Washington ESD unemployment benefit amounts - how much is unemployment paying right now?
I'm looking at filing for unemployment and trying to figure out my budget. Does anyone know what the current weekly benefit amounts are for Washington ESD? I've been working part-time for the last year making about $28,000 annually. I'm seeing different numbers online and the Washington ESD website calculator isn't working for me. Just want to know what I should expect if my claim gets approved.

The maximum weekly benefit amount in Washington is $999 per week as of 2025. Your actual amount depends on your earnings over the past year. Washington ESD calculates it based on your highest quarter of earnings. With $28k annually, you're probably looking at somewhere between $400-600 per week, but that's just a rough estimate.

•Thanks! That's higher than I expected. Do you know if that includes the extra federal money or is that just the state amount?

•That's just the regular state UI benefit. There aren't any federal add-ons right now like there were during COVID.

i think the minimum is like $295 or something and max is $999 but most people get somewhere in the middle depending on what they made. you can try calling washington esd to ask but good luck getting through lol

•Yeah I've been trying to call all week and keep getting the busy signal. Is there another way to find out?

•I had the same problem trying to reach Washington ESD about my benefit calculation. Kept getting disconnected after waiting on hold for 2+ hours. Found this service called Claimyr that actually got me through to an agent in about 20 minutes. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Might be worth checking out if you need to talk to someone directly.

Your weekly benefit amount is calculated using your base period earnings. Washington ESD looks at the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you filed. They take your highest earning quarter and divide by 26. Then they average your two highest quarters and take 3.85% of that amount. Your weekly benefit is whichever calculation gives you the higher amount, up to the maximum of $999.

•That's really helpful but also confusing. Is there a simpler way to estimate it?

•Quick rule of thumb: take your gross annual income, divide by 26, then multiply by 0.6. That'll give you a ballpark figure. So for $28k annually, that's about $645 per week, but could be higher or lower depending on when you earned that money.

•Wait that doesn't seem right. I made $35k last year and only get $423 per week.

The amounts change every year based on the state's average wage. 2025 rates are definitely higher than last year. I think the minimum went up from $295 to $316 and the max from $999 to... well it's still $999 but the calculation changed slightly.

•You're right about the minimum increasing. The maximum has been $999 for a while now but fewer people actually hit that ceiling.

NOBODY TELLS YOU ABOUT THE TAXES!! Whatever amount you get, remember that unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can have taxes withheld automatically or you'll owe it all at tax time. I learned this the hard way and ended up owing $1,800 last year.

•Oh wow, I didn't think about taxes. How much do they typically withhold?

•Federal is 10% and Washington doesn't have state income tax. But seriously, elect to have it withheld or you'll be sorry come April.

•This is good advice. I always forget unemployment is taxable until I get the 1099-G form.

The benefit calculator on Washington ESD's website has been broken for months. I've been trying to use it to figure out my potential benefits and it just gives error messages. Really frustrating when you're trying to plan your finances.

•Same here! I thought it was just my browser but apparently it's a known issue.

•This is exactly why I ended up using Claimyr to get through to an actual person at Washington ESD. The online tools are unreliable and calling directly is impossible. At least with Claimyr I could get real answers about my specific situation.

Remember that your benefit amount also determines how much you can earn from part-time work without losing benefits. In Washington, you can earn up to 25% of your weekly benefit amount before they start reducing your unemployment payment. So if you get $500/week, you can earn up to $125 without any reduction.

•That's really useful information. I was wondering about taking on some gig work while unemployed.

•Just make sure you report all earnings when you file your weekly claims. Washington ESD will find out eventually and overpayments are a nightmare to deal with.

been on unemployment for 2 months now getting $445 per week. its not much but better than nothing. make sure you apply asap because theres a waiting week before you get paid

•Wait, there's still a waiting week? I thought they got rid of that.

•nope still there. first week you file you dont get paid for that week even if approved

If you're really struggling to get information from Washington ESD, I'd suggest trying Claimyr. I was skeptical at first but they actually got me connected to an agent who explained exactly how my benefits were calculated. Made the whole process way less stressful. The demo video on their site shows exactly how it works.

•How much does that cost though? I'm already broke which is why I need unemployment.

•It's definitely worth it if you need answers quickly. Way better than spending days trying to get through on your own.

One thing people don't realize is that if you quit your job, you probably won't qualify for unemployment benefits at all. Washington ESD requires you to be laid off or fired for reasons not related to misconduct. So the benefit amount doesn't matter if you can't get approved in the first place.

•I was laid off due to company restructuring so I should be okay on that front.

•Good, that should qualify. Just make sure you have documentation from your employer about the layoff.

The whole system is so complicated. I've been trying to figure out my benefits for weeks and every website gives different information. Wish Washington ESD would just have a simple calculator that actually works.

•Tell me about it. I ended up just filing and seeing what happened. Got approved for $389 per week which was close to what I expected.

•That's probably the best approach. The estimates are just estimates anyway.
