Washington ESD unemployment weekly benefit amount - how much can I get in 2025?

I'm trying to figure out what my weekly unemployment benefit would be if I file a claim with Washington ESD. I've been working full-time making about $52,000 a year and wondering what the maximum weekly benefit amount is in Washington state right now. Does anyone know the current rates for 2025? Also curious about how they calculate it based on your previous wages.

Washington ESD calculates your weekly benefit amount based on your highest quarter of earnings in your base period. The maximum weekly benefit amount for 2025 is $999 per week. They take your highest quarter wages, divide by 26, then calculate about 3.85% of your average weekly wage during that quarter.

Thanks! So if I made $13,000 in my highest quarter, that would be $500 per week average, so my UI benefit would be around $480 weekly?

0 coins

That sounds about right based on the formula. You can also use the benefit calculator on the Washington ESD website to get an exact estimate.

0 coins

The benefit amount also depends on your base period wages. If you haven't worked much in the past 15 months before filing, your benefit could be lower. Washington ESD looks at the first four of the last five completed quarters.

I've been working steadily for the past 2 years so that shouldn't be an issue for me.

0 coins

yeah the base period thing trips up a lot of people, especially if you just started a new job recently

I had trouble getting through to Washington ESD to ask about my benefit calculation when I filed last month. The phone lines are always busy and I kept getting disconnected. I ended up using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get connected to an actual agent who walked me through how my weekly amount was calculated. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

0 coins

How much does that service cost? I've been trying to reach Washington ESD for weeks about my claim.

0 coins

It was worth it to finally talk to someone who could explain the benefit calculation properly. Much easier than spending hours on hold.

0 coins

Never heard of that before but might try it if I can't get through the regular way

0 coins

Don't forget you can only collect unemployment benefits for 26 weeks in Washington state, unless there are extended benefits available. And you have to file your weekly claims every week to keep getting paid.

0 coins

Good point about the weekly claims. Do I have to do job searches every week too?

0 coins

Yes, you need to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log. Washington ESD can audit your job search activities.

0 coins

The Washington ESD benefit calculator gave me a different amount than what I actually got when my claim was approved. Turned out there was an issue with how they calculated my base period wages.

0 coins

What kind of issue? I want to make sure mine gets calculated correctly.

0 coins

They missed some wages from a previous employer. Had to send in paystubs to get it corrected. Took about 3 weeks to fix.

0 coins

That's why it's important to double-check your wage record when you file your initial claim.

0 coins

just filed mine last week and still waiting to hear back about my weekly benefit amount... this whole process takes forever

0 coins

How long have you been waiting? I'm worried about delays.

0 coins

about 10 days so far, they said it could take up to 3 weeks for the initial determination

0 coins

I'm really confused about this whole base period thing. What if I just started a new job 6 months ago but made way more money there than my previous job? Do they use the old lower wages or the new higher wages?

0 coins

It depends on when you file your claim. Washington ESD uses specific quarters for the base period calculation, not just your most recent wages.

0 coins

This is so confusing. Maybe I should call them to get it explained properly.

0 coins

That's exactly why I used Claimyr - trying to understand base period calculations over the phone with Washington ESD was impossible until I got connected to someone who had time to explain it.

0 coins

Also keep in mind that unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can choose to have taxes withheld or pay them when you file your tax return next year.

0 coins

Oh I didn't know that! Should I have taxes withheld or pay later?

0 coins

Depends on your situation. If you're going to owe a lot at tax time anyway, might be easier to have them withheld.

0 coins

i think the max went up this year compared to last year but not sure by how much

0 coins

Yes, the maximum weekly benefit amount is adjusted annually based on the state's average weekly wage.

0 coins

good to know thanks

0 coins

You also need to be able and available for work to keep collecting benefits. If you're not actively looking for work or can't accept a job offer, Washington ESD can disqualify you.

0 coins

What counts as actively looking for work? Just applying online or do I need to do more?

0 coins

You need at least 3 job search activities per week. Can be applications, networking, job fairs, interviews, etc. Keep detailed records.

0 coins

they can actually audit your job search log so don't just make stuff up

0 coins

Anyone know if working part-time affects your weekly benefit amount? I might be able to pick up some freelance work while collecting unemployment.

0 coins

Yes, if you earn more than 1/3 of your weekly benefit amount, Washington ESD will reduce your unemployment payment dollar for dollar above that threshold.

0 coins

So if my weekly benefit is $450, I can earn up to $150 without any reduction?

0 coins

Exactly. And you have to report all earnings when you file your weekly claim, even if it's just a few dollars.

0 coins

For anyone struggling to get through to Washington ESD about benefit calculations or claim issues, I really recommend checking out Claimyr. The agents they connect you with actually know the system and can explain things clearly. Saved me so much frustration.

0 coins

I might try that. Been on hold for 2 hours today and got disconnected again.

0 coins

same thing happened to me yesterday, so annoying

0 coins

Thanks everyone for all the helpful info! Sounds like I should be able to get around $480 per week based on my wages. Going to file my claim this week and see what happens.

0 coins

Good luck! Make sure you have all your employment information ready when you file online.

0 coins

And remember to file your weekly claims on time every week once you're approved.

0 coins

Will do, thanks again for all the advice!

0 coins

this thread was really helpful, i was wondering about the same thing

0 coins

Happy to help! The Washington ESD system can be confusing but once you understand how it works it's not too bad.

0 coins

One more question - what happens if Washington ESD makes a mistake calculating my benefit amount? Can I appeal that?

0 coins

Yes, you can appeal the monetary determination if you think your weekly benefit amount is wrong. You have 30 days from the date of the determination to file an appeal.

0 coins

Good to know, thanks. Hopefully it won't come to that but nice to have options.

0 coins

update - finally got my monetary determination and my weekly benefit is $425. took 2 weeks but at least it came through

0 coins

That's great! Was it close to what you expected based on your wages?

0 coins

yeah pretty close, maybe $20 less than i calculated but close enough

0 coins

Don't forget that if you have a pension or retirement income, that might affect your unemployment benefits too. Washington ESD will ask about any other income sources.

0 coins

I don't have any retirement income yet but good to know for the future.

0 coins

My dad had issues with this when he filed for unemployment. His small pension reduced his weekly benefit.

0 coins

Just want to mention again that if anyone needs to talk to Washington ESD about their specific situation, Claimyr really does work. I was skeptical at first but it's much better than trying to get through on your own.

0 coins

might give it a try if i have issues with my claim

0 coins

I'm definitely going to check out that video demo you mentioned earlier.

0 coins

Overall the Washington unemployment system isn't too bad once you figure out how it works. The key is understanding the benefit calculation and keeping up with your weekly claims and job search requirements.

0 coins

Agreed, this thread helped me understand it much better. Really appreciate everyone's input!

0 coins

Always happy to help people navigate the Washington ESD system. It can be overwhelming at first but gets easier.

0 coins

Good luck to everyone filing claims! Hope you all get approved quickly and without any issues.
