Can I re apply for unemployment benefits after my claim expired last year?
My unemployment benefits ran out in September and I've been working part-time since then but it's not enough to cover my bills. The job market is still really tough and I'm barely getting 20 hours a week. Can I re apply for unemployment benefits with NYS Department of Labor or do I need to wait a certain amount of time? I'm not sure if there's a waiting period or if I need to meet different requirements since I already collected benefits before. Has anyone been through this process of reapplying?

Yes, you can definitely reapply for unemployment benefits in New York! There's no waiting period between claims as long as you meet the eligibility requirements. You'll need to file a new claim online through my.ny.gov and they'll look at your work history from the past 18 months to determine your weekly benefit amount. Make sure you have all your employment information ready when you apply. NYS Department of Labor will need employer names, addresses, dates of employment, and gross wages for all jobs in your base period. If you're still working part-time, you can collect partial benefits as long as you report your earnings on your weekly claim certification.

I was in almost the exact same situation last year! Filed a new claim after my benefits expired and it went through without any issues. The whole process took about 2 weeks from filing to getting my first payment. Just make sure you keep doing your job search requirements once you start claiming again.

I went through this same process a few months ago after my benefits expired. The key thing is that you need to have earned enough wages in your new base period to qualify - they'll look at your earnings from about 15 months ago up to 3 months ago. Since you've been working part-time since September, you should have enough recent work history. Just be prepared that your weekly benefit amount might be different from your previous claim depending on how much you earned during that base period. The online application really is pretty quick once you have all your info ready.
