How do I reset MFA for NY unemployment online account after getting locked out?
Got locked out of my ny.gov account yesterday because I can't get past the multi-factor authentication. I originally set it up with Google Authenticator about 4 months ago, but now that app keeps giving me codes that don't work when I try to log in. After 3 failed attempts, the system completely locked me out. I've tried calling the tech support number like 15 times today but just get the automated message saying they're experiencing high call volume. Now I can't certify for my weekly benefits online and have to call in, which is another nightmare. Has anyone successfully reset their MFA after getting locked out? Is there some secret email or special department I should contact? This is so frustrating because I need to certify by tomorrow or I'll miss this week's payment.

ugh same boat. I got locked out 2 weeks ago and ended up missing a certification bc of it. The MFA system is garbage. I had mine set to text message and suddenly stopped getting the texts. After 20+ calls I finally got through to someone who told me there's a dedicated tech support line but wouldn't give me the direct number. Had to wait 3 more days for a callback. 😡

•Did they eventually fix it for you? What number did you call that actually worked? I'm desperate here

•yeah they finally fixed it but it took FOREVER. I just kept calling the main number until someone picked up. Took like 30 attempts over 3 days. Just keep trying 🤦♀️

After dealing with the same nightmare for days, I finally found a solution that actually works! I used claimyr.com and got through to a real person in like 30 minutes. They transferred me to tech support and got my account unlocked while I was on the phone. Talking to an agent got my account fixed so fast - wish I'd known about this earlier instead of wasting days trying to get through. Here's a video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•is this actually real? sounds too good to be true tbh

•Yeah it's 100% real. I was skeptical too but was desperate after a week of trying to get through. They just call on your behalf and wait on hold, then when someone answers they connect you. Saved me hours of hold music 🙌

•I used it last month when my claim was stuck in pending for weeks. Got through to someone who fixed it on the spot. Best money I ever spent after missing 3 weeks of payments.

•not gonna lie I thought this was BS but checked out that video and it actually makes sense. might try it tomorrow if I still can't get through

You need to call the tech support line directly at 888-503-0447. They deal with all ny.gov ID issues. BUT they are almost impossible to reach. I had to call 42 times over 3 days before getting through.

•Thanks! Did they actually help you reset the MFA when you got through?

•Yeah they reset it for me but it was a whole process. They had to verify my identity by asking a ton of questions about my claim history. Took like 30 min once I finally got someone.

Here's exactly what you need to do (I work in IT and helped my brother with this exact issue last month): 1. First, make sure you're actually locked out of your NY.GOV ID and not just your unemployment account (they're different systems) 2. Call the NY.GOV ID support line at 844-891-1786. They open at 7:30am and that's your best chance of getting through - call EXACTLY at opening time. 3. If you can't get through by phone after multiple attempts, you can email them at NYGOVIDSupport@its.ny.gov - include your full name, date of birth, and explain your MFA issue clearly. DON'T include any social security numbers or claim IDs in your email. 4. If it's been over a week with no response, try reaching out through the contact form on the NY unemployment website. 5. As a last resort, many people have had success using claimyr.com to get through to a human. It's a service that waits on hold for you and calls when they get an agent. The MFA system is actually relatively new and they're still working out the bugs. Google Authenticator in particular seems to cause the most problems. Good luck!

•They're definitely overwhelmed but they do respond eventually. My brother heard back in 9 days. But yeah, calling is usually faster if you can get through.

•I can confirm claimyr works. Used it last week after being on hold for 3+ hours myself. Was skeptical but got a callback in about 45 mins.

Did you try going to your local DOL office in person? I had an account issue and just walked in. Took about 2 hours of waiting but they reset everything for me.

Axel Bourke
•I didn't realize you could do that! Do you need an appointment or can you just walk in?

Nadia Zaldivar
•It depends on which office. Some require appointments but the one in Albany lets you walk in. Just bring ID and be prepared to wait.

This is why I always set up multiple MFA options!!! When you first configure it they give you the option for backup methods. But they don't make it obvious. Now ur stuck in MFA hell 😱

Why does ny unemployment make EVERYTHING so difficult? Like seriously, every other website has a simple "forgot password" or "reset authentication" option. But noooo, with NYSDOL you gotta sacrifice your firstborn just to log in 🤦♂️

This happened to me in April and I was going CRAZY trying to fix it. The regular unemployment phone people can't help with ID.NY.GOV issues - you need to talk to the tech support team specifically. After days of trying I used claimyr.com to get through. It costs money but saved my sanity and I got my account back same day.

Have you tried Twitter? Not even joking - I tweeted at @NYSLabor with my issue (not including any personal info) and they DM'd me asking for details. Got a call back the next day from someone who helped reset everything.

Pro tip: call exactly at 8:00am when they open OR right after lunch around 1:05pm. Those are the times when the queue is shortest. Avoid calling on Mondays or Fridays when volume is highest.

is your Google Authenticator on a new phone by any chance? The codes are tied to the specific device, so if you got a new phone without transferring the authenticator app properly, the codes won't work anymore.

•Yes!!! I did get a new phone about 2 weeks ago. That must be what happened.

•Mystery solved! Unfortunately that means you definitely need to call them to reset it. The backup codes would have been your only other option.

•Yeah that's exactly what happened to me too! When I got my new iPhone I forgot to transfer my authenticator app properly. Had to call that tech support number someone mentioned earlier - 844-891-1786. Took forever to get through but they walked me through resetting it. Make sure you have all your personal info ready when you call because they ask a million verification questions.

Contact your state representative/assemblyperson!! I was locked out for THREE WEEKS, couldn't get through on any number. Finally emailed my state rep and their office contacted unemployment directly. Got a call from a supervisor the next day who fixed everything.

Did u check if ur phone time is synced correctly? Google authenticator depends on your phone time being exactly right. If its off by even a minute the codes wont work.

I went through this exact nightmare last month! Got a new phone and forgot to transfer my Google Authenticator properly. After days of trying to get through on the phone, I finally had success with a few things: 1. Try calling 844-891-1786 (the NY.GOV ID support line) right at 7:30am when they open - that's when I finally got through after 20+ attempts 2. When you do get someone, have ALL your info ready - they'll ask for your full name, DOB, address, social security number, and details about your unemployment claim to verify your identity 3. The whole process took about 45 minutes once I got connected, but they were able to completely reset my MFA and let me set it up fresh 4. Pro tip: when you set it up again, DEFINITELY set up backup authentication methods and write down the backup codes they give you! The key is persistence and calling at the right time. Don't give up - you'll get through eventually! And make sure you certify by phone in the meantime so you don't miss your payments.

•This is super helpful! I'm definitely going to try calling right at 7:30am tomorrow. Quick question - when you say "backup authentication methods," what options did they give you? I want to make sure I don't get stuck in this same situation again if something happens to my phone.

•@Ethan Moore Thanks for the detailed breakdown! When they reset your MFA, what backup options did they offer? I m'dealing with the same issue new (phone, didn t'transfer authenticator and) want to make sure I set up multiple methods this time so I don t'get locked out again. Did they let you use SMS as a backup or just the backup codes?

•@Ethan Moore This is exactly what I needed to hear! I m'going to set my alarm for 7:25am tomorrow and call right when they open. Really appreciate you mentioning the backup codes - I had no idea that was even an option when I first set up my MFA. Did they give you the choice between SMS backup and just the printed backup codes, or do you get both? Also, did you have to wait long once you got connected, or did they transfer you directly to someone who could help with the MFA reset?

•@Ethan Moore Thank you SO much for this detailed guide! I m'in the exact same boat - got a new phone 2 weeks ago and completely forgot about transferring the authenticator app until I tried to log in yesterday. I m'definitely setting my alarm for 7:25am to call right when they open. One quick question - when they were verifying your identity, did they ask about specific claim dates or just general info about your unemployment history? I want to make sure I have everything ready so I don t'waste the opportunity when I finally get through to someone. Really appreciate you taking the time to write all this out!

•@Ethan Moore This is exactly the help I needed! Just to clarify - when they reset your MFA, did they let you choose between different backup options like SMS texts or email, or do you only get those printed backup codes? I want to set up multiple ways to get back in if this happens again. And during the identity verification, did they ask about specific dates from your claim or just general personal info? Want to be totally prepared when I call at 7:30 tomorrow morning. Thanks again for the detailed walkthrough!

I had this exact same issue a few months ago! The frustrating part is that Google Authenticator doesn't automatically sync when you get a new phone - you have to manually transfer it or you're completely locked out. Here's what finally worked for me: I ended up using a combination approach - first I tried the direct tech support line (844-891-1786) at exactly 7:30am like others mentioned, but also sent an email to NYGOVIDSupport@its.ny.gov at the same time explaining my situation. The email took about 6 days to get a response, but they sent me specific instructions on what info to provide for identity verification. When I finally got through on the phone (took 3 days of calling right at opening), they were able to reset everything in about 20 minutes once they verified my identity. They asked for standard stuff - name, DOB, SSN, address, and a few questions about my claim start date and benefit amount. The key thing is to set up multiple backup methods once you get back in! They offer SMS backup, email backup, AND backup codes. I now have all three set up so I never get stuck like this again. In the meantime, definitely call to certify by phone so you don't miss your weekly payment. The automated phone certification system is separate from the online account, so that should still work for you. Don't give up - it's frustrating as hell but you will get through eventually!

•This is super helpful! I'm in the same boat and have been calling for days with no luck. Quick question - when you say they offer SMS backup, email backup AND backup codes, do you get to choose all three or do you have to pick one? I want to make sure I set up every possible option so I never deal with this nightmare again. Also, did the email response actually give you useful info or just generic troubleshooting steps?

I just went through this exact same nightmare last week! The Google Authenticator issue with new phones is so common but they don't warn you about it anywhere. Here's what worked for me after 4 days of hell: Called 844-891-1786 at exactly 7:30am (set multiple alarms!) and finally got through on day 3. The rep was actually really helpful once I explained I got a new phone and didn't transfer my authenticator properly. They asked me to verify: full name, DOB, SSN, current address, when I first filed my claim, and my weekly benefit amount. The whole reset took about 25 minutes once connected. IMPORTANT: When you set it back up, they'll give you the option for SMS backup AND recovery codes - GET BOTH! I also screenshot the QR code this time just in case. For now, call 888-209-8124 to certify by phone so you don't miss this week's payment. The automated system doesn't require your online login. The MFA system is definitely broken but don't give up - you'll get through! Just keep calling right at opening time.

•Thank you so much for sharing this! I'm dealing with the exact same issue right now - got a new phone and completely forgot about the authenticator app until I tried to log in yesterday. This is such a relief to know there's actually a solution that works. I'm definitely going to set my alarm for 7:25am tomorrow and try calling right at opening. Quick question - when they gave you the SMS backup option, did you have to use the same phone number that's on file with your unemployment account, or could you add a different backup number? And thanks for the tip about screenshotting the QR code - that's brilliant and I never would have thought of that!

OMG thank you all so much for the detailed responses! Reading through these comments is the first hope I've had in 2 days. @Ethan Moore @Felix Grigori @Luca Greco - you guys are lifesavers with those step-by-step breakdowns. I'm definitely going to try calling 844-891-1786 right at 7:30am tomorrow (already set 3 alarms lol). And yes @Vince Eh you were totally right - I got a new iPhone about 2 weeks ago and completely forgot about transferring the Google Authenticator. That's 100% what caused this mess. I'm writing down all the backup info everyone mentioned so I have everything ready when I (hopefully) get through to someone. In the meantime I'll call the phone certification number so I don't miss this week's payment. This community is amazing - thank you all for taking the time to help! 🙏

•Hey @Nathaniel Stewart! I went through this exact same thing about 6 months ago when I switched from Android to iPhone. The Google Authenticator transfer is such a pain and they really don't make it obvious how important it is to do it properly. One thing I wanted to add that helped me - if you can't get through on that 844 number right at 7:30am, also try calling around 12:45pm right before lunch ends. I noticed the hold times were sometimes shorter then. Also, make sure your phone's time is set to automatic before you try any of the backup methods they give you - learned that the hard way! Good luck tomorrow and definitely don't give up if the first few attempts don't work. It took me almost a week of trying but I eventually got through and they were super helpful once connected.

•@Nathaniel Stewart I feel your pain! I went through this exact nightmare about 3 months ago when I upgraded my phone. One thing that really helped me when I finally got through was having my unemployment confirmation letter handy - they asked for my claim confirmation number during verification which I almost forgot about. Also, if the 7:30am calling doesn t'work out tomorrow, don t'forget about that Twitter suggestion from @Adaline Wong - I was skeptical but ended up tweeting at @NYSLabor around day 5 of trying and actually got a DM response within a few hours. Sometimes the social media team can escalate things faster than the phone lines. You got this! 💪
