Was a bit nervous or untrusting at first, but my calls went thru. Amended my NY unemployment taxes - will this mess up my child tax credit payments?

Just had to amend my 2022 tax return because the unemployment amount was wrong. I got a letter showing they calculated my benefits at $14,230 but my tax return only showed $11,840. So I filed an amendment last month to fix it and get the extra tax refund. But now I'm worried this might mess up my monthly child tax credit payments I've been getting for my two kids. They've been coming regularly on the 15th, but with this amendment processing, I'm not sure if they'll suddenly stop or get delayed. Has anyone dealt with this before? Can amending your return for unemployment benefits affect child tax credit payments?

I filed an amended return for the EXACT same reason in April. My ctc payments kept coming fine BUT my amendment is still "processing" according to the where's my amended return tool. It's been like 18 weeks now 🙄

One thing to keep in mind - the IRS and unemployment systems don't talk to each other very well. I amended my unemployment income and kept getting the CTC as normal, but when I filed the next year's taxes, it was a mess sorting it all out. Document everything!

NY unemployment ID.me verification hack - using two devices fixed it for me!

Been struggling with the ID.me verification for my ny unemployment for weeks and finally figured something out. If ur stuck in that nightmare, try using 2 different devices! I used my desktop to go through the main process and then my phone for taking pictures of my drivers license and doing the facial recognition part. Made a HUGE difference. The system kept timing out when I tried to do everything on just my laptop. Some tips that helped me finally get through: put your license or passport on a dark background (I used a navy blue towel) when taking pics. For the facial recognition, make sure you're in a really bright room and turn your phone brightness all the way up. I was getting rejected for like 3 weeks until I figured this out. Hope this helps someone else!

Protip for anyone struggling with the facial recognition part: remove glasses, hats, etc and make sure the lighting is hitting your face evenly from the front, not from above or the side.

NY unemployment owes me 5 weeks of backpay - I'm desperate for tips on collecting

I lost my job in September when our company downsized. Applied for ny unemployment right away and started receiving benefits in October. Everything was going fine until mid-November when the payments suddenly stopped coming for no reason. I kept certifying every week like clockwork but no money appeared in my account. This went on for 5 weeks - the worst possible timing since my landlord raised my rent by almost 40% starting that same month! I called the unemployment office over 30 times but either couldn't get through or got disconnected. When I finally reached someone in January, they said there was a "system flag" on my account that needed review, but they couldn't tell me why. They said they'd escalate it and I should see my backpay soon. It's now been 6 weeks since that call and I STILL haven't received the money they owe me for those 5 missed weeks. I had to borrow from family just to survive and my credit cards are maxed out. Has anyone successfully gotten backpay from unemployment after such a long time? Any tips or tricks to actually get them to release the money they owe me?

I went through this EXACT thing back in November. What worked for me was using Claimyr to get through to an agent (claimyr.com) and then specifically requesting to speak with a supervisor. It worked for me! After weeks of failed attempts calling myself, I was desperate enough to try anything. The thing about unemployment is actually getting through to talk to someone is 90% of the battle. Once you have a live person (especially a supervisor), most issues can get resolved in one call.

Suspicious auto-approval for ny unemployment claim - is this legit?

My cousin got a text message saying her unemployment claim was auto-approved without her even reapplying. She's confused because she worked some months after the August 2021 reopenings but hasn't worked at all since April 2022. The text says she doesn't need to do anything else and benefits will start processing. She's super suspicious because she never filed a new claim. Has anyone else gotten automatically re-enrolled without filling out any paperwork? This seems weird to me. Could it be some kind of scam or identity theft thing?

Should NY unemployment extend benefits with rising covid cases?

I'm really concerned about the new spike in covid cases happening all across New York. My benefits are scheduled to end next month, and I'm still not comfortable returning to my restaurant job with everything that's going on. The dining room is always packed and ventilation is terrible. My manager keeps calling asking when I'm coming back, but I've got an elderly parent at home who's immunocompromised. The governor keeps acting like everything's back to normal when clearly it isn't. Are they planning to extend unemployment for people in high-risk situations? Anyone heard anything about possible extensions? The thought of going back to work with so many unmasked customers makes me seriously anxious.

Sounds like you need to talk to a real person at unemployment ASAP before your benefits end. Good luck with that tho - their phone system is a joke. After dozens of failed calls I used claimyr.com and finally got through. The rep told me all about my options including how to properly document medical exemptions.
