Does Memorial Day affect Washington ESD unemployment weekly claims filing?

I'm supposed to file my weekly claim this Monday but it's Memorial Day. Will Washington ESD's system be down? Do I need to file on Tuesday instead or can I still submit on the holiday? I don't want to mess up my claim by filing late but also don't want to waste time trying to access a system that's offline. Anyone know how federal holidays affect the weekly filing schedule?

The online system stays active 24/7 even on holidays. You can still file your weekly claim on Memorial Day through the Washington ESD website. The automated system doesn't shut down for federal holidays.

Thanks! So I don't need to worry about the holiday affecting my filing window?

0 coins

Correct, your filing window remains the same regardless of holidays.

i always file mine on sunday nights anyway so never had this problem lol but good to know the system works on holidays

0 coins

Smart! I should probably start doing that instead of waiting until the last minute.

0 coins

yeah it's way less stressful and you don't have to worry about technical issues on deadline day

However, if you need to speak with an actual Washington ESD representative about your claim, their phone lines will be closed on Memorial Day. The customer service hours are Monday-Friday 8am-4pm, excluding federal holidays. So if you have issues with your weekly claim that require human assistance, you'll need to wait until Tuesday.

Good point. I've been trying to reach them about an adjudication issue anyway. Guess I'll have to wait until Tuesday.

Ugh trying to get through to Washington ESD is nearly impossible even on regular business days. I've been calling for weeks about my claim being stuck in adjudication and can never get through.

If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone, you might want to try Claimyr at claimyr.com. They help people get through to unemployment agents when the lines are constantly busy. I used them last month when my claim was in adjudication limbo and finally got answers. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

Never heard of that service before. Does it actually work or is it just another scam?

0 coins

It's legit. They basically handle the calling process for you so you don't have to sit on hold for hours or keep getting disconnected. Worth trying if you're stuck like I was.

Just remember that even though you can file on the holiday, your payment processing might be delayed by a day since banks are closed on Memorial Day. So if you normally get your deposit on Tuesday, it might not show up until Wednesday.

0 coins

Oh that's a good point I hadn't thought about. Thanks for the heads up!

0 coins

Yeah bank holidays definitely affect when you actually see the money even if Washington ESD processes everything normally

0 coins

I work in banking and can confirm what the previous poster said. ACH transfers (which is how unemployment payments are sent) don't process on federal holidays. So while Washington ESD might approve your payment on Memorial Day, your bank won't receive it until the next business day.

0 coins

This is why I always file early in the week instead of waiting until Sunday night

0 coins

That's smart planning. Filing early gives you a buffer for any holiday delays or technical issues.

0 coins

does this affect the debit card payments too or just direct deposit?

0 coins

The debit cards are loaded through the same ACH system so yes, holiday delays affect both payment methods equally.

Quick question - if I file my weekly claim on Memorial Day but then realize I made an error, can I call Washington ESD on Tuesday to fix it or do I have to wait for the next filing period?

0 coins

Mei Lin

You can call to report the error as soon as their lines open on Tuesday. They can make corrections to recently filed claims if you catch the mistake quickly.

0 coins

Thanks! I always worry I'm going to accidentally report my work hours wrong and mess up my whole claim.

0 coins

I did that once and they were able to fix it the next day. Just make sure you call first thing Tuesday morning since it gets harder to reach them as the day goes on.

Actually had to deal with this during Labor Day weekend last year. Filed my claim on the Monday holiday no problem, but my payment was delayed by one day like others mentioned. The Washington ESD system handled everything fine, just the banking side that caused the delay.

0 coins

Good to hear from someone who's actually been through this situation. Was there any other issues you ran into?

0 coins

Nope, just the payment delay. Everything else processed normally. The key is just knowing to expect the extra day for your deposit.

0 coins

For what it's worth, I've been on unemployment for six months now and I've filed on every holiday that's come up. Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's Day, Presidents Day - the system always works fine. It's really just the human customer service that shuts down on holidays.

0 coins

That's reassuring! I was worried there might be some technical maintenance or something on holidays.

0 coins

Nah, they keep the filing system running 24/7. Makes sense since people depend on those payments to survive.

0 coins

Exactly. They can't shut down the system just because it's a holiday. Too many people would miss their filing windows.

One more thing to consider - if you're job searching and have interviews scheduled, some employers might be closed on Memorial Day too. So if you were planning to contact potential employers as part of your job search log, you might need to adjust your schedule.

0 coins

Good point about the job search requirements. I always forget that those are tied to the weekly claims.

0 coins

Yeah, Washington ESD requires you to be actively seeking work, so holidays can affect your ability to complete those activities.

0 coins

Can you count applying online on holidays toward your job search requirements? Or does it have to be during business hours?

0 coins

Online applications count regardless of when you submit them. It's the phone calls and in-person visits that are limited by business hours.

Been filing weekly claims for almost a year now and holidays have never been an issue for the actual filing. The only time I've had problems is when I needed to speak to someone at Washington ESD and they were closed. That's when I found out about services like Claimyr that help you get through to agents when you can't reach them normally.

0 coins

How does that Claimyr thing work exactly? I've been trying to reach Washington ESD for three weeks about my claim status.

0 coins

They basically call Washington ESD for you and get you connected to an actual person. Saves you from sitting on hold for hours or getting hung up on. Check out their demo video to see how it works.

0 coins

Is there a cost for that service? Seems too good to be true.

0 coins

There is a fee but it was worth it for me since I couldn't get through any other way. Much cheaper than missing work to sit on hold all day.

0 coins

Just to add one more perspective - I work for a company that processes government payments and Memorial Day definitely affects the banking side but not the government systems themselves. Washington ESD can approve your payment on the holiday, but your bank won't process the deposit until Tuesday at the earliest.

0 coins

So basically file as normal but expect the money a day later than usual?

0 coins

Exactly. The unemployment system works fine, just the final step of getting money into your account gets delayed by the holiday.

This is really helpful info. I wish Washington ESD made this clearer on their website.

PSA for anyone reading this thread: if you're going to be traveling over Memorial Day weekend, make sure you're still in Washington state when you file your weekly claim. Being out of state can complicate your unemployment eligibility.

0 coins

Wait, you can't travel while on unemployment? That seems crazy.

0 coins

You can travel, but you have to report it and you need to still be available for work. If you're vacationing somewhere and not available for interviews, that could affect your claim.

0 coins

The rules about travel and unemployment are so confusing. I've been afraid to leave the state at all since I started claiming.

0 coins

Mei Lin

You can travel for job interviews, family emergencies, or short trips where you remain available for work. It's extended vacations where you're not job searching that cause issues.

0 coins

Bottom line from all these responses: Memorial Day won't stop you from filing your weekly claim, but it might delay your payment by a day and you won't be able to reach customer service if you have issues. Plan accordingly and file early if you're worried about any complications.

0 coins

Perfect summary! Thanks everyone for all the helpful info. I feel much better about filing on Monday now.

This thread should be pinned somewhere. Really useful information that I bet lots of people wonder about during holiday weekends.

0 coins

Agreed! Every holiday weekend someone asks this same question. Now we have a comprehensive answer.
