Yes, you can definitely reapply for unemployment benefits with NYS Department of Labor if your circumstances changed. Since your hours were reduced significantly, you might qualify for partial unemployment benefits. You don't have to wait - you can file a new claim right away. Just make sure to report your part-time earnings on your weekly claims.

I was in the same boat last year! When you reapply they'll look at your recent work history to determine your benefit amount. Since you worked part time after your last claim ended, that might actually help establish a new base period. Just be honest about your current employment status when you file.

•did they ask you a bunch of questions about why you left your previous job or just focus on the current situation?

The key thing is that you'll be filing what's called a 'new claim' rather than reopening your old one. NYS Department of Labor will review your earnings from the last 18 months to calculate your weekly benefit amount. With only 10 hours per week, you should qualify for partial benefits as long as your weekly earnings are below the maximum threshold.

ugh the ny.gov website is seriously the worst. i spent like 2 hours trying to figure out how to reapply and kept getting error messages. if you cant get through online you might need to call but good luck with that - the phone lines are always busy

•Actually, if you're having trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor by phone, I found this service called Claimyr that helped me connect with an agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting hung up on.

same thing happened to my cousin except she waited like 3 months to reapply thinking she had to wait and missed out on benefits she could have gotten. definitely dont wait!

I work for a local nonprofit that helps people navigate unemployment benefits, and I can confirm what others have said - you can absolutely reapply right away! Since you're only getting 10 hours/week now, you'll likely qualify for partial benefits. One tip: when you file your new claim online, have your pay stubs from the past 18 months ready because they'll need to verify your work history. Also, don't forget to report your part-time wages each week when you certify - as long as you're earning less than your weekly benefit amount plus $50, you can still get some unemployment money. The system is designed to help people in exactly your situation!
