Can I file a new NY unemployment claim after benefits ran out? Still working part-time
My unemployment benefits expired on November 12th 2022. I'm currently working part-time but not making more than $440 per week. Started this part-time job back in May 2022. Is it possible for me to file a new claim? Or am I just out of luck now that my benefits have run out? Still struggling to find full-time work and bills are piling up fast.

You should be able to file a new claim, but you'll need to have worked and earned enough money during your base period (which is the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters before you file). If you've only worked part-time since May 2022, you might not have enough earnings to qualify for a new claim. Still worth trying though, just call or go on the website.

•Thanks for the info. So if I've only been making about $325-440 a week since May, that probably isnt enough right? Thats what I was afraid of.

•You need to earn at least $2,700 in one quarter and total base period wages of 1.5x your high quarter. So do the math and see if you qualify! 👍

After struggling with the same problem for weeks, I finally found a solution that worked! Used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and they helped me get through to a real person at unemployment. Explaining my situation to an actual agent made all the difference - they were able to tell me exactly what I qualified for and how to proceed. Check out this video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE - talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast after weeks of frustration!

•yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

•No catch honestly. It just connects you with an actual agent instead of waiting on hold forever. My claim got sorted in one call after weeks of trying. Best decision I made!

•wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS?

•It worked for me! The difference is you actually get to talk to a human who can help with your specific situation. They just handle the waiting on hold part.

•I used it last month actually. Worth every penny to not spend 4 hours listening to that awful hold music 🎵

It depends on if you've worked enough during your base period to qualify for a new benefit year. Each state has different requirements. For NY, you need to have worked in at least two calendar quarters, earned at least $2,600 in one quarter, and have total wages at least 1.5x your highest quarter. Call them and ask - that's the only way to know for sure.

I was in your exact situation last year. Had to call NY unemployment like 50 times before getting through, but they told me I couldn't file a new claim until I had enough work history. Ended up taking a second part-time job for a few months until I qualified. The system is such trash 🗑

•Ugh that sucks. Did they tell you how many months of work history you needed?

•They said I needed enough earnings in my base period. For me that meant working more hours at both jobs for about 4 months. Really depends on how much you're making tho.

•The whole system seems designed to make us give up. I swear they hope we just stop trying so they don't have to pay.

Here's what you need to know about qualifying for a new NY unemployment claim after exhausting benefits: First, you need to have enough wages in your base period to qualify for a new claim. Working part-time since May 2022 might not be enough depending on how much you earned. Second, if you're currently working part-time, you can still potentially qualify for partial benefits if you earn less than the maximum benefit rate ($504 in NY). Third, there's a specific process for filing a new claim after benefits expire. You'll need to: - Wait until your benefit year ends - File a new claim online or by phone - Report all work and earnings accurately - Be prepared to verify your employment history Most importantly, you need to ACTUALLY SPEAK to an agent to get clear answers about your specific situation. After trying for weeks, I finally got through using claimyr.com - it was a game changer. They got me connected to a real person who explained exactly what I qualified for. Don't waste days trying to get through on the phone like I did initially. Get your questions answered by an actual representative who can review your specific case and tell you what options you have. Good luck!

•Thank you for the detailed explanation! This is super helpful. Did you have to provide any new documentation when filing your second claim?

•Yes, I needed to provide pay stubs from my part-time work to verify my earnings during the base period. Having everything ready before calling saved a lot of time.

The NY unemployment system is BRUTAL rn. I spent 3 weeks trying to get an answer about my claim. Ended up using claimyr.com to get through and finally got it sorted. Seems like you might qualify for partial benefits if you're making under the threshold, but you need enough work history in your base period.

From personal experience, you need enough wages in your base period to qualify. Part-time since May probably isnt enough, but call and double check. Don't take advice from reddit, talk to an actual agent.

You need to call them and ask. There's no way around it. I know it's frustrating but every case is different and only they can tell you if you qualify. So tired of the inefficiency...

•But good luck getting through to them by calling! I tried for 2 straight days and couldn't get past the automated system 😡

•Try calling right when they open. That worked for me after 3 days of trying.

I remember being in your shoes. If you earned anything at all in the last year, it'll reset your benefit amount and it might be significantly lower. Make sure to check if it's worth filing a new claim vs continuing to look for full-time work.

•That's a good point. Don't want to reset my benefit amount if it's gonna be way lower.

NY unemployment is THE WORST when trying to figure this out. I'm in a similar situation and still havent been able to reach anyone who can give me a straight answer. Let me know if you figure it out! 💀

Just fyi the $504 max weekly benefit amount was increased to $529 this year. So if your working part time and making less than that after taxes your probably eligible for something. But like others said, you have to have enough work history in your base period.

•Actually its $540 now, they raised it again in October!
