Why is Washington ESD unemployment office closed today - can't file weekly claim
I went to file my weekly claim this morning and the Washington ESD website keeps giving me error messages. Then I tried calling and got a recording saying offices are closed. Is there some holiday I don't know about? I'm worried about missing my filing deadline and losing benefits. Does anyone know what's going on with Washington ESD today?

Check if it's a federal holiday - Washington ESD follows the federal holiday schedule. Martin Luther King Jr Day, Presidents Day, stuff like that. They're usually closed and the online system goes down for maintenance too.

•I didn't think about federal holidays affecting the online system. Thanks for the heads up!

•yeah the whole system goes dark on federal holidays, learned that the hard way

Washington ESD offices are closed on all federal holidays and some state holidays. The online claim filing system is also unavailable during these times. Don't worry about missing your deadline - if the system is down due to a holiday, your filing window automatically extends to the next business day.

•Oh that's a relief! I was panicking about losing my benefits. So I can file tomorrow without any penalty?

•Exactly, the deadline shifts automatically when Washington ESD systems are down for holidays or maintenance.

I've been dealing with Washington ESD for months and getting through to them on regular days is already impossible. When I really needed to speak to someone about my adjudication status, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually gets you connected to Washington ESD agents. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

•How does that work exactly? Do they just call for you or something?

•They handle the calling process and get you connected when an agent is available. Way better than sitting on hold for hours or getting disconnected.

ugh this happened to me last month on memorial day, spent like 2 hours trying to figure out why nothing was working

•Same! I wish they put up a better notice on the homepage when they're closed for holidays.

For future reference, Washington ESD is closed on: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. They also close early on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.

•Don't forget Columbus Day and some other random ones they add

Dmitry Volkov
•Actually, Washington ESD doesn't typically close for Columbus Day. Stick to the major federal holidays I listed.

The system also goes down for maintenance sometimes on sundays, not just holidays. super annoying when you forget

•Good to know! Do they announce maintenance ahead of time?

Dylan Cooper
•They're supposed to but sometimes they don't give much notice. Best to file early in the week if possible.

I HATE when this happens!!! Like give us some warning or something. Put a big banner on the website saying CLOSED FOR HOLIDAY. Is that so hard???

•right?? their website design is from like 2005 anyway

•There usually is a notice, but it's not very prominent. Check the news section on the Washington ESD homepage.

Quick question - if I can't file today because of the holiday, will my payment be delayed too?
0 coins
Dmitry Volkov
•Your payment might be delayed by a day since processing happens on business days only. But you won't lose any money as long as you file within the extended deadline.

•Thanks, that makes sense. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to miss rent money.

This whole system is so outdated. Other states let you file 24/7 even on holidays but Washington ESD shuts everything down

•yeah it's pretty behind compared to other places I've lived

•To be fair, they've improved a lot since the pandemic. The old system was way worse.

I remember when I first started claiming benefits I missed a whole week because I didn't know about the holiday closures. Nobody tells you this stuff!

Fatima Al-Qasimi
•That's exactly what I was worried about! Did you get in trouble for missing the week?
0 coins
Yara Sayegh
•No, I was able to explain it was due to the holiday closure and they backdated it. But it was stressful.

Pro tip: if you ever need to reach Washington ESD on a holiday for something urgent, some people have had luck with that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. They might still be able to help even when regular offices are closed.

•Yeah, Claimyr worked for me even during busy times when I couldn't get through normally. Worth checking out their site.

Wait, so if today is a holiday, does that mean everyone filing today gets an extra day? That seems unfair to people who filed earlier in the week.
0 coins
Dmitry Volkov
•It's not unfair - everyone gets the same filing window. If the system is down due to holidays, the deadline extends for everyone affected. It's about maintaining access, not giving advantages.

•Oh okay, that makes more sense when you put it that way.

•It gets easier once you get into a routine. I always file on Tuesday mornings to avoid any weekend issues.

For anyone still worried about deadlines, you can usually file late claims if you have a good reason like system outages or holidays. Just be prepared to explain why you filed late.

Connor Murphy
•How late can you file before it becomes a problem?
0 coins
Paolo Conti
•Usually a few days to a week, but it's better to file as soon as the system comes back up. Don't push it.

Does anyone know if WorkSource offices are also closed on the same holidays? I was supposed to do my job search appointment today.
0 coins
Dmitry Volkov
•Yes, WorkSource follows the same federal holiday schedule as Washington ESD. Your appointment will be rescheduled automatically.

•Perfect, thanks for confirming that!

I wish Washington ESD would send text alerts about closures. My old state did that and it was super helpful.

Sofia Ramirez
•you can sign up for email alerts on their website but they don't always send them

•I'll look into that, thanks!

Just a heads up for everyone - if you're in adjudication like I was, holidays can make that process even longer. When I needed to get status updates during a closure, Claimyr helped me connect with someone who could check my case.

•That's good to know. I'm not in adjudication but I'll keep that in mind for the future.

Next time this happens, check the Washington ESD Twitter account. They usually post about closures there.

•And remember that Claimyr option if you ever need to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD. Made a huge difference for me.
