Confused about NY unemployment final claim date - Sept 5 or Aug 29?
Hi everyone, I'm getting really confused about when my last week to claim NY unemployment benefits actually is. I got a notification saying something about September 5, 2025 being the final date, but then someone told me that the week ending August 29 is actually the last week we can claim for. Does anyone know which is correct? I don't want to miss out on my final week of benefits because of a misunderstanding. Has anyone received clear information about this from NYSDOL? I've tried calling but can't get through to a real person.

Aug 29 is the last WEEK you can claim for, but you have until Sept 5 to SUBMIT that claim. So you're claiming for the week ending Aug 29, but you have until Sept 5 to actually do the certification.

•Thank you! That makes sense. So I need to make sure I certify for that Aug 29 week no later than Sept 5, right?

I think it depends on when your benefit year ends. Mine ends in October so I can keep claiming after Aug 29.

•Actually, this is incorrect. The September 5 deadline and August 29 week ending date are specifically related to the Extended Benefits program that's ending. Regular UI claims follow your benefit year, but if OP is asking about the EB program ending, then the previous answer was correct - August 29 is the last week that can be claimed, with certification due by September 5.

This gets confusing because of how NY unemployment works. Let me clarify: 1. The week ending August 29, 2025 is the final CLAIMABLE week for the Extended Benefits program 2. September 5, 2025 is the DEADLINE to submit your certification for that final week 3. Regular UI claims aren't affected by these dates - they end based on your individual benefit year So if you're on Extended Benefits, make sure you certify for that Aug 29 week before Sept 5. If you're on regular UI, check your benefit year end date in your online account.

•This is SO helpful, thank you! I am on Extended Benefits, so this makes perfect sense now. I'll make sure to certify for that final week before the deadline.

•wait so do we still certify on sunday like normal for that last week? or do we have to do something different?

•You certify normally, just like you always do. The Sunday after August 29 would be August 31, so you can certify then as usual. You just have until September 5 as the absolute final deadline if you miss the Sunday certification for some reason.

I'm so confused!!!! My claim says it ends in December but now there's these other dates?? Why doesn't the system just tell us exactly when OUR SPECIFIC claim ends instead of all these different dates floating around? I'm seriously stressing out about this.

•It's okay! If your claim says December, then you're likely on regular UI, not Extended Benefits. The August/September dates only apply to people on the EB program. Your December date should be correct for your specific situation.

I was having the same problem last week - couldn't figure out my end date and couldn't get through to anyone on the phone. I ended up using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get connected to an agent without waiting. They have this service that gets you through the phone queue. Watched their demo video (https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE) and decided to try it. Got through to an agent in about 20 minutes who confirmed my specific end date and cleared everything up. Definitely worth it for peace of mind.

•Thanks for the suggestion! I might try that if I can't figure this out. Did they explain everything clearly when you got through?

•Yeah, the agent was actually really helpful. She pulled up my specific account and told me exactly which program I was on and the exact last date I could claim. She also explained why there were different dates being mentioned, which helped clear up the confusion.

this whole system is ridiclous... they make it so complicated on purpose i swear! why cant they just send everyone a letter with their EXACT end date instead of making us figure it out?? smh

•Agreed! I've been on unemployment twice in the past year and both times I got different information from different people. One rep would tell me one thing and another would say something completely different.

Update: I was able to speak with someone at NYSDOL finally. They confirmed what several of you said - for the Extended Benefits program, August 29 is the last week we can claim for, and we have until September 5 to submit that claim. My regular benefit year actually ended last month, so I'm definitely on EB. Thanks everyone for your help!

•Great! Glad you got it sorted out. Just remember to submit that final certification before September 5, and you should receive your final payment a few days after that. If you're going to need additional assistance after your benefits end, now would be a good time to look into other support programs that might be available to you.

Just a final clarification for anyone finding this thread later: - Regular UI: Ends based on your benefit year end date - Extended Benefits: Last week ending August 29, 2025 (must certify by September 5, 2025) - Special pandemic programs: All ended in September 2021 Check your online account to see which program you're currently on. It should show your current program type and benefit year end date on your main dashboard after logging in.
