14 weeks with claim stuck in Tax & Wage dept - no updates from ESD
I'm seriously at the end of my rope here. I filed my initial ESD claim back on January 15th, 2025 (so about 14 weeks ago) and I've been in this endless Tax & Wage department limbo since February 11th. My claim needed a redetermination and apparently that's where it's been collecting dust for over 2 months. I've tried EVERYTHING. Called the 6022 number probably 50+ times, and when I miraculously get through, all I hear is "we don't have a timeline, it's when they can get to it" and "it's still with Tax & Wage department." No further explanation. No updates. NOTHING. I even called the governor's office twice (desperate times...) and they basically told me they can't help anymore - they're not putting in any additional "expedited requests" whatever that means. My savings are completely gone now. I've borrowed from everyone I can, and I'm about to miss another rent payment. Does anyone know ANY other avenues I can try? Is there some special email or contact that actually gets responses? A supervisor I should ask for? I don't know what else to do at this point.

Unfortunately, the Tax & Wage department is notorious for these kinds of delays. They're basically reviewing your past wages and employment history to confirm your benefit eligibility. Since you mentioned a "redetermination," there might have been an issue with your original monetary determination. A few things that might help: 1. Contact your state representative or senator's office (not just the governor). They often have ESD liaisons who can inquire about specific cases. 2. File a formal complaint through the ESD website. Sometimes this triggers an internal review. 3. Request a "hardship expedition" specifically - mention your rent situation and lack of income. Use those exact words when you call. 4. Check your ESD account online daily - sometimes they request additional documentation but the notification emails get lost.

•Thank you for these suggestions. I didn't know about the "hardship expedition" terminology - I'll definitely use that exact wording next time I call. And I hadn't thought about contacting my state rep instead of the governor's office. Do you happen to know if the formal complaint on the ESD website actually goes to a different department? I'm worried it'll just end up in the same black hole.

•11 weeks?! That's awful but honestly makes me feel slightly better knowing I'm not alone. Did anything finally break the logjam for you or did it just randomly get processed one day?

•it was so random!! i called on a tuesday and got the same "we dont have a timeline" garbage and then literally the next morning i woke up to an email saying my claim was processed! no explanation, nothing. just suddenly fixed. the system is so messed up!

The Tax & Wage department is seriously understaffed right now. I know that doesn't help your immediate situation, but it explains why so many claims are backed up. One thing to try - sometimes if you call the main ESD number (not the claims number) and specifically ask for a Tier 3 specialist, you might get someone who can actually see what's happening with your claim rather than just reading the same status note everyone else sees. Also, in my experience, calling right when they open at 8am gives you the best chance of getting through. The hold times are usually shortest then.

•Thanks for the tip about asking for a Tier 3 specialist - I've never heard of that before. Is there a specific phone number I should call to reach them? And do I just straight up ask for a "Tier 3 specialist" or is there some other terminology I should use?

•You can call the main ESD customer service line (not the claims center). When the automated system asks why you're calling, say "speak to an agent" and when you get someone, immediately ask if you can speak with a Tier 3 specialist about a claim that's been in Tax & Wage review for over 14 weeks. They might transfer you or take your info for a callback. Not guaranteed to work, but worth a try.

After weeks of trying to get through to ESD about my adjudication issue, I finally used a service called Claimyr. It got me through to an actual ESD agent in less than an hour after I spent WEEKS trying on my own. They have a video demo of how it works at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. The website is claimyr.com if you want to check it out. It was the only thing that worked for me after trying everything else.

•I've never heard of this before. How exactly does it work? Does it just keep dialing for you automatically or something?

•It basically handles the calling/waiting part for you. It calls ESD and navigates the phone menu, then when it reaches a real person, it calls your phone to connect you. Saved me from having to redial manually 50+ times. For a claim stuck as long as yours, it might be worth trying.

this whole system is DESIGNED to make people give up!!!!! i waited 9 weeks last year and when i finally got through they said they "lost" my documents twice even tho i uploaded them to my eservices account and had confirmation numbers. they dont care at all about us. the governor should be ashamed of how this agency treats people.

•It definitely FEELS like they want us to give up sometimes. Did you ever get your claim resolved? I'm starting to worry mine will never get processed.

•eventually yeah but only after i contacted my state representative. still took another 3 weeks after that but at least something happened. the rep's office sent me an email with who they contacted at esd so i had an actual name for once. the regular esd people just read from scripts and have no real power to help.

I went through something similar last year with the Tax & Wage department. I found out later that the issue was my employer hadn't properly reported my wages to ESD for the last quarter I worked. If your former employer is the problem, you might try contacting their HR department directly to see if they've properly submitted everything ESD requested from them. In my case, there was a form my employer needed to complete that they had ignored, and my claim couldn't move forward without it. Once they finally submitted it, my claim was processed within a week.

•That's a really good point I hadn't considered. I worked for a small company that went out of business (hence the unemployment claim), so I'm not sure who would even handle this now. Do you know if there's a way I can find out if this is the issue in my case?

•If your employer went out of business, that could definitely be complicating things. When a business closes, ESD often has to verify things manually since they can't just contact the employer. For closed businesses, the Tax & Wage department has to verify through state business records and final tax filings, which adds extra time. Next time you call, specifically ask if your claim is delayed due to "employer verification issues with a closed business" - that might get you more specific information about what's happening.

I hate to say it, but 14 weeks is a long time even by ESD standards. If nobody is giving you a straight answer, you might want to consider filing for an adjudicative hearing. You have the right to appeal the "non-action" on your claim. It sounds extreme, but sometimes filing the appeal paperwork is what finally gets someone to look at your claim. Go to your eServices account, look for the "Submit an Appeal" option, and in your explanation say you're appealing the unreasonable delay in processing your redetermination. Include that it's been 14 weeks, you're facing eviction, and you've made multiple attempts to resolve it through normal channels. This creates a formal legal timeline that ESD has to respond to. I've seen it work when nothing else would.

•I didn't realize I could appeal a delay - I thought appeals were only for denials. This is really helpful! I'm going to try this right away. How long did the appeal process take in the cases you've seen? I'm worried this will just add more waiting time.

•In my experience, just filing the appeal often gets results before you even get to an actual hearing. Once you file it, someone has to review it to prepare for the hearing, which means they finally look at your claim. I've seen claims suddenly get processed within 1-2 weeks after filing an appeal. The system prioritizes appeals because they have legal deadlines attached to them.

UPDATE: I tried calling the main ESD number this morning at exactly 8:00am and asked for a Tier 3 specialist like someone suggested. After being transferred twice, I finally got someone who actually gave me some useful information! Apparently my former employer's final quarterly tax report showed different wages than what I reported on my application. Since the company went out of business, they're having trouble verifying which numbers are correct. The agent put a note in my file flagging it as a hardship case and said a specialist would review it within 5 business days. I'm also going to try the Claimyr service that was mentioned and file that appeal just to cover all bases. Thank you all for the suggestions - this has been the most progress I've made in months!

•That's great news! When there's a wage discrepancy involving a closed business, having it marked as a hardship case can make a big difference. One more tip: if you have any pay stubs, W-2s, or bank statements showing deposits that can verify your wages, upload those to your eServices account right away. That can speed up the verification process.
