NY unemployment payment delayed due to holiday - will it arrive tomorrow?

Hi everyone, just wondering if NY unemployment payments will go out tomorrow as scheduled or if they'll be delayed because of today's holiday? My mom relies on her weekly benefits and gets nervous when there's any change to the payment schedule. Has anyone received official info from NYSDOL about this? Thanks!

Thanks for responding! Do you know if NYSDOL ever posts announcements about these delays, or is it just something we have to expect?

According to the NYSDOL website, payments are typically delayed by one business day following a federal holiday. So if you normally receive payment on Tuesdays, you'll likely see it on Wednesday this week. The actual certification process is unaffected - just the bank processing that gets pushed back.

Thank you so much for the clear explanation! I'll let my mom know she should expect it Wednesday instead of tomorrow. That's really helpful.

my payment ALWAYS gets messed up on holiday weeks idk why but for some reason mine takes an extra 2-3 days every single time there's a holiday it's SO ANNOYING

That's unusual for it to take 2-3 extra days consistently. Most payment delays from holidays are just one business day. You might want to check if there's something specific about your claim that causes this longer delay. Have you tried calling NYSDOL to ask about it?

I had this exact problem last holiday and couldn't get a straight answer when I called NYSDOL - spent HOURS on hold and got disconnected twice. Finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an agent in about 15 minutes. They explained that holiday payments are always processed the next business day, so expect it Wednesday. They also helped fix a recurring issue with my account that was causing extra delays. Check out their video if you're struggling to reach someone: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Yeah, it actually does. I was super skeptical too but was desperate after trying for 3 days straight. They called me back with an agent on the line way faster than I expected.

Is it just me or does the NYSDOL website never actually tell you ANYTHING useful about these delays?? I've been on unemployment for 4 months now and EVERY holiday this happens and EVERY time I have to scramble to figure out when money will arrive. Why can't they just put a big banner on the homepage that says "PAYMENTS DELAYED DUE TO HOLIDAY"??? So frustrating!!!!

You're right that they could communicate this better. The information is technically on their website under the FAQ section, but it's not prominently displayed. I recommend signing up for their text alerts - they sometimes send updates about payment processing during holiday weeks.

Just to add another data point - my payment last holiday was exactly one day late. Has been that way for every holiday since I started collecting in January 2025.

Good point! She always certifies Sunday morning like clockwork. That part she's super consistent about.

Has anyone else noticed they're being extra slow processing everything this year? My initial claim took FOREVER, and now every little hiccup adds days to when I get paid. I'm worried this holiday delay will turn into something longer...

Processing times have actually improved compared to last year according to NYSDOL statistics. The average initial claim processing time is down to 10 days from 14 days in 2024. Holiday delays should still just be the standard one business day for most people, assuming there are no other issues with your claim.

my cousin said she got her payment today even tho its a holiday...is that even possible??

It's unlikely she received an actual deposit today since banks don't process ACH transfers on federal holidays. She might have received a pending notification that will clear tomorrow, or perhaps she's referring to a payment that was processed before the holiday but she only noticed today.

Thanks everyone for the responses! I've let my mom know to expect the payment on Wednesday instead of tomorrow. She was getting anxious about it, so having a clear answer helps a lot. I'll also tell her about the text alerts - didn't know that was an option!
