Can I apply for unemployment again after my previous Washington ESD claim ended?
My unemployment benefits ran out in September and I've been working part-time since then but it's not enough to cover my bills. The job market is still pretty rough and I'm wondering if I can apply for unemployment again? I had a regular UI claim that lasted about 20 weeks. Do I need to wait a certain amount of time or can I file a new claim right away? Also not sure if my part-time work affects anything. Any advice would be appreciated!

Yes, you can definitely apply for a new unemployment claim! Since your benefit year ended, you'll need to file a new initial claim rather than reopening your old one. The part-time work might actually help you qualify since Washington ESD looks at your earnings from the past 18 months.

•That's a relief! Do I file online through the same SecureAccess Washington portal or is there a different process for new claims?

•Same portal at secure.esd.wa.gov - just select 'Apply for Benefits' instead of reopening an existing claim.

Just went through this exact situation last month. You'll want to make sure you have all your employment info ready including the part-time job. They'll calculate your weekly benefit amount based on your earnings from the past year including that part-time work.

•Good to know! Did your benefit amount change much from your previous claim?

•Actually went up a little because I had worked more hours before filing the second time around.

I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for weeks to ask about reapplying and their phone lines are impossible. Has anyone found a way to actually talk to someone there?

•I had the same problem until I found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com. They basically get you through to an actual Washington ESD agent without the endless hold times. There's even a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of that but willing to try anything at this point. The regular phone number just hangs up on me after an hour of waiting.

•Can confirm Claimyr works - used it to get help with my adjudication issue. Way better than trying to call Washington ESD directly.

wait so if my claim ended in august can i still apply again now or is there like a time limit???

Lincoln Ramiro
•No time limit! You can apply for a new claim anytime after your benefit year ends. Just make sure you're still unemployed or underemployed when you apply.

One thing to watch out for - if you're working part-time you'll need to report those hours every week when you file your weekly claim. Washington ESD will reduce your benefit amount based on how much you earn but you can still get partial benefits.

Henrietta Beasley
•How does that work exactly? Like if I make $200 in a week do they just subtract that from my benefit amount?

Ava Hernandez
•It's a bit more complicated - they have a formula where you can earn up to a certain amount without losing benefits, then they start reducing dollar for dollar after that. The exact amount depends on your weekly benefit amount.

•I think you can earn up to about $100 without any reduction but don't quote me on that number. Best to check with Washington ESD directly.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS A MESS! I've been trying to figure this out for months and nobody at Washington ESD gives consistent answers. One person tells me one thing, another tells me something completely different.

Henrietta Beasley
•That's so frustrating! Have you tried getting help from someone who knows the system better?

•This is exactly why services like Claimyr are helpful - they know how to navigate Washington ESD and can get you to the right person who actually knows the current rules.

Make sure your job separation from the part-time work qualifies you for benefits. If you quit without good cause or got fired for misconduct, that could disqualify you from the new claim.

•I'm still working the part-time job, just need more hours/income. Does that matter?

•Oh that's different then - you'd be filing as underemployed which is totally fine. Washington ESD allows partial benefits for people working reduced hours.

Been there! Filed my second claim in October after my first one ended in July. The process was pretty straightforward online. Just had to answer questions about my work history again and wait for them to process it.

•How long did it take to get approved? My first claim took forever because of adjudication.

•About 2-3 weeks this time, much faster than my first claim. I think because I'd already been through the system before.

dont forget about the job search requirements!! they're still making people do 3 job searches per week even for partial benefits

Henrietta Beasley
•Ugh I forgot about that. Do I still need to do job searches if I'm already working part-time?
0 coins
Mason Davis
•yep still gotta do them unless you get an exemption somehow

Lincoln Ramiro
•Correct - the job search requirement applies to all claimants unless you have a specific exemption like being on standby with your employer.

I'm in a similar situation but my previous claim was a disaster - took months to get resolved because of adjudication issues. Really hoping a new claim goes smoother this time around.

•What kind of adjudication issues did you have? I'm worried about running into problems again.

Mia Rodriguez
•They questioned my job separation and it took forever to get documents from my old employer. Eventually got resolved but was a nightmare.

•If you run into adjudication delays again, definitely consider using Claimyr to get through to someone who can actually help move things along.

Quick question - do they use the same base period for calculating benefits or do they look at more recent earnings for the new claim?
0 coins
Lincoln Ramiro
•They'll use a new base period that includes more recent earnings, which could increase your weekly benefit amount if you've been working.

•That's what I was hoping to hear! My earnings went up quite a bit between claims.

same boat here, benefits ended in june and been doing gig work since then but its not consistent enough. definitely filing a new claim this week

Henrietta Beasley
•How do you report gig work income? Is that different from regular part-time employment?
0 coins
Amelia Martinez
•i think you just report the gross earnings for the week when you file your weekly claim but not 100% sure

One heads up - make sure you file your weekly claims on time once your new claim gets approved. I missed a week early on and it caused all sorts of problems with my payments.

Henrietta Beasley
•Good reminder! I remember that being important with my first claim too.

•Yeah Washington ESD is pretty strict about the deadlines. You can restart claims that get closed for missed filing but it's a hassle.

Washington ESD's website has gotten a bit better since the pandemic but it's still confusing to navigate sometimes. The initial application isn't too bad though once you get started.

Henrietta Beasley
•That's reassuring! I remember the website being pretty glitchy during my first claim.

•Much more stable now, though I still recommend doing the application during off-peak hours just in case.

Been working reduced hours at my restaurant job since my claim ended - definitely qualifying for a new claim. The income requirements aren't that high if you've been working even part-time.

Henrietta Beasley
•Good to know! I wasn't sure if part-time work would be enough to qualify for benefits again.

•As long as you've earned enough in your base period you should be fine. The calculator on Washington ESD's website can give you an estimate.

whatever you do dont wait too long to apply if you need the benefits. I waited like 3 months after my claim ended and missed out on a lot of potential payments

Henrietta Beasley
•Can you backdate a new claim or do benefits only start from when you apply?
0 coins
Chloe Green
•they usually only go back to your application date so yeah apply asap if you need it

Just filed my new claim last week after my previous one ended in August. The online application took about 30 minutes and was pretty straightforward. Now just waiting for approval.

•That gives me confidence to get started! Did you need any special documents or just your basic employment info?

•Just had my Social Security number, employer info, and dates/reasons for job separations. Same stuff as the first time basically.

•And remember if you need to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD about your claim, Claimyr can save you hours of waiting on hold.
