TWC identity verification email - legitimate or scam?
Hey everyone, I just filed for unemployment with TWC last week and requested my first payment yesterday. This morning I got an email saying I need to verify my identity before they'll process anything. Is this normal? The email looks official but I'm paranoid about clicking links. Do most people have to do this identity verification thing or should I call TWC to make sure this isn't some kind of scam? The email mentioned something about ID.me but I've never heard of that before.

Yep thats totally normal! I got the same thing back in January. Its legit, TWC uses ID.me for identity verification now. Gotta stop all the fraud happening I guess.

•Thanks for the quick reply! Have you gone through the process? Is it complicated? I'm not super tech-savvy and worried about messing something up.

Yes, this is a legitimate requirement. The Texas Workforce Commission now requires identity verification through ID.me for most new claims. It's an extra security step to prevent fraudulent claims. Make sure you're using the official link from the TWC website though, not just clicking from the email directly. You'll need to upload photos of your ID and take a selfie video for facial recognition. Have all your documents ready before starting as the process needs to be completed in one session. I recommend doing this ASAP because your claim will remain pending until verification is complete, and payment requests will not be processed until you're verified.

•Thank you for the detailed explanation! That makes me feel better. I'll gather my driver's license and social security card now. Do you know how long it usually takes for them to verify everything once I submit it?

Most verifications through ID.me are processed within 24-48 hours, but it can be immediate in some cases. If you run into any technical issues during the process (which happens frequently), you'll need to contact ID.me support directly, not TWC. They have a help chat on their website. Once verified, it can take an additional 1-3 business days for TWC to update your claim status. If it takes longer than a week total, that's when you should contact TWC directly about the delay.

•UGH the ID.me verification is THE WORST!! I spent 3 HOURS trying to get through it and kept getting kicked out of the system. Then when I finally submitted everything, they put me in a "trusted referee" queue that took DAYS!! By the time I got verified, I'd already missed a payment request period and had to start all over. The whole system is designed to make people give up. Texas just doesn't want to pay unemployment to people who deserve it!!

•Oh no, that sounds stressful! Did you have to keep calling repeatedly to get through? I've heard the TWC phone lines are impossible to reach a human on these days.

If you're having trouble reaching TWC by phone (which is very common), I'd recommend using Claimyr.com to help you get through to an agent. It saved me hours of frustration when I had issues with my ID.me verification not connecting properly to my TWC account. They have a service that helps you get through to TWC agents without the endless busy signals and disconnections. They even have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/V-IMvH88P1U?si=kNxmh025COIlIzKh Hopefully your verification goes smoothly, but if you need to talk to someone at TWC directly, that's a good option to have.

•Thanks for the suggestion! I'll try the ID.me verification first and hope it goes smoothly. But if I run into issues, I'll definitely check out that service rather than banging my head against the wall trying to call TWC directly.

Oh yea and make sure u do the verfication from a smart phone NOT a computer. My brother tried on his laptop and it was a total disaster but worked fine on his phone!

Just to clarify some information here - ID.me verification can be completed on either a computer or smartphone. The smartphone is required for the selfie verification part, but you can start the process on a computer and then use the ID.me mobile app when prompted for the face verification. Also important: once verified, continue submitting your payment requests on schedule even if your claim still shows as pending. Missed payment requests can't be made up later, regardless of verification delays.

•That's really helpful information, thank you! I've got my ID.me verification completed this morning and it said I was successfully verified. My TWC account still shows pending, but I'll make sure to keep requesting payments on time. Appreciate all the help from everyone!

Glad to hear your verification went smoothly! Yes, definitely keep requesting payments on your regular schedule. The system will catch up and process them once everything is verified on their end. If your account is still showing pending after 5 business days, that's when you might need to contact TWC directly.

Just wanted to add my experience - I went through ID.me verification about 6 weeks ago and it was pretty straightforward. The whole process took maybe 20 minutes. One tip: have your phone charged up because the facial recognition part can drain your battery if you have to retry it a few times. Also, if you wear glasses like I do, you might need to take them off for the selfie part. Good luck!

•Thanks for the tip about keeping your phone charged! I didn't think about that but it makes sense. I wear glasses too so I'll remember to take them off for the selfie part. It's reassuring to hear so many people have gotten through the process successfully, even if some had hiccups along the way. Really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences here!

Just wanted to share that I completed my ID.me verification about 3 weeks ago and everything went smoothly! One thing I wish I had known beforehand is that you should clear your browser cache before starting the process. I had some weird glitches at first but once I cleared my cache and started fresh, it worked perfectly. The whole thing took about 15 minutes and my TWC account was updated within 48 hours. Don't stress too much about it - the process is actually pretty user-friendly once you get started!

•That's a great tip about clearing the browser cache! I wouldn't have thought of that but it makes total sense that old cached data could cause glitches. It's so helpful hearing from people who've actually been through this process recently. I'm feeling much more confident about tackling the ID.me verification now that I know what to expect. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Just wanted to chime in as someone who recently went through this! I got the same ID.me verification email about 2 weeks ago and was super suspicious at first too. But it's definitely legit - TWC really does use ID.me now for identity verification. A few things that helped me: Make sure you have good wifi connection before starting, have your driver's license ready, and do it when you have about 30 minutes of uninterrupted time. The facial recognition part was actually kind of fun once I got over being nervous about it! My verification was approved within a few hours and my TWC account updated the next day. Don't let the horror stories scare you too much - most people get through it just fine, they just don't post about smooth experiences as much as the problematic ones. You've got this!

•Thank you so much for the encouragement! You're absolutely right that we tend to hear more about the problems than the smooth experiences. It's really reassuring to hear from someone who just went through it successfully. I like your point about having a good wifi connection - I hadn't thought about that but it makes sense that a spotty connection could cause issues during the verification process. I'm going to set aside some time this weekend when I can focus on it without distractions. Really appreciate you taking the time to share the positive perspective!

I went through the ID.me verification process about a month ago and wanted to share my experience since I see you got some great advice already! The whole thing took me about 25 minutes from start to finish. One thing that really helped was making sure I was in a well-lit room - I tried doing it initially in my dim kitchen and the facial recognition kept failing. Once I moved to a room with better lighting, it worked perfectly on the first try. Also, don't panic if the system seems to hang for a minute or two during processing - that's normal. I thought it had crashed but it was just working through the verification. My TWC account showed the update within about 36 hours after completing ID.me. The key is just being patient with the process and having all your documents ready before you start. Good luck!
