Anyone successfully changed their address with NY unemployment? KeyBank keeps sending debit card to wrong place

I relocated in November and I've been trying to get my unemployment debit card sent to my new address since then. It's now March and I'm still without access to my benefits. I've updated my address in my online account and had to go through that whole ID verification process about a month ago. Called KeyBank three times and they keep saying they can only send cards to the address that DOL has on file for me. When I tell them I already updated it with DOL, they say their system doesn't show the update and they need to hear directly from DOL before they can change it. I've tried calling unemployment 20+ times but can never get through to a human. Has anyone else dealt with this address change nightmare? How long did it take for KeyBank to finally get your updated address from DOL? Going on 4 months without my benefits and I'm getting desperate.

I had this same exact problem last year. Moved from Brooklyn to Rochester and it was a complete disaster. What worked for me was calling my local state assembly person's office. They have special contacts at unemployment and can escalate issues. My address was fixed within a week after I talked to them. Def worth a shot if ur still stuck.

Thanks for the suggestion! I hadn't thought of contacting my assembly person. Do you just call their main office number?

0 coins

Yep just call their district office. Most have staff specifically for helping with unemployment issues these days. They'll have you fill out a form with all your info.

This is actually solid advice. My cousin works for a state senator and they handle unemployment issues ALL THE TIME. They can cut through the red tape faster than we can on our own.

After weeks of trying to reach someone at ny unemployment with no luck, I finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got a callback with an actual agent! Talking to a real human was a game changer - they fixed my address issue right there on the call and KeyBank had my new info within 3 days. It was the best money I've spent to get my benefits flowing again. They have a video explaining how it works here: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

wait is this real? I've been trying to reach someone for almost 2 months 😩

0 coins

100% real. I was skeptical too but was desperate after trying for weeks. They basically wait on hold for you then call you when they reach an agent. Saved me like 3 hours of hold time.

0 coins

sounds like one of those ads that pops up everywhere. anyone ACTUALLY try this besides you? how long did it take to get the callback?

0 coins

Got my callback in about 45 mins. Beats the 2+ hours I was spending on hold every time I tried calling myself (only to get disconnected half the time 🤬). Several people on this sub have mentioned using it.

another day, another company promising to fix the unfixable unemployment system lol

Hey I get the skepticism - I felt the same way. But I was at my wit's end and it actually worked for me. Just sharing what helped with my situation 🤷‍♀️

keyBank is the WORST. I had the same problem but it was my married name change that wouldn't update. Took almost 4 months to get resolved. What ended up working for me was going to my account online, changing the address AGAIN, then immediately calling DOL (took like 17 attempts to get through). When I finally reached someone, I asked them to manually push the update to KeyBank and confirm it went through while I was on the phone. The agent was super nice and did it right then.

this happened to me too! what worked for me was going to my local DOL office in person. i brought ID and proof of my new address (utility bill) and they updated it in their system while i was there. the lady told me to wait 5-7 business days for it to update with keybank. sure enough, my new card came about 10 days later. might be worth trying if you can get to an office.

There's a physical office I can go to? I've been doing everything online and by phone. How did you find the location?

0 coins

yep! look up "new york state career center" + your city. they're technically employment centers but they can help with unemployment stuff too. just call ahead to make sure they handle these issues and check if you need an appointment.

0 coins

This depends on where you live tho. I'm in a rural area and our "local" office is 90 minutes away 🙄

You can try reaching out to KeyBank executive customer service. Google "KeyBank executive office" and you'll find a phone number that bypasses the regular customer service. I did this after 2 months of the same runaround and got someone who actually helped. They put me on a conference call with DOL and we got it fixed in one go. Worth trying!

This is actually brilliant. Executive customer service at banks can move mountains that regular CSRs can't. Smart move 👍

Look at your online profile in the NYSDOL website. There are TWO places where address is stored - one under your main profile and another under payment method settings. I had to update BOTH before KeyBank would acknowledge it. The system is ridiculous.

0 coins

WAIT SERIOUSLY?? I had no idea there were two places. Going to check this right now!

0 coins

Yep! Go to Payment Method in your dashboard, then there should be a section that shows your KeyBank info with another address field. The system doesn't tell you that you need to update both 🤦‍♂️

0 coins

OMG I just checked and you're right!!! The address under payment method is still my old one even though I updated my main profile address. Thank you so much!

The NY unemployment system is such garbage. I swear they make it difficult on purpose to reduce how many people can actually access their benefits. I had a similar issue and ended up having to submit a formal complaint with the state attorney general's office before anything happened. That lit a fire under them real quick.

Pro tip: call right when they open at 8am. I got through after only 20 minutes on hold that way. Any later in the day and forget about it. Also, try the Spanish line even if you don't speak Spanish - many agents are bilingual and the wait times are way shorter. Just be polite and they'll usually help you in English.

I second the Spanish line hack!! Worked for me twice when I couldn't get through on the English line for weeks!

I tried calling at 7:59am exactly when they open and STILL got a 40+ minute wait 😡

yeah its hit or miss. monday and tuesday are the worst days to call. try wednesday or thursday early morning

For anyone dealing with KeyBank/DOL address issues, here's what finally worked for me after 3 months of hell: 1. Update your address on your NY.gov account in BOTH places (profile and payment section) 2. Send a secure message through your unemployment dashboard specifically requesting an address update. Reference both your old and new address clearly. 3. Call DOL repeatedly until you get through. Use a service like Claimyr.com if you can't waste hours on hold - they'll call and connect you with an agent. Worth every penny when you're trying to access thousands in benefits. 4. Once you reach a DOL agent, specifically ask them to manually push the address change to KeyBank while you're on the phone. Ask them to confirm when it's done. 5. Wait 5-7 business days, then call KeyBank to verify they received the update before requesting a new card. I know it's frustrating as hell, but persistence is key with these systems. Document everything - names of reps, dates of calls, confirmation numbers. This helps if you need to escalate to a supervisor or elected official's office. Good luck! The system is broken but not impossible.

THANK YOU for this detailed breakdown. Going to follow these steps exactly!

This should be pinned. Best advice on here. 💯

After dealing with this exact issue, I ended up just setting up direct deposit instead of using the KeyBank card. Took effect on my next payment and bypassed the whole KeyBank nightmare. Might be worth looking into if you have a bank account.

0 coins

I'd actually prefer direct deposit! I didn't know that was an option. Did you set that up through the DOL website?

0 coins

NeonNinja

yep! go to payment method in your dashboard and you can switch from debit card to direct deposit. you'll need your bank routing and account numbers. the change usually takes effect within 1-2 payment cycles.

0 coins

Direct deposit is 100% the way to go with NY unemployment. KeyBank is a disaster and has been for years.

i filed for ny unemployment back in january and had a similar issue with address. wat worked for me was tweeting at @nyslabor with my issue (dont include personal info). they responded and asked me to DM them, then got a call from them next day to fix it. worth a shot if nothing else works!

Social media is lowkey the best way to get customer service these days. Companies hate the public callout 😂

I used to work for a state agency (not NY) and here's the inside scoop: these systems are often completely separate databases that sync on a schedule, not in real time. Sometimes the sync fails. When you update your address with DOL, it might take 2-3 business days to sync with KeyBank under normal circumstances. If there's a sync error, it can take forever unless someone manually forces it. Your best bet is getting a human on the phone at DOL who knows how to force the update. Not all agents know how to do this, so you might need to specifically ask for a tier 2 support person or supervisor who has access to the sync tools.

0 coins

This explains SO MUCH about why government systems are so broken. Thanks for the insight!

0 coins

This is really helpful context - I had no idea about the sync issues between systems. I'll specifically ask for tier 2 support.

i finaly got a human on the phone by using claimyr.com after 3 weeks of trying. took 30 min to get an agent instead of the usual 2+ hour wait that ends in a hangup. they helped me update my address and push it through to keybank. got my card a week later. talking to a real person is the only way to fix these issues 😔

0 coins

hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different?

0 coins

Zara Khan

they don't ask for any personal info - all they do is wait on hold and call you when they reach an agent. i was sketched out too but it worked & was the only way i could reach someone

Check if ur mail is being forwarded correctly. Sometimes USPS forwarding doesn't work with certain government mail. My roommate got around the KeyBank issue by having all his mail forwarded properly, so when they sent a card to the "old address" it still reached him. Just another option if ur still trying to fix the DOL side.

after dealing with this nightmare for 5 MONTHS I finally got it resolved by contacting my state senator's office. they have direct contacts at DOL that can fix things like this. don't waste your time with the regular customer service channels - they're useless. go straight to your elected officials!

0 coins

5 MONTHS?? Omg that's insane. I'm definitely going to try the elected official route before I end up in the same boat.
