< Back to New York Unemployment

Been waiting almost 2 years for ny unemployment after wage verification - no response!

I sent in my wage verification forms back in March 2022 (nearly 2 years ago!) and STILL haven't received a single payment. I've been calling every single day, sometimes 15-20 times a day and hitting redial like it's my new full-time job. The few times I've actually gotten through to a human, all they tell me is "there's no timeframe we can give you" and basically brush me off. I've tried emailing, sending messages through the portal, and even tried contacting my local representative. Nothing has worked. My savings are completely drained at this point. Does ANYONE know how to actually get some movement on this? I'm desperate here.

Gabriel Freeman

Same thing happened to my cousin! He waited 19 months for them to verify his wages from his contract work. Absolute garbage how they treat people. The system is designed to make u give up.

After trying to call ny unemployment for weeks with no luck, I found this service called Claimyr that calls for you and connects you with an agent when they pick up. Seriously life changing - I finally got someone on the phone who could actually help me. They got my wage verification processed within a week after I'd been waiting for months! Best decision I've made during this whole unemployment nightmare. Check it out: claimyr.com or watch how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

sounds like another scammy service trying to profit off desperate people... does this actually work? πŸ€”

Not a scam at all! I was skeptical too but it worked exactly as promised. They just call for you and stay on hold so you don't have to. When an agent picks up, they connect you. Talking to a real person got my issue resolved after months of getting nowhere.

wait so how does this actually work? do they just call and wait on hold for you?

Laura Lopez

Yep thats exactly it. You tell them which dept you need, they dial and wait on hold (sometimes for hours), and when a human finally answers they connect the call to your phone. Saved me from wasting entire days on hold.

im so desperate at this point I'll try anything. Been on hold for 3+ hours every day this week with nothing to show for it.

I used it too after 6 months of trying to get thru. Actually worked and got my back pay finally. The unemployment system is such a joke they force people to pay for services just to access basic help πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ

Welcome to the club 😭 I waited 14 months for my wage verification to be processed. What finally worked for me was contacting my state senator's office - they have special contacts at unemployment and can sometimes push things through. Don't give up!

Debra Bai

Thanks, I'll try that. Did you just call their office or was there a specific person you talked to?

Called the office and asked to speak with whoever handles constituent services. They had me fill out a form authorizing them to inquire about my case. Took about 3 weeks but they got it moving!

I'll do that tomorrow. At this point I'll try literally anything.

Can u show up in person anywhere? When phones and emails fail sometimes physically being there is the only way. NY unemployment is the absolute worst.

They closed all the unemployment offices during covid and never reopened them. The closest thing is career centers but they can't help with claims 🀑

Thats so messed up! They make it impossible to get help on purpose.

The NY unemployment system is DELIBERATELY broken. They hope you'll just give up and go away. My advice: First, document EVERYTHING. Every call, every email, names of reps you talk to. Second, file an official complaint with the DOL Inspector General - google the form. Third, reach out to local news stations - they love these stories. Fourth, contact your state rep AND senator AND assembly person. Fifth, if you need to actually get someone on the phone without waiting all day, use claimyr.com - they call for you and connect when a human picks up. Saved me so much time and frustration. Don't give up! The system is designed to wear you down but be MORE persistent than they are stubborn!

THIS!!! πŸ‘†πŸ‘†πŸ‘† Persistence is key. Took me 11 months but I finally got $17k in backpay.

Thank you for this detailed plan. I've been documenting everything but haven't tried the DOL Inspector General yet. Will definitely try that next.

The news station tip works! My sister got her claim fixed in 2 weeks after a local reporter contacted them for a story. Amazing how fast they move when threatened with bad publicity πŸ˜’

omg 23 months?? that should be illegal! Have u tried signing into ur account online to see if theres any messages or requests for additional info? Sometimes they need something but dont tell u and just let ur claim sit there.

I'm going through the exact same thing but only been waiting 7 months. It's absolutely infuriating. I don't have any advice but just want you to know you're not alone in this hellscape.

Thanks for the solidarity. Just knowing others are dealing with this too helps somehow. Hope yours gets resolved soon!

you need to be the squeaky wheel. Call your state senator AND assembly person AND local representative AND the governor's office. Make yourself impossible to ignore. I was in the same boat (18 month wait) and this is what finally worked.

Not sure if this will help you but my friend was in a similar situation and she found out they were sending mail to her old address even though she updated it in the system. Might be worth checking if that's happening to you too?

0 coins

-

Debra Bai

I never thought of that! I did move about 6 months after filing but updated my address. Will definitely check on this.

Yeah their system is so glitchy sometimes it looks like address is updated but isn't actually changed in all their databases. Hope this helps!

Former DOL employee here (not in NY tho). Wage verification backlogs are insane right now everywhere. What might help is sending in your documentation AGAIN but marking it as "2ND SUBMISSION - URGENT" on every page. Also if you have pay stubs, tax forms, and employer contact info, send ALL of it, even if redundant.

0 coins

-

Debra Bai

Thank you! I'll definitely try this. Should I send it through the portal or is regular mail better?

0 coins

-

Ryder Greene

Both! Cover all your bases. And on the portal, start a new message thread rather than replying to an old one. New threads sometimes get prioritized differently.

does anyone know if the governors office can help with this kinda stuff? feel like we need to start going over the unemployment offices heads at this point

I tried that route. They just redirect u back to DOL πŸ™„ circular reference error lol

what did you do for income during those 23 months? just curious how anyone survives this kind of wait... πŸ˜“

0 coins

-

Debra Bai

Burned through savings, maxed credit cards, did gig work where possible, and borrowed from family. It's been absolutely devastating financially.

im so sorry man. this system is a disgrace. hope you get your backpay soon and can start rebuilding.

Have you tried the Ombudsman? NY has one specifically for unemployment issues. Google 'NY unemployment ombudsman office' - they're supposed to help with cases that fall through the cracks.

Lawyer up dude. After my 15 month wait I got an attorney who specializes in unemployment and suddenly my case started moving. Many will work on contingency if you have significant backpay due.

Do you have the name of the attorney you used? I'm in a similar situation.

Can't post contact info here but search for employment lawyers who handle admin hearings in NY. Most offer free consultations.

this is why i dont understand why people say unemployment is some kind of 'free money'. the system makes it IMPOSSIBLE to actually get the benefits that we PAID INTO with our taxes. its a scam.

what kind of wage verification did they ask for? i had a similar issue and realized they needed a specific form filled out by my previous employer not just my pay stubs

0 coins

-

Debra Bai

They wanted the employer verification form plus my last 3 pay stubs. Sent it all certified mail and uploaded to the portal too. Still nothing.

I hate to say this but the only thing that worked for me was getting through to an actual person on the phone who could look at my file. Calling is Hell but claimyr.com saves so much time - they call and wait on hold for you, then connect you when someone picks up. I got through on my first try after months of failing. Worth every penny since I got $12k in backpay.

it does! i was skeptical too but desperate after 7 months of no unemployment. had a live agent on the phone within an hour. they immediately found the problem with my claim (it was stuck in some random verification queue).

File a complaint with the NY State Attorney General. I know someone who did this and suddenly unemployment was VERY interested in resolving their case quickly. Worth a shot.

Check if ur claim status says 'pending' or 'in process' online... if it says pending for that long something is definitely wrong and you should reapply completely. If it says 'in process' then keep pushing. The system is absolutely broken.

0 coins

-

Debra Bai

It's been showing 'under review' for 23 months. I'm afraid to reapply and start the clock all over again.

under review for 23 months is 100% a glitch in their system. definitely need to talk to someone. have you tried calling right when they open? thats when i finally got through
