Filed new claim but ny unemployment website won't let me certify weekly benefits
Just started a new unemployment claim about 10 days ago. The rep on the phone specifically told me to start claiming my weekly benefits this past Sunday. When I tried logging in on Sunday, the system kept giving me error messages saying my claim wasn't active yet. Tried again today (Tuesday) and still getting the same error. The website just loops me back to the login page whenever I try to certify. Already spent 3 hours trying to get someone on the phone with no luck. Anyone know what I'm supposed to do now? My rent is due next week and I'm seriously stressing out.

Same exact thing happened to me! I filed on a Thursday and the guy told me to certify that Sunday. Got the same error message and kept trying for a whole week before I could finally get in. The system takes time to process ur claim, usually 2-3 business days but sometimes a week or more. Keep trying every day and eventually it'll work.

Thanks, that's good to know. Did you ever call them about it or it just started working on its own?

It just strated working on its own. I think the reps tell everyone to certify on Sunday even if the system isn't ready yet 🙄

After spinning my wheels trying to call for days, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me connected to a rep in about 45 mins. They called and waited on hold, then transferred me when a person picked up. Talking to an agent got my benefits flowing within 24 hours. Worth checking out if you're stuck like I was. I also found this helpful video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

yeah it actually does work. i was skeptical too but after spending 8+ hours trying to get through myself, i was desperate. they called for me and i got connected to an agent who fixed my claim on the spot.

Another service promising magic solutions? What makes this one different from all the other scams?

it literally just calls for you and waits on hold so you don't have to. then when someone answers they connect you. simple but effective. not claiming its magic, just saved me hours of hold music 🤷♀️

I tried this too! Best decision ever. Was able to get my issue fixed in one call after weeks of trying on my own.

i had to wait almost 2 weeks after filing before the system would let me certify. the whole process is super broken. the rep who took my claim said one thing but the computer system does another. typical government efficiency lol.

Try logging in at different times. The website is super glitchy around 8-10am when everyone's trying to certify. I found better luck late at night like after 10pm when there's less traffic. Also try clearing your cache and cookies or using a different browser.

This happened to me 3 months ago!!!! THE SOLUTION: When you file a new claim, there's actually a 1 week waiting period before you can claim benefits. The reps never mention this!! So you gotta wait until the SECOND Sunday after you file to claim. The first week is basically a freebie for the state where u get nothing. It's totally messed up but that's how it works.

This is the correct answer 💯 The waiting week trips everyone up.

What?? The lady specifically told me to claim THIS Sunday, not next Sunday. Why would she tell me that if it's not possible??

because half the reps don't know what they're talking about or they're reading from scripts. trust me, ur first eligible week will start the Sunday AFTER you filed, and you'll certify for it the following Sunday.

The waiting week was waived during covid but they brought it back last year. A lot of the older reps forget about it cuz they got used to the covid rules.

Here's exactly what you need to do to fix this problem with NY unemployment: First, understand what's happening: There's often a delay between when you file a claim and when the system actually processes it and makes it available for certification. This isn't what the reps tell you, but it's how the system works. Options to resolve this: 1. Wait another 3-4 business days. Many times the system just needs time to process your claim fully. 2. Try accessing the system during off-peak hours (very early morning or late night). 3. If you urgently need this resolved, you'll need to speak with a rep. The fastest way to reach someone is through Claimyr.com - they'll call NYSDOL for you, wait on hold, and connect you when a rep answers. This saved me days of frustration. 4. Make sure you're using the correct login credentials and that you're going to the weekly certification page (not just checking your claim status). 5. Check if your claim shows as "pending" or "processing" anywhere in your account. If you do get through to a rep, ask them to specifically check if your claim is fully processed in the system and ready for certification. Sometimes they need to flip a switch on their end. Good luck! The system is frustrating but once you get it working, the weekly certifications usually go smoothly after that.

Thanks for the detailed response! I'll try the off-peak hours tonight and if that doesn't work I might try that Claimyr thing tomorrow.

anybody else think the whole NY unemployment system is designed to be confusing on purpose? like they make it hard to claim so people just give up 🤬

ALL FACTS. They save millions by making it so frustrating people abandon their claims.

nah fam this is deliberate. the website works perfectly when you need to PAY them something but breaks down when they need to PAY YOU

check your email spam folder. sometimes they send u an email saying your claim needs additional info before u can certify but it goes to spam.

did u verify ur identity yet? they might be waiting for u to do id.me verification. they dont tell u this but sometimes u cant certify until that's done

the website is trash. call the automated phone system for claiming weekly benefits: 1-888-581-5812. sometimes the phone system works when the website doesn't.

this is the best advice here. the phone system is ancient but way more reliable than their website
