The waiting week was eliminated in Washington so you should get paid for your first week of unemployment as long as you file on time. Don't wait to file your claim!
if your claim gets stuck in adjudication like mine did, you might want to try calling. I waited 6 weeks before I finally got through to someone who could help. Turned out they just needed one more piece of documentation.
they wanted a letter from my employer confirming my separation date and reason. something that should have been routine but got flagged for manual review
This is another situation where Claimyr could help - getting through to ask about missing documentation instead of waiting weeks for a callback.
Just want to confirm what others have said - unemployment benefits are definitely taxable income. I learned this in accounting class years ago but forgot until I had to file taxes after being unemployed. The 1099-G form makes it clear how much you received and you have to report it as income.
This thread has been super helpful! I had no idea about the tax implications when I started collecting. Going to log into my Washington ESD account right now and set up tax withholding. Better late than never!
Update: I tried that Claimyr thing and actually got through to Washington ESD today! Finally got my adjudication issue resolved. Sometimes you just need to talk to a real person.
Does anyone know if you can get DUA if you were already receiving regular unemployment when the disaster hit? My UI claim was ongoing when the flood happened and now I can't get back to work search because everything's closed.
You can't get both at the same time, but you might be able to switch from regular UI to DUA if it would be more beneficial. Talk to Washington ESD about your specific situation.
Thanks, I'll call them. Or try that Claimyr thing if I can't get through the regular way.
The weekly amount calculation is: (highest quarter wages ÷ 25) + $15 for dependents if applicable. Same formula as regular UI. Min $295, max $999 for 2025 in Washington.

One thing that helped me was understanding that the 26 weeks includes any partial weeks. So if you work a few hours one week and still claim benefits, that counts as one of your 26 weeks even though you only got partial payment.

•That's good to know. I was wondering if partial weeks counted differently.

•Nope, any week you receive benefits counts toward your 26 week total. Something to keep in mind when taking temporary or part-time work.

been collecting for 24 weeks now and found a job that starts next month. glad I didn't have to use all 26 weeks but worried about what would have happened if I hadn't found anything

•Congrats on finding work! That's cutting it close with only 2 weeks left on your claim.
