st)! What a relief. I initially filed on February 5th and have been filing my weekly claims this whole time while waiting for a decision. My question is - does anyone know how long it typically takes to receive the back payments for those weeks I claimed while waiting for approval? My account shows 'paid' status for those weeks now, but nothing has hit my bank account yet. My rent is already 3 days late and I'm starting to get nervous...

congrats on getting approved!! it took exactly 4 business days for mine to show up after my status changed to paid last month. so if it switched yesterday you might not see it til like wednesday or thursday. did you setup direct deposit or the debit card thing?

Thanks for the info! I set up direct deposit when I first applied. 4 days actually isn't too bad - I was worried it might take weeks more. I'll just have to explain to my landlord...again.

The back payments should arrive in 3-5 business days after the 'paid' status appears in your ESD account. Weekends don't count as business days, so if your status changed to paid on March 1st, expect deposits between March 6-8. If you chose direct deposit, funds usually arrive faster than the debit card option. Make sure your banking information is correct in your ESD portal - even a small typo can cause delays. If you don't receive payment by March 9th, then you should contact ESD to verify there's no hold on your payments. Sometimes they need additional verification even after approval.

Do they send all the back payments at once or weekly? I'm in a similar situation but waiting on 6 weeks of payments and wondering if I'll get one big deposit or separate ones.

In my experience waiting on backpayments is THE WORST part of the whole process!! You think once youre approved everything will be smooth sailing but nooooo. I was approved in January after 5 weeks of waiting and it took another 8 days for my money to show up. ESD is seriously the most disorganized agency ive ever dealt with. Good luck!!

8 days?! Ugh that's so frustrating. I was really hoping it would be faster since my bills are piling up. Did you try calling them during that 8-day period or just wait it out?

To answer the question about multiple back payments - they usually deposit all back payments at once as a lump sum. Each week will show as a separate line item in your ESD payment history, but they typically hit your bank account as a single deposit. This can sometimes cause confusion with your bank if it's a large amount, so don't be alarmed if there's a brief hold.

That makes sense, thanks! I was getting confused looking at my payment history vs what to expect in my bank account.

When my claim got approved in January I waited 2 weeks and STILL didn't get my backpay. I called ESD like 50 times and couldn't get through. Then I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an ESD agent in about 20 minutes. The agent told me there was a verification flag on my account that was holding up my payments even though I was approved! Would have NEVER known if I hadn't gotten through. They fixed it right away and I got paid 2 days later. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3

I've never heard of that service before. I might give it a shot if I don't see anything by next week. At this point I'm desperate enough to try anything to get this resolved quickly.

Just a friendly reminder that ESD processes payments Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. So since you were approved on March 1st (which was a Friday), the payment processing likely didn't start until Monday, March 4th. Direct deposits typically take 2-3 business days after processing begins. And yes, as others mentioned, back payments generally arrive as one lump sum. Check both your ESD account payment history AND your bank account regularly. Sometimes the ESD portal will update before the money arrives.

I hate that their system is basically stuck in the 1990s. Why can't they do instant transfers like literally everyone else these days?? I get paid instantly from my side gigs but the government takes a week 🙄

UPDATE: My back payments just hit my account! It took exactly 4 business days after approval. Total relief! Thanks everyone for your help and advice. For anyone else in the same situation - hang in there, the money does come through eventually.
