Can you file for unemployment another time after previous claim ended?
My unemployment benefits ran out back in November and I've been working part-time since then. The job I had lined up for January just fell through and I'm wondering if I can file for unemployment another time? I'm not sure how this works - do I need to wait a certain period or can I just apply again right away? Has anyone been through this situation before?

Yes, you can definitely file a new claim! Since you worked after your last claim ended, you should be eligible to start a fresh benefit year. You'll need to meet the base period earnings requirements again, but it sounds like you had some work history since November.

•That's a relief! I was worried I'd used up my chance somehow. Do I just go through the same process on the Washington ESD website?

•Exactly - same process through secure.esd.wa.gov. Just make sure you have your employment info from the part-time job ready.

I've done this twice now. The key thing is making sure you have enough earnings in your new base period. If you only worked part-time for a couple months, you might not qualify for much.

•How do I know if I earned enough? I was making about $800 a week part-time from November through December.

•That should be plenty! Washington ESD looks at your highest quarter earnings, so even those two months might give you a decent weekly benefit amount.

Just went through this exact situation last month. Filed a new claim after my previous benefits ended in October. The process was straightforward, but I had trouble getting through to anyone at Washington ESD to verify my claim status. Kept getting busy signals and disconnected calls.

•Oh no, that's exactly what I'm worried about. How did you finally get through to them?

•Actually discovered this service called Claimyr that calls Washington ESD for you and gets you connected to an agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of trying to call myself.

•Interesting, I'll look into that if I run into phone issues. Thanks for the tip!

Wait, I'm confused. I thought you could only get unemployment once per year or something? This is all new to me.

•No, that's not how it works. You can file multiple claims as long as you have qualifying earnings in your base period. Each benefit year is separate.

•Good to know! I might need this info myself soon.

The timing thing is important too. Make sure you file as soon as you become unemployed - benefits don't backdate very far in Washington. I made that mistake once and lost like two weeks of benefits.

•How quickly should I file? The job officially ends this Friday.

•File immediately when you're unemployed, don't wait. You can file on the weekend or even the day your job ends.

•Should I gather pay stubs from the part-time job before I file?

One thing to keep in mind - your weekly benefit amount might be different this time since it's based on your new base period earnings. If you were making good money at the part-time job, you might actually get more than your previous claim.

•That would be nice! My last claim was only $245 a week because I had been working at a lower-paying job before that.

Zoe Kyriakidou
•With $800/week earnings, you should see a significant increase in your weekly benefit amount.

Just want to mention that if you end up having any issues with your claim getting stuck in adjudication or anything, that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier is legit. Used it myself when my claim was pending for weeks and they got me through to an agent same day.

•Good to know it actually works! I'm hoping my claim goes smoothly but it's nice to have a backup plan.

•Yeah, definitely worth knowing about. Way better than spending hours trying to get through on your own.

Also remember you'll need to do the job search requirements again. Three job search activities per week, keep good records in case they audit you.

•Right, I forgot about that part. Is it still the same requirements as before?

Jamal Brown
•Yep, still three per week. You can use WorkSourceWA activities, online applications, networking events, etc.

I've filed like 4 different claims over the years due to various job situations. Each time gets easier once you know the process. The main thing is just having your employment history organized.

•That's reassuring to hear. I was stressed this would be complicated somehow.

•Nah, Washington ESD makes it pretty straightforward. Just answer the questions honestly and keep good records.

Update on the Claimyr thing - they also helped me understand why my claim was taking so long. Turns out there was a simple verification issue I could have resolved weeks earlier if I'd known about it. Sometimes you really do need to talk to an actual person at Washington ESD.

•Yeah, just keep it in mind if you run into any roadblocks. Most claims go through fine, but when they don't, getting help makes all the difference.

Quick question - do you have to wait for your final paycheck before filing? My last day is Friday but I won't get paid until the following week.

Zoe Kyriakidou
•No, you can file as soon as you're unemployed. Just make sure to report that final paycheck when you do your first weekly claim.

•Perfect, thanks for clarifying that!

One more tip - take screenshots of everything when you file online. If there are any issues later, having that documentation can be really helpful.

Also make sure your contact info is current in your SecureAccess Washington account before you file. They'll send important notifications there.

Final thought - if anyone runs into delays or issues, seriously consider that Claimyr service. I probably would have waited weeks longer without it, and time is money when you're unemployed.

•I'll definitely keep that in mind. Hopefully I won't need it, but it's good to know the option exists.

•I might look into that too. The phone system at Washington ESD can be brutal.

Just remember to be patient with the process. Even when everything goes right, it can take a week or two to get your first payment. Budget accordingly!

Just want to add one final piece of advice - when you do file, make sure you understand the difference between filing a new claim versus reopening an old one. Since you had work after your benefits ended, you definitely want to file a NEW claim to get the higher benefit amount based on your recent earnings.

AstroAce
•That's a really important distinction I wouldn't have thought of. Thanks for pointing that out!

•No problem! It's one of those things that can make a big difference in your benefit amount.

I just wanted to chime in as someone who's been through this process recently. You absolutely can file for a new unemployment claim after your previous benefits ended, especially since you've been working since then. The key thing that helped me was having all my documentation ready before I started the online application - pay stubs, employer contact information, and exact dates of employment. Washington ESD's system will walk you through everything step by step. Since you were making $800/week part-time, you should qualify for a much better weekly benefit amount than your previous claim. Don't stress too much about it - the process is pretty straightforward once you get started!

•This is really reassuring to hear from someone who just went through it! I've been gathering all my employment documents today and feel much more prepared now. It's encouraging to know the online system guides you through everything - I was worried I might miss something important. Thanks for sharing your experience!

I was in almost the exact same situation last year! Filed a new claim in March after my previous benefits ended in September and I had worked temp jobs through the winter. The process was actually smoother the second time around since I knew what to expect. One thing I'd recommend is to file your claim early in the week (like Monday or Tuesday) - I noticed they seem to process new claims faster at the beginning of the week. Also, since you mentioned your part-time job paid well, you'll probably be pleasantly surprised by your new weekly benefit amount. The system calculates it based on your highest earning quarter in the base period, so those higher wages should really help. Good luck with everything!

•That's really helpful to know about timing the application for early in the week! I hadn't thought about that but it makes sense that they might process things faster at the start of their work week. I'm planning to file this weekend but maybe I should wait until Monday instead. It's also great to hear that the second time around was smoother - I was worried it might be more complicated somehow. Thanks for the tip about the weekly benefit calculation too, I'm cautiously optimistic that it'll be better than my last claim!
