What is benefit year ending date for NYS Department of Labor unemployment - when does my year reset?
I'm totally confused about this benefit year ending date thing on my unemployment account. My claim started in March 2024 and I've been getting benefits on and off since then. Now I see something about my benefit year ending in March 2025 but I'm not sure what that means exactly? Does that mean I can't get any more unemployment after that date? Do I have to reapply for a whole new claim? I still have money left in my account balance so I'm really worried about losing benefits. Can someone explain how this benefit year ending date actually works with NYS Department of Labor?

Your benefit year is exactly 52 weeks from when you first filed your initial claim. So if you started in March 2024, your benefit year ends in March 2025. After that date, you'll need to file a new initial claim if you're still unemployed and want to continue receiving benefits. The remaining balance from your old claim doesn't carry over - you get a fresh determination based on your wages from the new base period.

•So even if I still have weeks left on my current claim, I lose them when the benefit year ends? That seems really unfair.

yeah this happened to me last year, super confusing. i had like $2000 left but when my benefit year ended i had to start all over again with a new application. took about 3 weeks to get approved for the new claim

•Did your weekly benefit amount change when you filed the new claim? I'm worried mine might go down.

•mine actually went up a little because i had worked more in the new base period they used. but depends on your situation

The key thing to understand is that NYS Department of Labor uses your benefit year ending date to determine eligibility for a new claim. You can file a new claim during the week your benefit year ends, but you cannot collect benefits on both the old and new claim for the same week. If you're still unemployed when your benefit year is about to end, file your new claim right away to avoid any gaps in payments.

•What if you worked during your benefit year but didn't make enough to qualify for a new claim? Do you just lose benefits completely?

•If you don't have sufficient wages in your new base period, you might be able to use an alternate base period. NYS Department of Labor will automatically check this for you when you file. If that doesn't work either, then yes, you wouldn't qualify for a new claim.

Ugh the whole benefit year thing is so unnecessarily complicated. I went through this nightmare last summer when mine ended and I couldn't get through to anyone at NYS Department of Labor to explain what was happening. Spent weeks calling that stupid phone number getting hung up on every time. Finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual agent who walked me through the whole new claim process. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Saved me so much stress and time.

•Never heard of that service before. Did they charge you a lot to help with the call?

•It was worth it just to actually talk to someone who knew what they were doing instead of getting the runaround for weeks

Just a heads up - make sure you keep filing your weekly claims right up until your benefit year ends even if you're planning to file a new claim. Some people stop filing thinking they'll just start fresh, but that can create issues with your payment timeline.

Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences with this - it's really helpful to hear from people who've actually gone through the benefit year ending process. I'm in a similar situation where my year is coming up in a few months and I was getting stressed about potentially losing benefits. It sounds like the key is to file the new claim right when the benefit year ends and not wait. @Anastasia Sokolov that's interesting about the Claimyr service - I might look into that if I can't get through to NYS Department of Labor directly. Has anyone here had success getting through to them on the phone recently or is it still impossible?

•I've been trying to get through to NYS Department of Labor for weeks now and it's basically impossible. The phone lines are constantly busy and when you do get through, you're on hold for hours only to get disconnected. It's really frustrating when you need answers about something as important as your benefit year ending. I think that Claimyr service @Anastasia Sokolov mentioned might be worth looking into just to save the headache of dealing with their phone system.

I just went through this exact situation a few months ago and can confirm what others are saying - you absolutely need to file a new claim when your benefit year ends, even if you have money left. The system doesn't automatically roll you over. One thing I wish someone had told me earlier is that you should file your new claim during the last week of your benefit year, not after it ends. This helps prevent any gaps in payments. Also, gather all your employment info beforehand because you'll need to provide details about any work you did during your benefit year. The new claim uses a different base period to calculate your benefits, so your weekly amount might change. Don't panic if the online system shows confusing information during the transition - it takes a few days to update properly after you file the new claim.

•This is super helpful @Millie Long! I didn't realize you should file during the last week rather than waiting until after it ends. That timing tip could save people from missing payments. Do you remember how long it took for your new claim to be processed and approved? I'm wondering if there's typically a delay between filing and actually receiving benefits on the new claim.

•@Millie Long that s'really good advice about filing during the last week! I m'curious though - when you filed your new claim, did you have to go through the whole identity verification process again? I remember that being such a pain when I first applied and I m'dreading having to do it again if my benefit year ends soon.
