NY unemployment system glitches causing filing issues for some but not others - what's going on?

I've been trying to file my weekly NY unemployment claim since Sunday but keep running into weird system errors. The website keeps timing out or showing error messages like 'service unavailable' when I try to certify. But my cousin filed yesterday with zero problems! Is anyone else experiencing these random issues? I've tried different browsers, cleared my cache, even used my phone instead of computer. Nothing works consistently. My benefits will expire soon if I can't get through! Are there certain times of day that work better for filing? This is seriously stressing me out.

This seems to be happening to a lot of people right now. There's no clear pattern to who's affected. I work at a career center and have been hearing about this all week from different clients. Some things that have helped: 1. Try filing between 7-8pm or early morning (5-7am) when server load is lower 2. Use Chrome in incognito mode with no extensions running 3. Make sure your address and personal info is EXACTLY as it appears on your initial claim 4. If you get an error, wait 30 minutes before trying again (multiple rapid attempts can trigger security blocks) The NYSDOL system is likely experiencing higher than normal traffic due to the recent wave of seasonal layoffs. They haven't officially acknowledged any issues yet though.

Thank you! I'll try the off-peak hours tonight. I'm hoping that works because my rent is due next week and I'm counting on this payment. Has anyone heard if there's a grace period for certifications when the system is having these kinds of problems?

If you're having persistent issues certifying online, you should call NYSDOL directly. I know it's frustrating but it's the most reliable way to ensure your benefits don't lapse. I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) last month when I had a similar issue and they got me connected to an agent within 30 minutes instead of spending days redialing. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE - seriously saved my sanity.

The system is definitely having issues. I'm a software dev and can tell you that these government systems struggle with peak usage times. It's not just you - my wife has had no issues but I keep getting timeout errors. It's probably a load balancing problem on their backend. Try clearing your cookies completely or using a completely different device.

I HAVE BEEN DEALING WITH THIS FOR 3 WEEKS NOW!!!! First they said my claim needed "additional review" then the site wouldn't let me certify, then when I finally got through on the phone the agent said everything looked fine on their end!!! How can it look fine when I'M NOT GETTING PAID??? This system is DESIGNED to be difficult so people give up. My landlord doesn't care about their technical difficulties!

Have you tried the automated phone certification system? Call 1-888-581-5812 for touch-tone phones or 1-888-783-1370 for voice recognition. Sometimes the phone system works when the website is having issues. Make sure you have your PIN ready.

Update: I tried filing at 5:30am this morning and it worked! The website was much faster and I didn't get any errors. For anyone else struggling, definitely try during off-peak hours. I also used Chrome incognito mode as suggested above.

my friend at work said they heard its cuz theyre updating the system for the new 2025 benefit amounts and thats why its glitchy lol maybe thats whats happening

That's possible. Government systems often have issues during updates or maintenance. But they usually announce scheduled maintenance in advance. More likely it's just overloaded servers due to high volume. The NY unemployment system has been using the same core technology since 2010 with only minor upgrades.

Just a reminder for everyone: If you're unable to certify due to technical issues, document your attempts (screenshots of errors, notes of when you tried, etc). If you end up with a gap in payments, you can request backpay by submitting this documentation along with Form TC-1.5 Request for Backdated Claim Credit. Also, NYSDOL has confirmed they won't consider claims abandoned due to the current technical issues, but you should still try to certify as soon as you can get through.

This is super helpful info! I took screenshots of the errors just in case. Is there a time limit for submitting that backdated claim form if needed?

You have up to 7 days after your regular certification day to submit without needing the backdated claim form. After that, you have 30 days to submit the TC-1.5 form with documentation. Beyond 30 days gets more complicated and requires special approval.

And GOOD LUCK getting special approval!!! I waited 9 WEEKS last year for them to "review" my case when THEIR system messed up my claim. Nobody cares that people have bills to pay!!!

I called NYSDOL this morning and they confirmed they're experiencing "intermittent system performance issues" affecting some accounts but not others. The representative said they're working on it but didn't have an ETA for a fix. She recommended trying during non-peak hours (before 8am or after 7:30pm) and said if you're still having issues by this weekend, you should call the claims center directly for help with manual certification.

Thank you for sharing this! At least they're acknowledging there's a problem. I managed to get through early this morning but it's good to know about the manual certification option if it happens again.
