What's the Washington ESD disaster unemployment assistance payment amount for 2025?
My area just got declared a federal disaster zone after the recent flooding and I'm trying to figure out if I should apply for disaster unemployment assistance through Washington ESD. My regular job is temporarily shut down because of flood damage to the building. Does anyone know what the weekly benefit amount is for DUA in Washington? I've been looking on the ESD website but can't find clear info about how much it actually pays compared to regular UI benefits.

DUA payment amounts in Washington are calculated the same way as regular unemployment benefits - it's based on your wages from the base period. The weekly benefit amount ranges from $295 minimum to $999 maximum for 2025. You'll get the same amount you would qualify for under regular UI.

•Thanks! So if I was making about $4200 a month before the disaster, what would that work out to roughly?

•With that income level you'd probably qualify for somewhere around $650-700 per week, but Washington ESD will calculate the exact amount based on your highest quarter earnings during the base period.

the main difference with DUA is you can get it even if you dont qualify for regular unemployment like if youre self employed or dont have enough work history. same payment formula though

•Wait really? I'm a freelance contractor and thought I couldn't get any unemployment benefits at all. How do I apply for this disaster thing?

•yeah you have to apply through washington esd within 30 days of the disaster declaration. they have a separate application process for DUA

I applied for DUA after the windstorm last year and it was a nightmare trying to get through to Washington ESD to check on my application status. Spent hours on hold every day for weeks. Finally found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an actual agent - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me so much time and frustration.

•How does that work exactly? I'm already dreading having to call Washington ESD about this.

•It's on claimyr.com - basically they handle the calling and waiting for you, then connect you when they get an agent on the line. Way better than sitting on hold all day.

•Sounds too good to be true. What's the catch with this service?

Just wanted to mention that DUA has different eligibility requirements than regular UI. You have to prove that your unemployment is directly related to the disaster, and you have to apply within the deadline. Don't wait around thinking about it if you qualify.

•Good point. My workplace is literally flooded so I think that counts as directly related. When's the deadline usually?

•It's 30 days from when the disaster declaration was made, not from when your job was affected. Check the FEMA website for your county's declaration date.

I'm in the same boat - my restaurant got flooded and we're closed indefinitely. Been trying to call Washington ESD for three days straight and keep getting busy signals or disconnected after waiting an hour. This is ridiculous!

•Seriously try that Claimyr thing I mentioned. I was skeptical at first but it really works. Got through to an ESD agent in like 20 minutes instead of wasting my whole day calling.

•I'll check it out, thanks. At this point I'm willing to try anything to avoid sitting on hold all day again.

One thing people don't realize about DUA is that you can't collect it at the same time as regular unemployment benefits. It's one or the other, not both. Also the maximum duration is usually shorter than regular UI.

Grace Patel
•How much shorter? I thought unemployment was up to 26 weeks normally.

•DUA is typically up to 26 weeks too, but it can vary depending on the specific disaster declaration. Some are shorter.

•Actually for major disasters it's usually the full 26 weeks, same as regular UI. The duration depends on the type of disaster declaration.

btw you still have to do the job search requirements with DUA just like regular unemployment. dont forget about that part

•Wait what? How am I supposed to look for work when half the businesses in town are closed because of flood damage?

Isabella Russo
•yeah its stupid but thats the rule. you have to apply to jobs outside the disaster area or jobs that werent affected

•Actually, job search requirements are often waived or modified for DUA recipients in major disaster areas. Check with Washington ESD about your specific situation.

The payment amounts are the same as regular UI but here's what people don't tell you - it takes FOREVER to get approved and start receiving payments. I waited almost 2 months after the hurricane last year.

•Two months?! I can't wait that long to pay my bills. Is there anything I can do to speed it up?

•Make sure you have all your documentation ready when you apply - proof of employment, proof that the disaster affected your work, tax records if you're self-employed. Missing paperwork slows everything down.

I looked into that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Seems legit - they have good reviews and the video demo explains exactly how it works. Might be worth it if you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD.

•I actually tried it yesterday and got connected to an ESD agent in about 15 minutes. Way better than the hours I spent on hold before.

•That's encouraging. I'm definitely going to need to talk to someone at ESD about my DUA application.

Just a heads up that DUA is a federal program administered by the state, so the rules can be different from regular state unemployment. Don't assume everything works exactly the same way.

•Good point. The application process is definitely different, and they ask for different types of documentation to prove disaster-related unemployment.

Does anyone know if you can get DUA if you were already receiving regular unemployment when the disaster hit? My UI claim was ongoing when the flood happened and now I can't get back to work search because everything's closed.

•You can't get both at the same time, but you might be able to switch from regular UI to DUA if it would be more beneficial. Talk to Washington ESD about your specific situation.

•Thanks, I'll call them. Or try that Claimyr thing if I can't get through the regular way.

The weekly amount calculation is: (highest quarter wages ÷ 25) + $15 for dependents if applicable. Same formula as regular UI. Min $295, max $999 for 2025 in Washington.

Grace Patel
•That's really helpful, thanks! So if my highest quarter was around $12,600, I'd get about $504 per week?

Ryan Kim
•Yes, that math looks right. Plus any dependent allowance if you have qualifying dependents.
