TWC randomly calling to verify identity - legit or scam?
Has anyone else gotten calls from TWC saying they need to verify your identity AGAIN even though you already did the ID.me thing? I got a weird message yesterday saying they need to confirm my identity because of some new law, but they didn't leave a callback number. When I tried calling the number they called from, it just says "this number is for outbound calls only." Feels super sketchy but maybe it's legit? I'm worried it might be fraud but also don't want to ignore TWC if they really need something from me. Anyone know what's going on with these identity verification calls?

Yep got the same thing last week. its legit. TWC started doing more identity checks because of all the fraud during covid. they'll call back from a different number.

This is part of the new verification procedures TWC implemented in 2025. After the massive fraud cases in the past years, Texas passed legislation requiring periodic identity verification even for claimants who already completed ID.me. The calls are legitimate, but you should NEVER provide your full social security number or banking information over the phone. When they call back, they should only ask you to confirm information you previously provided, like your employment history or the date you filed your claim.

I went through this last month and it was a NIGHTMARE!!!! They called me 3 times from different numbers, I missed 2 calls because they came at weird times, then they froze my benefits without telling me! When I finally reached someone, they said my account was flagged for "additional verification" and I had to upload MORE documents even after doing ID.me. The whole process took almost 3 weeks and I missed 2 payments. The TWC system is BROKEN!!!!

•Yeah I got backpay EVENTUALLY but had to call like 20 times. Their system is designed to make people give up. When you finally talk to someone they act like they're doing you a favor by giving you YOUR OWN MONEY!!!

I think its becuz of that new Senate Bill 1803 thing they passed. My cousin works for the state (not TWC tho) and said theyre doing random checks cuz of all the fake claims. They will call from a state number.

I had this same issue last month and couldn't get through on the regular line. I found this service called Claimyr that got me connected to an actual TWC agent in about 20 minutes. Saved me days of calling. They basically call TWC for you and when they get through, they connect you directly to the agent. I was skeptical but it worked. •I totally understand being cautious! They just needed my phone number so they could call me back when they got a TWC agent on the line. They don't ask for any of your claim details or personal info. The actual conversation with TWC is just between you and the TWC agent.

Update for everyone: I just confirmed with my TWC contact that these calls are part of their new Random Identity Verification Program (RIVP) that started in February 2025. If you miss their calls, they'll attempt to reach you three times before placing a hold on your claim. The best approach is to answer unknown numbers while you're receiving benefits. They typically call between 8am-5pm on weekdays. If you're selected for verification and don't complete it, your payments will be paused until you do.

The call I got was from a 512 area code (Austin) and they left a message saying they needed to verify my identity for continued benefits.
