KeyBank debit card issues for NY unemployment - can't access funds for weeks
I've been trying to access my KeyBank unemployment debit card account since the beginning of April and keep hitting a brick wall. The mobile app just shows an error message whenever I try to log in. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app multiple times, clearing cache, even tried using a different phone - nothing works. Called customer service about 6 times over the past 3 weeks. Every time they give me some new "solution" like resetting passwords or verifying my identity AGAIN, but nothing ever fixes it. The last rep told me to wait 24-48 hours for some "system update" but that was 9 days ago. Meanwhile I can't check my balance or transfer my unemployment benefits to my regular bank account. I have bills piling up! Has anyone else dealt with this? Did you find any solution that actually worked? This is getting ridiculous.

omg YES!! Been dealing with this nightmare since March. Their app is complete garbage 🗑️ and their customer service is even worse. I ended up having to physically go to an ATM just to check my balance every few days because the website doesn't work either.

•Did you ever get it fixed? I'm desperate at this point.

•not really tbh. I just gave up and started withdrawing everything as soon as it hits the account. Their tech support is useless.

•I had this same issue! The ATM method is what I've been doing too. This bank is the WORST.

After weeks of frustration with KeyBank, I finally got someone from ny unemployment on the phone using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com). They connected me with an actual person who helped resolve my KeyBank access issues AND sorted out some pending payments at the same time. Talking to an agent got my money unlocked so fast - worth every penny since I couldn't access any of my benefits for almost a month! Here's a video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•wait is this actually real? sounds too good to be true honestly

•Yeah it's 100% real. I was skeptical too but I was desperate after spending hours on hold every day for a week. They call for you and then connect you when a real person picks up.

•how much did they charge??? these services always have some hidden cost that makes it not worth it

•It was the only way I could talk to a live agent after weeks of trying. Considering I got access to my benefits that were just sitting there, it was totally worth it for me.

KeyBank is the absolute WORST bank I've ever dealt with in my entire life. I had similar issues and ended up having to drive 40 minutes to an actual branch location to resolve it. Even then, the guy told me their systems were "transitioning" and that's why so many people were having issues. That was in February and clearly nothing has improved 🤡

Have you tried going through the ny unemployment website instead of directly through KeyBank? Sometimes you can update your payment preferences there and switch to direct deposit instead of the debit card. That's what I did after having similar issues last year.

•I tried that but couldn't get past the verification step. The system kept timing out. Its like they designed everything to fail on purpose.

•ugh thats so frustrating. their whole system seems designed to make it impossible to get YOUR OWN MONEY. took me like 5 attempts before it worked.

For anyone dealing with KeyBank/unemployment issues, here's what I've learned after months of dealing with this system: First, document EVERYTHING. Every call, every rep's name, every "solution" they offer. This helps when you have to escalate issues. Second, try accessing through different methods - sometimes the desktop website works when the app doesn't, or vice versa. Also try different browsers (Chrome vs Firefox vs Safari). Third, if you need to speak with someone quickly, use claimyr.com - it's the only consistent way I've found to get through to a live person who can actually help fix account issues. Fourth, if possible, switch to direct deposit to your personal bank account. The KeyBank debit card system has been plagued with issues for over a year now. Fifth, contact your state representative. Seriously. I did this as a last resort and their office helped escalate my case. Hope this helps someone! The system is broken but there are workarounds.

•This is super helpful, thanks for sharing! Especially the tip about contacting state reps - didn't even think of that.

•I used claimyr.com too after reading recommendations here. Got through to an agent in about 30 mins after spending weeks trying to call myself. They fixed my KeyBank issue and also processed some back payments I was owed!

I swear the whole KeyBank situation is a conspiracy to stop people from accessing their benefits. They make it so complicated on purpose 🤔

•THIS!!! I've been saying this for months. They probably earn interest on all that money sitting in accounts people can't access.

•Nah it's just incompetence. Never attribute to malice what can be explained by stupidity lol

•idk man, seems pretty convenient that the system always breaks right when people need their money the most 🧐

I work in IT (not for keybank lol) and their system is notoriously bad. It's running on legacy infrastructure that was never designed to handle the volume of unemployment claims we've seen in recent years. Best bet is to avoid their app entirely - try calling and requesting a PIN reset for telephone banking instead of using the mobile app.

try calling the unemployment office directly instead of KeyBank! that's what worked for me. the wait time is insane tho 😫

•Use claimyr.com - they'll wait on hold for you and call when someone picks up. Saved me hours of frustration.

KeyBank has been having "technical difficulties" for like 2 years now 🙄 I ended up filing a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and miraculously my issues got fixed within 48 hours after that.

•How do you file a complaint with them? I'm willing to try anything at this point.

•Go to consumerfinance.gov and click on "Submit a Complaint" - you'll need to provide details about the issue and any attempts you've made to resolve it. They contact the bank on your behalf.

its not just you or keybank, the entire ny unemployment system is held together with duct tape and prayers at this point. cant believe we still have to deal with this in 2023.

Literally just got off the phone with KeyBank after THREE HOURS and they told me "sorry we can't help you, contact unemployment" 😤 I'm about to lose my mind. This is the third time they've told me that!

•classic keybank move. they always pass the buck to unemployment while unemployment says it's a keybank issue. endless loop of hell.

Hate to say it but sometimes the only solution is the nuclear option - report your card lost/stolen and request a new one. That's what finally fixed my access issues. Downside is you have to wait for the new card but at least it works when you get it.

•How long did it take to get the replacement card?

•They said 7-10 business days but I got mine in about 5 days. Not ideal but it actually worked when I activated it.

Don't waste your time calling KeyBank. I spent months dealing with the same issue and the ONLY thing that worked was getting through to someone at the actual unemployment office who manually fixed something on their end. Try claimyr.com to get through - worked for me after weeks of failure.

I'm dealing with the exact same nightmare! My KeyBank app has been completely useless for over a month now. Every time I try to log in, it just gives me some generic error message. I've called their customer service line probably 10+ times and each rep tells me something different - "clear your cache," "update the app," "wait 24-48 hours for system maintenance," etc. Nothing ever works! I'm so frustrated because I have rent due and can't even check if my unemployment payment went through. Has anyone had any luck with that Consumer Financial Protection Bureau complaint route that @Luca Conti mentioned? I'm getting desperate here and willing to try anything at this point. This whole system is absolutely broken.

•@DeShawn Washington I feel your pain! I'm going through the exact same thing right now. The CFPB complaint route does seem promising based on what others are saying. I'm also thinking about trying that claimyr service that @Javier Torres and others have mentioned - seems like multiple people here have had success getting through to actual unemployment agents that way. At this point I m'willing to pay a service fee if it means I can actually access my own money! Let me know if you try the CFPB complaint and how it goes.
