NY unemployment claim showing 'pending' status - can't claim weekly benefits online
I filed a new NY unemployment claim last week and the representative told me I should claim every Sunday, but the website isn't giving me that option at all. I log in and there's literally no button or link to certify for weekly benefits. The system just shows my claim is 'pending' with no other information. I've called every phone number I can find but can't get through to anyone. The automated system doesn't help at all. Has this happened to anyone else? How long do I have to wait for the pending status to change? I really need to start receiving benefits soon.

This happens a lot with new claims. Your claim is still being processed, which is why it shows as 'pending.' You can't certify for weekly benefits until your initial claim is approved. The system won't show you the certification option until then. It typically takes 2-3 weeks for a new claim to be processed, though sometimes longer if there's information they need to verify with your employer.

•Thanks for explaining! The lady I spoke with definitely didn't mention this part. Do you know if I'll be able to claim for these weeks I'm missing once the pending status goes away? I'm worried about losing those weeks of benefits.

•Did you get paid for those weeks you couldn't claim? That's what I'm most worried about right now.

The pending status means your claim is still under review. During this time, you cannot certify weekly. However, once approved, you WILL be able to certify retroactively for any weeks since your initial filing date. If your claim remains pending for more than 3 weeks, you should try to speak with a representative. I know you mentioned trouble getting through on the phone - that's unfortunately common. The NYSDOL phone system is notoriously difficult to navigate, especially during high-volume periods. I recommend calling exactly at 8:00 AM when their lines open or trying throughout the day on Wednesday or Thursday when call volumes tend to be slightly lower.

•Thank you so much for the detailed information! I'll definitely try calling right when they open. I've been calling midday which is probably the worst time.

This waiting game is RIDICULOUS!! I had the exact same problem in February and my claim was stuck on "pending" for FIVE WEEKS with no explanation! The DOL expects us to survive on what exactly while they take their sweet time?? And good luck trying to reach anyone - I called over 70 TIMES before I got through to a human being who could actually help me.

•Omg I think I would lose my mind waiting 5 weeks!! Did u ever find out why it took so long??

•They said it was because my employer didn't respond to their inquiry fast enough, which is SUCH garbage because I was laid off with 50 other people at once. How hard is it to verify that?? The whole system is designed to make you give up, I swear.

I had this same issue last month and was getting desperate to talk to someone. After days of calling and getting nowhere, I tried Claimyr (claimyr.com) and actually got through to a rep in about 20 minutes. They have this automated system that waits on hold for you and calls you when a real person answers. Saved me days of frustration. Here's a video of how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE Anyway, once I got through, the rep explained my claim was pending because they needed additional wage verification. She expedited it and I could claim weekly benefits within 2 days. Without getting that cleared up, I might have been waiting for weeks.

•I've never heard of that service before. It really worked? I'm so desperate at this point I'll try anything to get this resolved.

•Yes, it definitely worked for me. The representative I reached was able to see exactly why my claim was pending and fixed it on the spot. Worth every penny not to spend hours redialing and listening to that same automated message over and over.

•That's good to know. The website is so confusing, I wasn't sure if 'pending' was the only status I should expect to see or if there would be other statuses. Thank you!

My husband had this problem and we were panicking because we have bills due next week! He found out they needed ID verification even though no one told him. Check your message inbox on the unemployment site, sometimes they send notices there but don't email you about them!

•I didn't even know there was a message inbox! I'll check that right now, thank you for the tip!

Just wanted to add: make sure you're checking both your NY.gov message inbox AND your email that's registered with your account. Sometimes urgent notices go to one but not the other. Also, while your claim is pending, document your work search activities anyway, as you'll need to report those for any back-certification periods once your claim is approved.

•I checked both places and didn't see any messages asking for additional information. I've been keeping track of my job search activities in a notebook, so I should be good there. I appreciate all the help everyone!

Quick update check - has there been any change to your claim status? Sometimes they process claims in batches toward the end of the week, so you might see movement by Friday.

•No changes yet, still showing as pending. I'm going to try calling first thing tomorrow morning as suggested. If that doesn't work, I might try that Claimyr service someone mentioned. I really can't afford to wait much longer without knowing what's happening with my claim.

I went through this exact same situation about 6 months ago and it's so stressful not knowing what's happening! A few things that helped me: First, try logging in at different times of day - sometimes the system updates overnight and you might see changes in the morning. Second, if you do get through to someone on the phone, ask them specifically what documentation they need and if there's a way to upload it online instead of mailing it (saves time). Third, keep a record of every time you call with the date and time - if you end up needing to escalate later, having that documentation helps. Hang in there, it does get resolved eventually even though it feels endless right now!

•This is really helpful advice, thank you! I hadn't thought about checking at different times of day to see if there are any updates. I'll definitely start keeping a log of my calls too - that's a smart idea. It's reassuring to hear from someone who went through the same thing and came out the other side. The waiting and not knowing is definitely the worst part!

I'm dealing with this exact same issue right now - filed my claim 10 days ago and it's still showing pending with no option to certify weekly benefits. It's so frustrating because I was told I could start claiming right away, but clearly that's not how it actually works. Reading through these comments is really helpful though - at least I know I'm not alone and that it's normal for new claims to take a few weeks to process. I'm going to try calling right at 8 AM tomorrow and see if I can get through to someone who can tell me specifically what's holding up my claim. Has anyone had luck getting through on the phone recently, or is it still impossible to reach a human?

•I've been trying to get through on the phone for the past week and it's been really hit or miss. I had some luck calling right at 8 AM on Wednesday - got through after about 45 minutes on hold. The rep was able to tell me that my claim was just waiting for standard employer verification, which was reassuring to know. I'd definitely recommend trying first thing in the morning like others have suggested. Also, don't give up if you get disconnected - I had to call back three times before I stayed connected long enough to reach someone. The waiting is awful but knowing there's actually a reason for the delay helps with the anxiety!

I'm going through the exact same thing right now! Filed my claim about a week and a half ago and it's been stuck on pending status ever since. Like you, I was told I could start certifying right away, but there's literally no option to do it on the website. It's such a relief to read all these responses and know this is actually normal for new claims - the person who processed my application definitely didn't explain that part clearly. I've been calling every day but haven't gotten through yet. Going to try the 8 AM strategy tomorrow and also check my message inbox like someone suggested. Thanks for posting this question - it's really helpful to see everyone's experiences and know that the benefits will be backdated once it's approved!

•I'm in the same boat as you and the original poster! Filed my claim about 2 weeks ago and still showing pending. It's such a relief to find this thread because I was starting to panic thinking I did something wrong. The lack of clear communication from NYSDOL about what "pending" actually means is really frustrating - they should tell people upfront that new claims take time to process before you can certify. I'm going to try calling at 8 AM sharp tomorrow too. Fingers crossed we all get through soon and can get our claims moving! At least now I know to expect the retroactive payments once it's approved.

I'm dealing with this exact same situation! Filed my claim about 2 weeks ago and it's still stuck on pending with no weekly certification option available. Reading through all these responses has been incredibly helpful - I had no idea this was normal for new claims. The representative who helped me file definitely didn't explain that there would be a waiting period before I could start certifying. I've been calling daily but haven't gotten through yet. Planning to try the 8 AM strategy tomorrow and also going to check my message inbox thoroughly since I hadn't even known that existed. It's so reassuring to know that once approved, we'll be able to backdate and claim for all the weeks we've missed. Thank you everyone for sharing your experiences - it really helps to know we're not alone in this frustrating process!

•I'm in the exact same situation too! Filed my claim 9 days ago and have been checking the website multiple times a day hoping to see some change. It's so frustrating when you're told one thing during the application process but the reality is completely different. I've been trying to call but keep getting that automated message saying call volumes are too high. Reading everyone's experiences here has definitely eased my anxiety - at least now I know this waiting period is totally normal and not something I messed up. Going to try the early morning calling strategy tomorrow and cross my fingers. Thanks for sharing your story, it really helps to know there are others going through this same process right now!

•Same here! Filed my claim about 10 days ago and have been in this pending limbo ever since. It's honestly such a relief to find this thread because I was starting to think I had somehow messed up my application. The whole process is so confusing and they really don't explain what to expect during the waiting period. I've been calling repeatedly but can't get past that automated message about high call volumes. Definitely going to try calling right at 8 AM tomorrow like everyone suggests. It's actually kind of comforting to see so many people dealing with the exact same situation - at least we know we're not alone in this frustrating process! Fingers crossed we all get our claims approved soon.

I'm dealing with this exact same issue right now! Filed my unemployment claim about 12 days ago and it's still showing as pending with absolutely no option to certify for weekly benefits. Like so many others here, I was told during the application process that I could start claiming right away, but clearly that's not how it actually works. It's been really stressful not knowing what's happening or how long this will take. Reading through all these responses has been incredibly helpful and reassuring - I had no idea that waiting 2-3 weeks for a new claim to process was completely normal. The NYSDOL really needs to do a better job explaining this upfront instead of leaving people in the dark wondering if they did something wrong. I've been trying to call daily but keep getting that automated message about high call volumes. Based on everyone's advice here, I'm definitely going to try calling right at 8 AM tomorrow and also check my message inbox thoroughly since I didn't even know that existed. It's such a relief to know that once the claim is approved, we'll be able to backdate and claim for all the weeks we've missed during this pending period. •I'm in the exact same boat! Filed my claim 13 days ago and still stuck on pending status. It's so frustrating how they tell you one thing during the application but then you're left wondering if you did something wrong. This thread has been a lifesaver - I was starting to panic thinking my claim got lost in the system or something. The fact that so many of us are dealing with this at the same time really shows how common this waiting period is for new claims. I've also been calling daily with no luck getting through. Definitely going to try the 8 AM strategy tomorrow too. Thanks for sharing your experience - it really does help to know we're all going through this together!

•I'm dealing with this exact same thing too! Filed my claim about 9 days ago and have been refreshing that website probably 20 times a day hoping something would change. It's such a relief to find all of you going through the same process - I was seriously starting to think I had done something wrong or that my application got lost somewhere in their system. The most frustrating part is how they tell you during the phone interview that you can start claiming weekly benefits right away, but then you log in and there's absolutely nothing there! No explanation, no timeline, just "pending" with no other details. I've tried calling so many times but that automated system is impossible to get through. Definitely going to try the 8 AM strategy tomorrow based on what everyone's saying here. Also had no idea about the message inbox - going to check that right now! Thanks for posting about this - it's honestly such a weight off my shoulders knowing this waiting period is completely normal and that we'll all be able to get those backdated payments once everything goes through. This community is amazing for sharing real experiences like this!
