Just to add one more point - unemployment benefits are also taxable income, while Social Security benefits may or may not be taxable depending on your total income. Another difference between the programs.
Just want to add that if you do end up needing to appeal this or get more information, don't wait too long. Most deadlines with Washington ESD are pretty strict and they're not always flexible about extensions.
Thanks everyone for all the helpful advice! I'm going to try the online payment system first, and if that doesn't work I'll look into that Claimyr service to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD. Really appreciate all the different perspectives on this.
Also worth mentioning that Washington state doesn't tax unemployment benefits at the state level, but you'll still owe federal taxes on them.
If you're confused about any part of the process or your claim gets stuck somewhere, seriously consider using a service like Claimyr to get through to Washington ESD. I wasted weeks trying to call on my own before finding out about it.
Thanks for all the helpful information everyone! This has been really educational. I feel much more prepared now if I ever need to file for unemployment benefits.
Just to clarify something I saw mentioned earlier - you don't need to wait to file your claim, but you do need to have actually been separated from your job. So if you got notice but are still working, wait until your last day.

I went through this same thing 6 months ago. One tip - when you do your weekly claims, make sure you answer all the questions accurately and consistently. Any discrepancies can trigger reviews that slow things down.

•Yeah, and keep copies of everything you submit. I had to resubmit documents because they claimed they never received them the first time.

•The weekly claims are pretty straightforward though. Just answer honestly about any work you did and any income you received that week.

oh and if you have any issues with your claim or need to talk to someone, that claimyr thing actually works. I was skeptical at first but it got me through to an agent when I couldn't reach anyone for weeks

•I'll definitely keep that in mind if I run into any problems. Sounds like phone access is a real issue.

•The phone lines are definitely overloaded. Having a service that can get you through automatically is really valuable when you have time-sensitive issues.
