Applied for ny unemployment in November, still nothing after calling governor's office
Filed my unemployment claim back in November after getting let go from my retail job. It's now almost April and I still haven't received a single payment. My rent is piling up and I'm about to get evicted. After weeks of trying to reach someone at unemployment with zero luck, I finally called the governor's office out of desperation last week. Someone from DOL actually called me back yesterday and asked me a bunch of questions about my claim. They told me my case would be "expedited" but didn't give me any timeline or details. Has anyone gone through this process before? Will this actually help get my money faster or is this just another runaround? At this point I don't know what else to do.

Same thing happened to me. Applied in August, nothing for months. Called the governor's hotline in December and they promised to 'expedite' my claim. Still took another 3 weeks but I finally got paid. Just keep checking your payment history online every day.

•Thanks, that gives me some hope at least. Did they backpay you for all the months you were waiting?

•Yeah they did backpay everything but took forever. Make sure you're still doing your weekly certifications even though you haven't been approved yet!

•3 weeks after calling governor? Ugh I'm on week 4 after my 'expedite' and still nothing 🤮

After 2 months of getting nowhere, I found this service called claimyr.com that actually got me through to a live agent. Instead of waiting on hold for hours, they called and waited, then connected me when an agent answered. Talking to a real person got my claim fixed in one call and my money started coming the next week. Literally saved me from getting evicted. Check out their process here: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE - absolutely the best investment I made during this whole unemployment nightmare!

•this sounds like spam...does this actually work? feels like another scam targeting desperate people 🤔

•Not a scam at all! I was skeptical too but I was at my wits end after trying to get through for literally months. They just connect you with a real DOL agent - you still have to solve your own issues but at least you're talking to someone who can help.

•yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄 the unemployment system is DESIGNED to be broken

•No catch - they just do the waiting on hold for you. I was seriously about to lose my apartment. After my call I got $5800 in backpay within a week. You have nothing to lose by trying it.

•I actually used this too! Got my benefits unlocked after 3 months of nothing. The phone tree hell at NY unemployment is insane - this was the only way I actually got to talk to someone.

Ive been there, friend. The "expedited" thing is real but takes about 2-3 weeks sometimes. Make sure your keeping up with your weekly certifications! They wont tell you this but if you miss weeks, you might not get backpay for those weeks.

The system is completely broken on purpose. They hope you'll give up. KEEP CALLING THEM EVERY DAY. Be the squeaky wheel. Also reach out to your local state rep - they have special channels to DOL that normal people don't have access to.

•THIS!! 💯 My assemblymember's office fixed my claim in a week after months of nothing from DOL. They have special contacts.

•That's a good idea, I hadn't thought about contacting my state rep. Will try that tomorrow.

For everyone struggling with NY unemployment, here's what I've learned after navigating this broken system twice in the last few years: 1) Calling the regular number is pretty much useless - you'll wait hours only to get disconnected or get someone who can't help. 2) The "expedite" process through the governor's office can work but usually takes 2-4 weeks to see results. Keep certifying every week while you wait. 3) Contact your local state assembly member or senator - they have dedicated liaisons at DOL who can move things along faster. 4) If you're desperate and need immediate help, I've had success using claimyr.com to get through to an actual human. They basically wait on hold for you then connect you when an agent picks up. It's worth every penny when you're about to lose your apartment or can't buy food. 5) DOCUMENT EVERYTHING. Take screenshots, note down who you talked to and when. If you send faxes, keep the confirmation receipts. 6) If all else fails, submit a complaint through the state AG's office. That sometimes lights a fire under them. The system is intentionally difficult to navigate, but don't give up. Your benefits are YOUR MONEY that you're entitled to by law.

•This is gold right here. Saving this comment. Been dealing with ny unemployment for 3 months now with zero progress.

•Have you personally used that claimyr site? I'm hesitant to try random services...

•Yes, I've used it twice. Both times they got me through to an agent in under 2 hours when I had been trying for weeks with no luck. The DOL phone system is designed to make you give up.

Lol "expedited" in NYSDOL language means maybe they'll look at it in the next month instead of 3 months. Keep certifying weekly and prepare to wait.

•Right? Their definition of expedited is everyone else's definition of glacial pace 🤣

I waited 4.5 months last year. Turns out someone had put my birthdate wrong in the system by one digit. Such a simple error caused months of hardship. Keep calling, its the only way.

After my claim got stuck for 3 months, I actually drove to Albany to the DOL office and refused to leave until someone helped me. Got resolved that day. Sometimes you gotta go nuclear.

•Wait you can actually go to a physical office?? I thought everything was phone only now

•Technically your not supposed to, but i was desperate. Security tried to make me leave but I played the single mom about to be homeless card HARD. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

Check if your claim is flagged for identity verification. That was my issue - waited forever only to find out they needed me to upload more documents to prove I was me. The system never notified me.

•How can I check if that's the issue with my claim?

•Login to your account and look for any messages or alerts. Sometimes they send letters in the mail too so check your mailbox carefully. But honestly calling is the only way to know for sure.

•They lost my ID docs TWICE and then penalized me for not providing them. Clowns running that department fr 🤡

Double check your payment method in your online account. My partner waited 3 months, turns out they were trying to direct deposit to an old closed bank account. The system never alerted her about the failed deposits.

there's a backdoor phone number that sometimes works better than the main line: [redacted]. I got through in 45 mins last week.

After you talked to someone from DOL, check your spam/junk email folders daily! I missed an important email from them asking for additional documents because it went to spam. Almost lost my whole claim because of that.
