NY unemployment claim stuck since September - called governor's office for help

Applied for NY unemployment back in September 2025 and my claim is just sitting there doing nothing. Been 4 months with zero payments! Called unemployment so many times but couldn't get through to anyone. Finally got so frustrated I called the governor's office and someone from DOL actually called me back. They asked me a bunch of questions about my claim and said it would be "expedited" now. Has anyone been through this expedite process after contacting the governor? How long does it actually take? Do I need to keep certifying every week while waiting? Really need this money ASAP!!!

Yes, you absolutely need to keep certifying every week! That's the most important thing. The expedite process usually takes 7-10 business days in my experience, but it can sometimes take up to 2-3 weeks depending on what's causing the delay with your claim. The DOL rep should have told you what the specific issue was - did they mention anything about why your claim has been stuck?

They just said something about "pending review" and that my case needed manual verification? Didn't really explain WHY it was stuck for so long. And yes I've been certifying every single week since September, just feels like shouting into the void at this point.

That's what I'm afraid of... did you ever get your claim resolved? Or are you still waiting?

I was in a similar situation last month. My claim from July was stuck pending for months with no explanation. After the governor's office "expedite" didn't work, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an actual NYSDOL agent in about 10 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE The agent was able to tell me exactly what was wrong (missing employer verification) and fixed it while I was on the phone. Got all my backpay two days later. Might be worth trying if the expedite doesn't work in the next week or so.

Never heard of this service before. Did you have to provide a lot of personal info? I'm a little hesitant to try something I haven't heard of...

I was hesitant too but it just connects you to the actual NYSDOL phone line - you're talking directly with the real unemployment office. They just help you skip the busy signals and waiting. You still need your NY.gov ID and all your regular claim info when talking to the agent.

The "expedited" thing is real but super inconsistent. My friend got his claim fixed in 3 days after governor intervention, but mine took almost a month even with the "expedite" flag. Really depends on what's wrong with your claim and who ends up working on it. Some agents are way more helpful than others.

Manual verification usually means they need to check something with your employment history or identity documents. Did you have any gaps in employment? Or work for multiple employers? Or have any identity verification issues when you first applied? These things usually trigger manual review flags, and unfortunately those can sit in the queue for MONTHS if you don't actively follow up. When you finally get through to someone, make sure to: 1. Get their name and ID number 2. Ask for a specific timeframe for resolution 3. Request they send you an email confirmation about your case 4. Ask if there's any additional documentation you can submit to speed things up And yes, keep certifying every week! You'll get retroactive payments for all weeks you properly certified once your claim is approved.

Yes! I did have multiple employers in the last 18 months - worked part-time at two different places while finishing school. Maybe that's what triggered it? The DOL person didn't mention needing any additional documents though. I'll make sure to ask all those questions if they call me back. Thanks for the advice!

my claim was stuck for 5 months last year!!!!! completey ridiculos. the system is BROKEN. they make it impossible to reach anyone and then blame YOU for not providing info they never asked for!!! i ended up having to contact my state assembly person who finally got it fixed after the governor office did NOTHING. just another option if the expedite fails.

I actually agree with this approach. State assembly members and state senators can sometimes get results faster than going through the governor's office. Each office has staff dedicated to constituent services who know exactly who to contact at NYSDOL.

Just went through this whole saga myself. Applied in August, nothing happened until November. The "expedited" process after governor intervention took exactly 12 days for me. Got a call from a senior DOL agent who fixed everything while on the phone with me. Then received all backpay (about $6,300) three days later. The key thing they told me was that my claim got flagged because I had worked remotely for a company in another state for part of my base period. Once they manually reviewed that, everything went through. Multiple employers definitely can trigger manual review flags. Hang in there! The system is frustrating but eventually works if you keep pushing.

That's really helpful to know! I'll wait the 12 days and see what happens. Did you get any kind of notification that your claim was moving forward, or did they just call you unexpectedly?

No notification whatsoever. Just a random call from a 518 area code (Albany) on a Tuesday afternoon. Make sure you're answering all calls, even unknown numbers, for the next couple weeks!

Update: It's been 8 days since I talked to the DOL person from the governor's office, and just checked my payment history and NOTHING has changed. Still says pending for every week since September. So frustrating!!!

Give it a few more days before panicking. If you don't see any movement by day 14, I'd try that Claimyr service I mentioned. At least you'll get to talk to someone directly about your claim status.

i had a completely different issue with my unemployment but also got stuck in review limbo. my sister told me to contact the ombudsmans office instead of the governors office. apparently they have more direct connections to the review team? worth a try if your expedite doesn't work. good luck!

does anyone know if theres an email address that actually works for nysdol? hate calling and never getting thru

There's no direct email for claims issues. The only official contact methods are through your NY.gov account messaging center, calling the claims center, or using the virtual assistant on the DOL website (which is basically useless for complex problems).

One important thing to check - log into your NY.gov account and make sure there aren't any waiting action items or document requests. Sometimes they'll request additional verification documents through the portal but don't notify you by email or phone. Worth checking every couple of days.

Just checked and there's nothing in my account - no messages, no document requests, nothing! Just shows all my weekly certifications as "pending" with no explanation. It's like my claim fell into a black hole.

FINAL UPDATE: It finally worked! Got a call today (day 12) from a DOL supervisor who fixed my claim while I was on the phone. She said there was an issue with one of my employers not responding to their verification request, but she manually overrode it after reviewing my paystubs. All payments should be released in 24-48 hours! So for anyone else dealing with this - the governor's office expedite process does work, just takes almost exactly 12 days like someone mentioned above. Thanks everyone for the advice and support!

Great news! Glad it worked out. Make sure you keep certifying until you actually see the money hit your account or payment card.
