Will ny unemployment payments be delayed because of the holiday this week?
Does anyone know if our benefits are going to be delayed this week because of the holiday? My mom usually gets her money on Tuesdays but I heard that bank processing might be a day or two slower because of the holiday weekend. She really needs the money on time to pay some bills that are due Wednesday. Called the unemployment office earlier today but gave up after waiting for almost 50 minutes. Has anyone experienced payment delays after holidays in the past? Would appreciate any info on this!

Yeah payments are probably gonna be a day late. Happens with every holiday. When I was collecting last year after I got laid off, it would always take an extra business day for the money to hit my account when there was a holiday. Tell your mom to plan ahead next time or she's gonna be stressin every holiday.

•Thanks! I'll let her know. She just started collecting 3 months ago so this is her first holiday on unemployment.

I was in the same boat trying to get info about my payments last month. Got frustrated with the phone wait times and ended up using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com). They called unemployment for me and got me connected to an actual person who confirmed my payment schedule. Best money I've ever spent to get quick answers! They also have a video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•Is this for real? Sounds too good to be true...how does it even work?

•Yeah it's real! They basically call the unemployment office FOR you and stay on hold so you don't have to. When they get an agent, they connect the call to your phone. Saved me like 2 hours of hold music lol

•Not a scam at all. I was skeptical too but when you're desperate to get answers about your money, you'll try anything. It actually worked for me when nothing else did.

•wait do they ask for your ssn or personal info? cause thats sketchy af

•They don't ask for any personal info! You only talk to the actual DOL agent. The service just gets you connected faster.

It depends on your bank tbh. I have Chase and they usually process the deposit a day late after holidays. My roommate has a local credit union and sometimes his payment isn't delayed at all. The unemployment system processes payments on schedule, but it's the banks that might take longer to post it.

I've been on NY unemployment for the past 7 months, and in my experience, there's almost ALWAYS a delay after federal holidays. The system seems to run the payments on schedule, but the bank processing is what causes the delay. For me it's typically been just 1 day late, but I've seen it take 2 days extra after Thanksgiving last year. Your mom should probably call her bank to see if they have any info about holiday processing times.

•Thanks for the detailed response! My mom uses Bank of America, I'll tell her to contact them directly.

•No problem! Bank of America is usually pretty good about posting deposits, but holidays always throw things off. Another tip: if she signs up for direct deposit alerts through her banking app, she'll get notified the moment the money hits her account.

The NY DOL website says payments are processed on schedule but may be delayed due to banking holiday schedules. So technically the unemployment office does their part on time, but the banks take longer to process everything. It sucks when you're counting on that money to pay bills.

•This is correct. I work at a financial institution (not speaking officially), and ACH transfers don't process on federal holidays. So the deposit will be delayed by at least one business day.

Have your mom check her payment history on the DOL website. If it shows as "released" for the current week, that means they've processed it on their end and it's just waiting for the bank to post it. If it doesn't show as released yet, then there might be an issue beyond just the holiday delay.

If your mom absolutely needs the money by Wednesday, and it doesn't come through in time, she could look into services like Dave or Earnin that let you get a small advance on expected deposits. They usually front you up to like $100 with no interest. Just another option if she's in a bind.

•Those apps are predatory AF. They claim no interest but they pressure you for "tips" and track all your financial data. Better to ask family for a short term loan if possible.

•Fair point. Just throwing out options for emergency situations. Not everyone has family they can ask for money.

WHY 👏 DOESN'T 👏 THE 👏 UNEMPLOYMENT 👏 OFFICE 👏 EVER 👏 COMMUNICATE 👏 THIS 👏 STUFF! Would it kill them to send a mass email saying "hey your payments might be delayed because of the holiday" instead of making everyone panic?? Their communication is trash 🗑️

This happens literally every holiday and people act surprised every time lol. Yes, your payment will be delayed. Yes, it sucks. No, there's nothing you can do about it except plan accordingly.

I've been dealing with NY unemployment for over a year now, and let me give you the definitive answer based on my experience with holiday payment schedules: Yes, payments are typically delayed by at least one business day after federal holidays. The NYSDOL processes claims on schedule, but the banking system doesn't process ACH transfers on federal holidays. Here's what your mom should know: - Check her payment history on the DOL website to see if her payment has been released - Most banks will process the deposit on the next business day after the holiday - Bank of America (if that's what she uses) typically posts unemployment deposits by early afternoon - If she absolutely needs funds immediately, you can try calling DOL directly Calling the unemployment office is almost impossible with the wait times, though. I personally use claimyr.com when I need to get through. They call and wait on hold for you, then connect you with an agent. Saved me countless hours and got my payment issues fixed when I was in a similar situation. Hope this helps your mom!

pro tip: always keep an emergency buffer of at least one week's worth of benefits if possible. holidays, system glitches, and random payment holds happen ALL THE TIME with ny unemployment. saved my butt numerous times.
