ESD claim stuck 'pending' for 8 weeks - considering calling governor's office

I'm at my wit's end. My unemployment claim has been 'pending' for 8 WEEKS now with zero movement. I've called ESD at least 40 times (no exaggeration) and either get disconnected or told 'someone will call you back' which never happens. I've sent 6 messages through eServices that have all been ignored. My rent is already late and I'm about to lose my apartment. I've heard that contacting the governor's office can sometimes get ESD to actually look at your claim. Has anyone tried this? How many more weeks should I wait before going that route? I'm desperate but don't want to seem like I'm overreacting if this is just how the system works now.

dont wait!! call the governors office NOW. the system is broken and they dont care about us regular ppl. i waited 12 weeks last year and nothing happened until i did this. my claim was magically fixed 3 days after i complained to governor's office.

Wow, really? Did you call or email them? I'm nervous about seeming like I'm making too big a deal about this, but I literally can't pay my bills anymore.

Before you call the governor, have you tried contacting your state representative? That's what worked for me. Find your district rep at leg.wa.gov and send them an email explaining your situation. They often have staff dedicated to helping constituents with ESD issues and can sometimes get things moving faster than going straight to the governor's office.

I hadn't thought of that! That's a great idea. I'll look up my rep right now. Did it take long for them to respond to you?

I heard back within 2 days, and my claim was resolved about a week later. Just make sure you include your claim ID number, contact info, and a clear timeline of what's happened so far. Good luck!

Eight weeks is definitely too long to be stuck in pending status without explanation. Before escalating to the governor's office, I would recommend trying Claimyr to get through to an actual ESD agent. It's a service that basically waits on hold for you and then calls you when an agent is available. I was skeptical but tried it after being stuck for 6 weeks in adjudication. Got through to a real person who fixed my issue in one call. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 It's worth trying before going the political route, which can sometimes take longer depending on how busy their constituent services are.

Thanks for this suggestion! I've never heard of this service but I'm definitely going to look into it. At this point I'll try anything that might help. Did they explain why your claim was stuck when you finally got through?

Yes! Turns out there was a simple flag on my account because my former employer had contested my hours (which was incorrect). The agent was able to verify my information and remove the flag immediately. The frustrating part was that this 5-minute fix took 6 weeks because I couldn't reach anyone. Hope it works for you!

I work at WorkSource and assist people with ESD claims regularly. Here's what I recommend in order of escalation: 1. First use the eServices secure message system (which you've done) 2. Call the claims center repeatedly (which you've done) 3. Try contacting the Technical Support line instead of the Claims line - sometimes they can transfer you to claims 4. Contact your state representative's office (as suggested above) 5. Contact the governor's office as a last resort In your case, since you've already waited 8 weeks and tried the first two steps multiple times, it's completely reasonable to escalate to steps 3-5 now. This isn't normal processing time, even with current backlogs.

Thank you for laying it out so clearly! I didn't know the technical support line might be able to transfer me - I'll try that tomorrow. If that doesn't work, I'll contact my state rep. Really appreciate the insider perspective.

im in the same boat!!! 9 weeks pending and about to be evicted. the whole system is rigged against us. my friend had to go to the local ESD office in person and refused to leave until they helped him. not saying thats what u should do but...... sometimes u gotta be the squeaky wheel lol

Ugh, I'm sorry you're going through this too! I didn't realize you could go to an office in person - do you know if they're actually open to the public now? I thought most were still appointment-only after COVID.

i think it depends on the office. my friend went to the one in tacoma. he said u need an appointment BUT he just showed up and explained his situation to the security guard who let him talk to someone. might be worth trying if ur desperate enough

When my claim was stuck last year I called my state senator's office AND the governor on the same day. The senator's office actually called me back within hours and had someone from ESD contact me the next day. My issue was fixed within 48 hours after that. Don't feel bad about escalating - that's literally what their constituent services are for!

Just wanted to mention - make sure you're still filing your weekly claims even while your initial claim is pending! I made this mistake and it caused even more delays. If your initial claim eventually gets approved, you'll only get backpay for weeks you properly claimed.

Yes, I've been religiously filing every week! That's actually making it even more frustrating because I keep hoping each week will be the one where something changes, but nothing does. Thanks for the reminder though - it's definitely important!

Any update on your situation? Did you try contacting your rep or using that Claimyr service that was mentioned? I'm curious which approach worked for you as I might be in the same boat soon (my company just announced layoffs).

I tried the Claimyr service first and it actually worked! Got connected to an agent who found that there was an identity verification issue that was never properly flagged in the system. They fixed it on the spot and my claim was processed 3 days later. Such a relief! Sorry about your potential layoff - hope everything works out.
