NYDOL UI Account Locked Out: Google Authenticator MFA Not Syncing, Need Help ASAP!

Hey everyone, I'm having a major issue with my unemployment account. My Google Authenticator isn't syncing anymore, and it's the only MFA method I have set up. Now I can't access my UI records at all. Has anyone else run into this problem? Any ideas on how to fix it or who to contact? I'm getting pretty desperate here.

Ugh, that sucks! I had a similar issue last year. Have you tried calling the DOL directly? They should be able to reset your MFA settings for you.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've been trying to call them for days, but the lines are always busy. It's so frustrating!

Pro tip: call right when they open. Like, set an alarm and everything. Sometimes you can get through if youre one of the first callers of the day.

That's a good idea, I'll give it a shot. What time do they open?

I think its 8 AM, but double check on there website to be sure. Good luck!

I feel your pain, OP. The DOL's system is such a mess. Have you tried using a different device to access your account? Sometimes that can help with syncing issues.

Hey, I actually found a way to get someone on the phone! I used this site called claimyr.com - it's a calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, and then sends the call to your phone when a live agent picks up. It costs $20, but it worked for me. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

I get it, but for me, it was worth it. Time is money, and I was wasting so much time trying to get through.

Have you tried resetting your Google Authenticator? Sometimes uninstalling and reinstalling the app can fix syncing issues. Just make sure you have your backup codes handy before you do it!

I didn't even think of that! Unfortunately, I don't have my backup codes... 😭 Guess I learned that lesson the hard way.

This is why I always tell people to set up multiple MFA methods. It's a pain, but it can save you from situations like this. For anyone reading: GO SET UP A BACKUP METHOD RIGHT NOW!

💯 This right here. I use both Google Authenticator and SMS as backup. Never had an issue.

Okay, listen up because I've been through this exact situation and I know how to fix it. Here's what you need to do: 1. First, try to log in using any backup codes you might have. If that doesn't work, move on to step 2. 2. Call the DOL at their main number (it's on their website). You might have to try multiple times due to high call volume. 3. When you get through, explain that you've lost access to your account due to MFA issues. Be polite but firm - they deal with this a lot. 4. They'll ask you to verify your identity. Have your SSN, DOB, and any claim numbers ready. 5. Request that they reset your MFA settings. They can do this on their end. 6. Once reset, they'll guide you through setting up a new MFA method. I recommend setting up both an authenticator app AND SMS as a backup. 7. After you regain access, immediately go to your account settings and set up additional recovery options. It might take some time and patience, but this process should get you back into your account. Good luck!

I went through something similar a few months ago! One thing that helped me was also trying to reach out through their online contact form on the DOL website - sometimes they respond faster to written requests than phone calls. Also, if you have any local workforce development offices in your area, they might be able to help escalate your case or provide guidance on getting through to the right department. Don't give up, you'll get through this!

That's a really good point about the online contact form! I hadn't thought of that option. And the local workforce development office idea is brilliant - they probably have direct contacts at the DOL. Thanks for sharing your experience, it gives me hope that this will get sorted out eventually!

I had this exact same issue last month! My Google Authenticator got out of sync after I got a new phone. What worked for me was going to my local CareerCenter (they're part of the workforce development system) - they have a direct line to DOL tech support that bypasses the regular phone queue. The staff there was super helpful and got me connected within like 20 minutes instead of the hours I was spending on hold. You can find your nearest location on the DOL website. They also helped me set up SMS backup so I won't get stuck like this again. Definitely worth a shot if calling directly isn't working!

This is such great advice! I had no idea that CareerCenters had direct lines to DOL tech support - that's a total game changer. I've been banging my head against the wall trying to get through the regular phone lines. Definitely going to look up my nearest location first thing tomorrow morning. Thanks for sharing this tip, you might have just saved me days of frustration!
