How much is unemployment weekly benefit amount in Washington state 2025?
I'm trying to figure out how much my weekly unemployment benefit will be if I file a claim with Washington ESD. I've been working for about 2 years making around $52,000 annually. Does anyone know the current formula they use or what the maximum weekly amount is? I heard it changed recently but can't find clear info on their website.

Washington ESD calculates your weekly benefit amount based on your highest earning quarter during your base period. The maximum weekly benefit for 2025 is $999 per week. They take your highest quarter earnings, divide by 26, then multiply by 0.0385 to get your weekly amount.

•Thanks! So if my highest quarter was around $13,500, that would be about $520 per week?

•That sounds right. You can also use the benefit calculator on the Washington ESD website to get an exact estimate before filing your claim.

the max went up this year i think its like $999 now but most people dont get the max unless they were making good money

•Yeah the maximum is tied to the state average wage. You'd need to be making around $67,000+ annually to qualify for the full $999 weekly benefit.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to verify your benefit amount, I found this service called Claimyr that helps you get connected to actual agents. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Really helpful when you need to talk to someone about your specific situation.

•Interesting, I'll check that out. Getting through their phone system is always a nightmare.

•I used Claimyr last month when I had questions about my benefit calculation. Saved me hours of calling and getting busy signals.

Keep in mind you also have to meet the minimum earnings requirement. You need at least $5,265 in covered wages during your base period to qualify at all. And your benefit amount can't exceed 3.85% of your total base period wages.

•Good to know about the minimum. I should be well above that threshold.

•what if you worked part time? does that change anything?

•Part-time work still counts toward your base period wages. Washington ESD looks at all covered employment regardless of whether it was full or part-time.

Don't forget about taxes! Your unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can have federal taxes withheld at 10% and state taxes aren't withheld automatically, so you might owe at tax time.

•Oh wow, I didn't think about taxes. So if I get $520 per week, I should probably have them withhold taxes?

Yuki Tanaka
•I'd recommend it, especially if you're in a higher tax bracket. You can request withholding when you file your weekly claims.

The Washington ESD website has a benefit calculator but it's been glitchy lately. Sometimes it gives you an error when you try to estimate your benefits.

•Yeah I've had issues with their online tools too. Usually works better if you clear your browser cache first.

also remember you can only collect benefits for 26 weeks max unless theres some kind of extension program running

•26 weeks should hopefully be enough time to find something new. Thanks for the reminder!

I'm getting $743 per week right now. Was making about $58k before I got laid off in December. The amount seems fair based on what I was earning.

•That's helpful to know! Did you have any issues with your claim or did it go through smoothly?

•It took about 2 weeks to get approved, but no major issues. Just had to verify my identity online.

One thing to watch out for - if you have any other income like freelance work or pension payments, that can reduce your weekly benefit amount. Washington ESD has specific rules about how they calculate deductions.

•Good point. I don't have any other income right now but I'll keep that in mind if I pick up any side work.

Why is Washington ESD so complicated with their calculations? Every state seems to do it differently and their website explanations are confusing.

•Each state sets their own unemployment insurance rules. Washington actually has pretty generous benefits compared to most states.

•I guess that's true. At least we don't have a waiting week like some states do.

If you need to speak with someone at Washington ESD about your specific benefit calculation, definitely try Claimyr. I was getting frustrated trying to call them directly and this service got me through to an agent in minutes instead of hours.

•That's the second recommendation for Claimyr. Might be worth trying if I run into issues.

Your benefit amount also depends on which quarter they use as your base period. If you just started working recently, you might want to wait to file so you have higher earnings in your base period.

•I've been working steadily for 2 years so my base period should be pretty consistent.

•Yeah you should be fine then. They'll use your four highest quarters of earnings.

does anyone know if overtime pay counts toward your benefit calculation?
0 coins
Aisha Abdullah
•Yes, overtime is included in your covered wages. Washington ESD looks at your total gross wages from all sources.

•awesome, i worked a ton of OT last year so that should help my benefit amount

The weekly benefit amount is just the starting point. You also need to factor in the job search requirements and weekly claim filing. Miss a week and you lose that week's benefits permanently.

GalaxyGuardian
•Thanks for the reminder about filing weekly. I know you have to do job searches too - is it still 3 per week?
0 coins
Fatima Al-Maktoum
•Yes, minimum 3 job search activities per week and you have to keep detailed records in WorkSourceWA.

I tried calling Washington ESD last week to ask about benefit amounts and stayed on hold for 3 hours before giving up. Their phone system is absolutely terrible.

•That's exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier. Gets you past all that hold time and connects you directly to agents who can answer your questions.

•I'll definitely check that out. Three hours on hold is ridiculous.

Just remember that your first payment might be delayed if there are any issues with your claim. I had to wait an extra week because of some verification requirements.

•What kind of verification did they need? I want to make sure I have everything ready.

•They wanted me to verify my identity through ID.me and confirm my last employer. Pretty standard stuff but it added time.

The benefit calculator on Washington ESD's site gave me an estimate that was pretty close to what I actually received. Worth trying even if it's sometimes glitchy.

•I'll give it a try. Hopefully it works better now than when others were having issues.

Make sure you understand the difference between your weekly benefit amount and your maximum benefit amount. The weekly is what you get each week, but there's also a total maximum for the entire benefit year.
0 coins
GalaxyGuardian
•What's the maximum total amount you can receive?
0 coins
StarSurfer
•It's 26 times your weekly benefit amount, so if you get $520 per week, your maximum total would be $13,520.
