NY unemployment says I owe $220 - will they deduct it all from next week's payment?

they usually take it all in one shot unless you call and set up a payment plan. happened to me in April - they said I owed $268 and then when I certified the next week, my payment was short exactly that amount. Its BS that they don't make this clearer on there site.

Y'all are lucky if its just $220. NY unemployment hit me with a $1700 overpayment notice last month! 😭 Said I didn't report some income from Feb. I'm still fighting it cause I DEFINITELY reported everything correctly.

Just FYI I've been through this. They took the full amount out of my next payment but when I called they said I could have set up a payment plan BEFORE they took it. The system is designed to take full payment unless you intervene. Call them ASAP!!

to answer ur original question, yes they will take the WHOLE $220 at once unless u call them and set up a payment plan. and u better call BEFORE u certify again or it'll be too late

I hate how NY Unemployment dosent explain this stuff clearly.The whole system feels designed to confuse people so they can take more money back. Its like they WANT us to mess up so they can claim "overpayments" 🙄

they will 100% take all of it in one shot unless you call and set up a payment plan. its in the fine print of that letter they sent you. i had to borrow money from a friend when they did this to me cause my rent was due the same week 😡

If you received an overpayment notice, you should check if you qualify for a WAIVER! A lot of people don't know this exists. If the overpayment wasn't your fault or would cause financial hardship, you can apply for a waiver and potentially not have to pay it back at all. Worth checking into!

When I had an overpayment, I used a trick I learned. Request a hearing to dispute it - this puts the collection on hold while your case is pending. Buys you time to save up to pay it back or work out a payment plan. Just an option if you're desperate.

In my experience they take maximum 50% of your weekly benefit amount for overpayments. So with $490 benefit, they shouldn't take more than $245 per week.

This whole system is BROKEN. I had a similar issue and spent WEEKS trying to talk to someone. When I finally got through, they admitted it was their error but still made me pay it back. New York unemployment is a joke.
