NY unemployment benefits ending Sept 5th - when is the final claim date?
I'm really confused about the ending of ny unemployment benefits on September 5th, 2025. Do we still claim on September 5th and then receive our final payment around the 14th? Or is the week ending August 29th actually our last claim week? The DOL website is so vague and I can't get through on the phone. Has anyone gotten clear information about this? I don't want to miss my last payment but also don't want to waste time trying to claim if it's already over.

The last day to certify is indeed September 5th, 2025. This covers the benefit week ending September 4th. You'll receive your final payment within 3-5 business days after certification, so likely around September 9-11th depending on your bank. The NYS DOL always pays for the previous week, not the current one, so you need to certify on the 5th to get that final week's benefits.

•Thank you so much! I was worried I'd already missed the final claim. So just to double check - I'll certify on Sept 5th for the week of Aug 29-Sept 4th, right?

•Thanks! That's what I thought, but the wording on the website had me second-guessing myself.

I went through this last year when my benefits ended. You definitely claim on the 5th for the previous week. But make sure you do it early that day because sometimes the system gets really backed up on deadline days!

•Good point about doing it early. I'll set an alarm to make sure I don't forget!

THEY ALWAYS DO THIS!! Every time benefits change or end, the DOL makes everything confusing on purpose so people miss out on their final payments. I've been through 3 different benefit periods and EVERY TIME they make it impossible to understand the final dates. The system is DESIGNED to cheat people out of their last week!!

•While the system can definitely be confusing, I don't think it's intentionally designed to cheat people. The September 5th certification date is for the benefit week of August 29th-September 4th. This follows the normal pattern of certifying after a completed week.

I'm in the same boat and super worried about this too. Has anyone actually called and confirmed this with a real person? I've been trying to call for 3 days and can't get through to anyone. I really need this last payment to cover rent while I'm waiting for my new job to start. What happens if the system crashes on the 5th and we can't certify??

•You can try using Claimyr to get through to an agent. I was in the same situation last month with a different question and couldn't get through for days. Used their service at claimyr.com and got connected to an agent in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE - definitely worth it when you're dealing with something this important and time-sensitive.

UPDATE: I finally got through to someone at the DOL! They confirmed that yes, September 5th is the final day to certify for the week ending September 4th. So we do get to claim that final week. She also mentioned that if for some reason you can't certify on the 5th, you have until September 12th to certify for that last week, but obviously better to do it sooner rather than later. Hope this helps anyone else who was confused!

•That's actually really helpful, thank you. I hadn't thought about SNAP but I probably will qualify at least temporarily.

Just to add some clarity: In NY unemployment, you always certify for the previous week. The certification period opens on Sunday and most people certify on Sunday or Monday, but you technically have until the following Saturday to certify. So for the week ending Thursday, September 4th, 2025, you can certify starting Sunday, September 5th. If you have any issues with your final certification, remember you can request backdated certification for good cause if something prevents you from certifying on time.

•This is so helpful and clear. Thank you!! Do you know if we need to do anything special for this final certification, or just do it the regular way?

•Just certify the regular way. There's nothing special you need to do for the final certification. The system will automatically process it as your last payment.

I was stressed about this too! Called about 50 times yesterday with no luck. Finally used claimyr.com to get through this morning and got confirmation that Sept 5th is indeed the day to certify for the last week. The agent also told me that they're extending their call center hours that day because they expect high volume. Worth the money to get a definitive answer for me.

•Of COURSE they're making you PAY to get basic information that should be clearly stated on their website! Just another way they try to cheat us out of benefits we've EARNED.

Important note for everyone: Make sure you've resolved any pending issues with your claim before the program ends. If you have any outstanding documents they've requested or interviews scheduled, complete those ASAP. After the program ends, it becomes much harder to resolve issues that might be holding up your final payments.

•That's a really good point I hadn't considered. Thankfully I don't have any pending issues, but I can see how that could cause problems.
